Fitness Tip of the Week: Hard Core

In this week’s Fitness Tip, Mike shares a few exercises with you for your core and your abs. As he mentions, for a lot of people that have back pain, it’s often the result of a week core, so it’s important to keep it strong. Crunches only hit the surface/superficial layer of the abs. It’s still important to focus on the core as a whole.

GelaSkins and eBoy

The other day I was searching for reviews on new iPhone 4 cases. Thinking I was going to write something contrasting the various options available for your new iPhone.  I quickly realized that a lot hadn’t changed.  There were some new colors and textures but for the most part the materials and ideas were the same.  So, I headed over to where I purchased the skin for my 1st gen iPhone, www.gelaskins.com, to have a closer look at what they are up to for the phone 4.  I wasn’t disappointed.

Gelaskins have come a long way.  They have acquired many new designs, excellent collaborations, better fit, and the price is excellent too.  I will definitely be skinning my iPhone 4 with a gelaskin (I used bodyguardz for the 3G/3GS due to their excellent coverage but am ready for something a little more exciting for the 4).  I also love that they skin, with you selected design, the front, back and wallpaper of your phone. It looks great! Back to the point, one of the designers featured by Gelaskins is a Vancouver / German based design team called eBoy. I instantly fell in love with the cartoon cityscapes and started looking online for more eBoy.

Justice is served. Today, Shawn Woodward, a 37 year old carpenter, was found guilty of aggravated assault by Judge Jocelyn Palmer in the Ritch Dowrey gay bashing that took place at The Fountainhead Pub on March 13th, 2009. Woodward had punched Dowrey after approaching him saying that he was not a “faggot” (God I hate that word). He said it was self defense, claiming Dowrey touched his crotch.

As a result of this attack, Dowrey suffered permanent brain damage and can’t take care of himself. The bashing sparked the “ENOUGH!” rally in Vancouver on Davie Street, where hundreds, if not thousands, marched in Dowrey’s name and in protest to violence against gays. Here was the footage we took of the emotional day.

The crown still has to decide as to whether or not it was a hate crime and Woodward faces his sentencing on October 22nd.

In this week’s Fitness Tip, most importantly, Mike goes shirtless.

Aside from that, he also talks about two exercises for the chest, that you’ve probably never tried before. Mike always encourages you to do exercises that use more of your body – combination exercises, and these two are no exception.

These are two of his favorite exercises for the chest, the first one using a stability ball:

  • Combination Glute Bridge & Chest Press
  • Drop Pushup

In this week’s Fitness Tip, Mike Dirks talks to you about how to overcome training plateau. What is “training plateau”? Essentially, it’s when you stop seeing results. You keep doing the same things over and over again and your body is not really benefiting from the exercises the way it used to. Why is that? What are some ways that you can avoid that from happening, making your workout time as efficient and effective as possible? Well there are a few ways listed below, further explained in the video.

  • Increase your weight
  • Focus on the negative or eccentric phase of the exercise
  • Change your routine

Gay & Lesbian Events & Nightlife In Vancouver

Vancouver has a large gay population which boasts numerous venues and yearly events. Visitors from all over the world attend two annual parties, The Gay Pride Parade Day and Whistler’s Gay & Lesbian ski week.

Pride day this year will be Sunday August 1, 2010 starting at noon. The parade has an audience of over 600,000 and is lined up in colorful fashion throughout the 20 block progression ending at the “Sunset Beach Festival Site” for a continued celebration. The entertainment is non-stop and talented people wanting to participate can contact entertainment@vancouverpride.ca

Winter Pride at Whistler, BC usually held in February, was moved to March 1-8 to accommodate the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. The host hotel was the Hilton Whistler Resort & Spa but there are many other available hotels to choose from when visiting this spectacular tourist location . This popular Gay & Lesbian “week long” party celebrated it’s 18th year displaying the proud diversity of thousands of visitors and locals attending the numerous venues at the beautiful Whistler/Blackcomb location. Events included a “wild pool party“, fetish themes, snowball fights, dog sledding tours, yoga, zip lining and even cooking classes.

Yesterday, yours truly along with a few of the Homorazzi cast attended Opus Hotel’s 8th annual street party. This was my fourth time enjoying this yearly event and one of my favorite events of the summer. It’s the perfect kick-off to my Vancouver Pride weekend festivities. Once again the organizers pulled off an amazing event that drew over 300 invite-only VIPS to the trendy Yaletown location.

This year’s party had an Arabian Nights theme and featured the beautiful sights and sounds of Morocco. Guests were served delicious cocktails and canapes. As you’ll see in the pictures below, we definitely enjoyed the lime-flavored Miller Chill. A beer with only 100 calories. You can’t argue with that. In addition to our taste buds being treated to tasty treats, our eyes were wowed by the Middle-Eastern entertainment and belly dancers. Breakfast Television’s Riaz Meghji hosted this year’s festivities.

Sure the purpose was for everyone to have fun, but the hotel also made a conscious effort to raise money for The Opus Foundation. This year the foundation pledged their ongoing support of UNICEF’s Unite for Children, Unite against AIDS campaign. They presented UNICEF Canada with a $10,000 donation as part of their commitment of $50,000 over the next 5 years. Other monies were raised via a raffle. Lugaro Jewellers generously donated a stunning 14-karat white and yellow gold ring set with a 12.70-carat oval cut Blue Topaz stone as the feature raffle prize. The hotel encouraged all guests to open their wallets and donate to the charity at unicef.ca.

Fitness Tip of the Week: Band Workout

Another beautiful day today in Vancouver as we kick off pride weekend! I know a lot of you are still sleeping because you were out last night… Not to brag (but I’m going to anyways), but I got up at 5:45am as per usual to go to bootcamp – haha.

Today, we worked out outside and below Mike Dirks, our instructor/trainer has outline four exercises you can use outside (or anywhere) using an exercise band. These four exercises engage the full body, using all major muscle groups. They are as follows:

  • Squat Row To Toe x 10 reps
  • Squat Press x 10 reps
  • Chest Press x 10 reps (each side)
  • Squat Reverse Fly x 10 reps

* Repeat the sequence 3 times.
