Lady Gaga Responds To Bette Midler Over Wheelchair Mermaid Controversy

If you ask me, this whole thing is just ridiculous. Recently in Australia, Lady Gaga performed as a mermaid in a wheelchair and it created a lot of controversy for a few reasons. Firstly, some say that it was insensitive and advocates for disabled groups were apparently outraged. As a result, her and her entourage apparently got egged after the performance, but you know what, who brings eggs to a performance just in case? They were obviously going to egg her anyway. Secondly (egging aside), what got more attention, was Bette Midler publicly shaming Lady Gaga via Twitter for copying her “mermaid in a wheelchair” idea, as she had first done the act way back in 1980.

Midler sent three bitchy tweetsto @ladygaga, and now Lady Gaga has finally responded. In an interview with Billy Bush for “The Billy Bush Show” yesterday, Gaga said, “I had no idea that she did that and I’m a huge Bette Midler fan.”

Bush asked her if it was some kind of tribute to Midler, to which she responded, “Not in the beginning it wasn’t ’cause I didn’t know that she’d done [it], but I do now and I think it’s great. Obviously I feel connected to women in theater and women from the past…Maybe we’re just cut from the same cloth. I couldn’t hop around in that tail so I just stuck myself in a wheelchair.”

Gaga finished off the discussion by saying, “All I’ll say is that I… admire her and find her to be one of the most brilliant and incredible performers, so that’s all I’ll say. Maybe she was just joking too. She’s funny. Who knows?” Let’s hope Bette Midler was joking (which I don’t think she was). The whole thing is just petty. Even if she had copied the idea (which I don’t think she did), the idea of a mermaid in a wheelchair makes sense because how else would one get around on land? It’s not that amazing and unique of a concept, Midler.

Here are Bette Midler’s bitchy tweets about Lady Gaga as a mermaid in a wheelchair:

“I’m not sure @ladygaga knows that I’ve performed my mermaid in a wheelchair for millions of people — and many of them are still alive…..”

“Dear @ladygaga if you think a mermaid in a wheelchair seems familiar-it’s because it is!You can see it on youtube 24/7-with ME performing it”

“Dear @ladygaga Ive been doing singing mermaid in a wheelchair since 1980-You can keep the meat dress and the firecracker tits-mermaid’s mine”

Here’s Midler performing her act as a mermaid in a wheelchair:

Really? Maybe there are no “original ideas” left, but to suggest that Gaga didn’t plagiarize is naive. What’s next, Gaga in a Hot-Dog suit?
I say only 3 bitchy tweets was showing restraint on Bette’s part.
Long live Delores Delago, the toast of Chicago.

Why anyone would claim “mermaid in a wheelchair” after having 30 years to look back and think “wow singing as a mermaid in a wheel chair is stupid” is beyond me. Although watching that video, gaga and midler do have a lot in common.

This was squashed on the same day by Bette:

“Let’s drink this over at the Emmys in September,” Midler tweeted to Gaga. “Fabulous mermaids can coexist!”

  • Yeah sorry Gaga. I don’t believe a word of it and I’ll tell you. For someone who is SO in tune with pop culture and history and all that, Mermaid in Wheelchair is one of Bette’s most famous shticks.

    I dont know, I smell a copycat!

  • It just seems like she is ALWAYS copying someone and ALWAYS claims that she didn’t know. It’s to fishy…no pun intended
