Not lucky enough to score a ticket to watch The Boys In The Band last summer during its successful limited engagement? Well, Ryan Murphy is giving folks a second shot. He’s producing a film adaptation of the hit play for Netflix.
The 53-year-old producer made the announcement via social media. He’s leaving directing duties to Joe Mantello, who also directed the revival. The entire Broadway cast, who are all out and proud, including Matt Bomer, Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Andrew Rannells, Robin de Jesus, Brian Hutchison, Michael Benjamin Washington, Charlie Carver and Tuc Watkins will reprise their parts for the Netflix project.
The Boys in the Band centers on a group of gay men who gather in an NYC apartment for a friend’s birthday party. After the drinks are poured and the music is turned up, the evening slowly exposes the fault lines beneath their friendships and the self-inflicted heartache that threatens their solidarity.
Filming is set to begin mid-July with a 2020 air date in mind.
This marks the second Broadway adaptation involving Murphy. Just last week, he announced he was bringing the musical The Prom to the streaming service. He also has the upcoming series Ratched and The Politican in the works for Netflix.

Last summer, THE BOYS IN THE BAND were on Broadway, breaking house records at The Booth. THIS summer, The Boys In the Band will be filming a Netflix movie event. The incomparable Joe Mantello, who directed the Broadway revival, will direct the film adaptation. The Broadway cast of BOYS was so important to me, and as equally groundbreaking as Mart Crowley's seminal work. Everyone in the cast was out and proud…and feeling so blessed to mark the 50th anniversary of Mart's landmark play. The entire Broadway cast will reprise their roles in the film. I can't wait to be on set with Joe and Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Andrew Rannells, Matt Bomer, Charlie Carver, Robin de Jesus, Tuc Watkins, Michael Benjamin Washington and Brian Hutchison. I will be producing the film with David Stone and Ned Martel. Look for THE BOYS on Netflix in 2020.
