‘Us’ Sets Box Office Record For Original Horror Film

No sophomore slump here. Jordan Peele proved he’s no one-trick pony. His follow-up to his blockbuster directorial debut, Get Out, dominated during its opening frame.

Us, starring Lupita Nyong’o, opened with an impressive $70.3 million from 3,741 theaters. It’s the best opening for an original horror film in history and third best overall in the horror genre, behind only It ($123.4 million) and 2018’s Halloween ($76.2 million). It also marks the best launch for an R rated movie, passing 2012’s Ted, which opened to $54.4 million.

Us easily passed Get Out‘s opening of $33.4 million. That film, however, had serious legs and went on to gross $176 million domestically and $254.4 million globally. Will Us show longevity and pass its total? With Us, Peele has cemented his status as a massive force at the box office.

Last week’s champ Captain Marvel settled for second place with $35 million. It’s global take has passed the $900 million mark. It’s now the 10th highest grossing superhero film of all-time

Rounding out the Top 5 were Wonder Park with $9 million, Five Feet Apart with $8.5 million, and How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World with $6.5 million.
