Netflix is certainly trying to get their money’s worth from their $300 million dollar man. Ryan Murphy has already announced two upcoming series, Ratched and The Politician, for the streaming service. The 53-year-old producer just announced he’s bringing the hit Broadway musical, The Prom, to Netflix as well.
“THE PROM is one of the most uplifting, heartfelt and special musicals I have ever seen on Broadway. It’s truly an original that celebrates the underdog and says in a loving spectacular way that LGBTQ rights are human rights. I feel a special connection to it because it’s set in Indiana, and that’s where I grew up, too. I’m thrilled to announce I’m turning it into a MOVIE EVENT for Netflix, and I’m bringing producers @billdamaschke and @dori.berinstein and the amazing creative team with me — Tony Award winner Casey Nicholaw, Tony Award winner Bob Martin, Tony award nominee @sklarbar73 and Tony Award nominee @Chadbeg. See it first at the Longacre Theatre. It has a musical score that will leave you singing for days, a hilarious and moving book and some of the most showstopping direction, choreography and performances I’ve ever seen on Broadway. @theprommusical,” Murphy wrote on Instagram.
The Prom is a joyous comedy that follows an Indiana teenager who is banned from taking her girlfriend to the school dance, which leads a group of Broadway performers to band together to fight the injustice. It’s an original concept by Jack Viertel with a book by Bob Martin and Chad Beguelin, music by Matthew Sklar and lyrics by Beguelin.
Last Thanksgiving, The Prom made history. During a performance for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, actresses Caitlin Kinnunen and Isabelle McCalla performed a same-sex smooch during the number. It is believed to be the first lesbian kiss captured on the holiday’s nationally televised event.
Have you seen The Prom? I haven’t but would definitely check it out when it arrives on Netflix, tentatively scheduled for September 2020.
