Steven Spielberg Finds His Leading Man For ‘West Side Story’ Musical

Larry Kent starred in the original 1957 Broadway production while Richard Beymer took the helm in the classic 1961 hit film. Now it’s Ansel Elgort’s turn to portray Tony. The 24-year-old actor has been tapped to star as one half of the star-crossed lovers in the West Side Story remake being helmed by Steven Spielberg.

Elgort, who broke out in a big way in The Fault in Our Stars, is absolutely perfect for the role. He’s shown his bad boy charming side in Baby Driver and dude can sing as well. Just check out his singles on YouTube.

With Ansel’s casting official, the project appears to be on track for a summer 2019 production date. I’m can’t wait to see who his fellow Jets will be and, more importantly, his leading lady.

Inspired by William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story tells the story of rival white and Puerto Rican gangs in 1950s New York. The original Broadway production featuring music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim ran for 732 performances and earned six Tony nominations including Best Musical in 1957.

What do you think of Elgort’s casting? Wise choice by Spielberg or a mistake? Weigh in below.
