Jack Nicholson did it. As have Heath Ledger and Jared Leto. Now it’s Joaquin Phoenix’s turn to do so. The 44-year-old actor will play the iconic supervillain in an upcoming origin Joker movie directed by Todd Phillips.
Joker is intended to be the first film in a series of DC-based films separate from the shared DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Phoenix’s character begins as a failed stand-up comedian who eventually morphs into a murdering psychopath.
“Under the direction of Todd Phillips, the film centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of a man disregarded by society is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.”
Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham also co-star.
When I first heard of this film, I admit I wasn’t all that excited for it. After watching the teaser, my stance has completely changed. This looks so good. Question is, will Phoenix’s portrayal match Heath Ledger’s Oscar-winning performance in The Dark Knight?
The Joker arrives October 4, 2019. Watch the teaser trailer below featuring Jimmy Durante’s iconic version of “Smile.” I’ll never hear that track the same way ever again.
