Charlie’s Angels first began as a television series in the 70s. The ABC show made Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Smith into household names. It only lasted five seasons, but its impact on pop culture would span decades.
ABC tried to revive the series a few years back but canceled it after one short season. Columbia Pictures hit jackpot with a big screen movie adaptation in 2000 with Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu as new ‘Angels.’ The sequel made about the same at the box office but earned mixed reviews. Sadly, a third installment never came to fruition.
In 2015, Sony announced Elizabeth Banks was set to direct and produce the film via her Universal-based Brownstone production company with her husband and producing partner Max Handelman. Casting finally appears to be picking up steam.
According to Variety, Kristen Stewart and Lupita Nyong’o are being eyed for the reboot. Personally, I love the idea of Stewart kicking butt on screen, not so crazy about Nyong’o though. Love her but I don’t think this project is a good fit for her.
While I’d love for Stewart to say yes, I don’t think she’s gonna sign on. She hasn’t headlined a major studio film since Snow White and the Hunstman in 2010. The 27-year-old actress has stayed mostly in the indie lane with her roles. Maybe, she’s ready to head back to tentpole flicks. Fingers crossed.
