So sitting at dinner in Palm Springs a few weeks ago with a group of guys we like to refer to as the “A-Gays” – defined as the smart, sophisticated, classy gays, haha. There was all of these amazing, intellectual conversations going on about Prop 8 and gay marriage and politics and all sorts of things that were way over my head – being a 23 year old gay from a small town without much of a strong view on any political topic. All of these discussions I found fascinating and for the first time left me thinking for the first time, “how can I help people see gays in a more positive light?” or “what can I do to contribute?”.
I mean, don’t get me wrong, we definitely have it better than any gay man 20 years ago and being gay is so much more accepted now days, even kind of trendy (See Glee, modern family, etc). That being said, we do have a long way to go to reach true equality, with Prop 8 just being turned down and people still being killed for being gay in some parts of the world (Won’t be rushing off to Saudi Arabia anytime soon!)
A great way to update any outfit is with a wide belt. I’m not talking 2″ to 3″ wide…. we’re going super wide 4″ to 6″. An over-sized dress or even a jacket/coat can easily be updated into a slimmer silhouette by cinching it with a wide belt. Wide belts make it easy to trim off a few extra inches in the waist and work great with knits & plaids for Fall/Winter. A simple wide belt also helps balance out a busy pattern on a dress, breaking it up and adding more shape. Wide belts now come in a variety of styles from stretchy, buckled, studded & jewel embellished. This trend has been around since 2007 and is here to stay. I love the way it punches up a dull & boring outfit and give it that extra something.
I consulted a blog called chickdowntown.com for some tips on how to wear a wide belt. See tips and photos on the next part of the post.
So what do you have in your wardrobe? Do you have the basics? Too many trendy pieces will leave you feeling like you have nothing to wear. Specially when pieces are too identifiable. The key is to be able to mix and match and limit your patterns and prints. Here are the Top 10 things you should already have in your wardrobe before even thinking about trendier pieces.

This article is totally random, let me just start with that.
The magic of this article starts months ago when I went to visit our Islander friend Kyle, over in Victoria. We spent one of the days wandering through the city popping into the little shops all throughout downtown. In one of the standard tourist stores I came across a brilliant wall filled with the most amazing t-shirt prints I’ve ever seen. I wanted to get one, but for some reason I decided not too (largely because I was told I would lose all my friends if I purchased one).
Every day since I left the island I have thought about those shirts and how I desperately want one. Kyle has refused to buy me one and bring it over for me, and instead is using it as leverage for me to come over for another visit.
