Game Of Thrones Most Pirated Show In 2015

In: Donovan, TV Shows

For the fourth straight year in a row, Game of Thrones has the dubious honor of being the most pirated show. The HBO fantasy show handily beat the competition with 14.4 million downloads. Landing in a distant second place was The Walking Dead with 6,900,000 estimated downloads.

According to TorrentFreak who compiles the annual list, there is no sign that TV-show piracy is declining. Definitely bad news for Hollywood. “The download numbers for the most popular shows continues to rise, sometimes exceeding the number of traditional viewers in the US.”

Once again, TorrentFreak’s annual Top 10 list of most pirated movies surprises me. Last year, high-brow films like The King’s Speech and 127 Hours made the cut, while other blockbusters failed to crack the list. This year is no different. Obvious choices like The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 and The Avengers made the list at No. 10 and No. 4 respectively, but the flick that was the most illegally downloaded of 2012 is a bit of a shocker.

Believe it or not, the high school comedy Project X topped the annual list. With an estimated 8,720,000 illegal downloads, it earns the distinction as the most pirated movie of the year. The film grossed roughly $100 million during its run at the box office. It’s interesting to compare that to The Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn Part 1‘s numbers. The vampire flick ranked at No. 10 with 6,740,000 downloads but grossed $712 million. Check out what else made the Top 10 list below.

I guess that’s an honor, right? Or does it just mean that either people love the “Fast and the Furious” movies but are embarrassed to go to the theater or simply too cheap to fork over cash. Whatever the reason, the latest installment of the Paul Walker and Vin Diesel franchise earned the title of most-pirated movie of 2011. The film already raked in over $626 million worldwide. Imagine how much more Walker and Diesel could’ve added to their respective bottom lines. Speaking of bottom lines, both of them have very juicy ones 😉

According to TorrentFreak, the racing flick was downloaded an estimated 9.3 million times. Though the number is astounding, “Fast Five” has nothing on last year’s “winner”. James Cameron’s sci-fi 3D opus, “Avatar“, was downloaded more than 16 million times and not only holds the crown for 2010 but for also the most illegally downloaded film of all-time. He truly is “king of the world”.

When comparing the top 10 list’s average over the past two years, one might think that illegal downloading is on the decrease. Not so, according to TorrentFreak. They claim that “alternate piracy sources” including streaming sites and cyberlockers have attributed to the decrease. Plus they say, the number of downloads spread beyond to more movie titles than just the ones in the Top 10. Check out what films “Fast Five” beat to earn this title.

Ahoy, Matey: 10 Most Pirated TV Shows

In: Donovan, TV Shows

Whether we like to admit it or not (for legal reasons), we’ve all downloaded our favorite TV shows through bittorrent. Sometimes we can’t help it because our PVR/DVR decided to go crazy and miss a show or someone in our household “accidently” deleted it after watching it themselves. Regardless of the reason, we’ve all done it. And according to the 2009 statistics compiled by, millions of us are guilty as charged. Let’s hope the network execs don’t make us walk the plank anytime soon. Let’s face it, it’s their own fault for not airing re-runs like they used to.

Not surprisingly, most of the shows in the top 10 are male-skewing since I can’t see Ashley, Brittany or Chloe downloading illegal content. Some of the shows that made the list are “Prison Break”, “24”, and “Lost” to name a few. See what other shows round out the list. I admit, a few of them were a bit of a shocker.

10. True Blood
I’m a little late to arrive on this bandwagon, but Brian and I recently got hooked. During the holidays, I purchased the Season One DVD at Target for an insanely low price of $17.99. The HBO vampire series made big waves during it’s second season, and that also translated to illegal methods as well. Coming in at No. 10, True BLood adds another 1.6 million “fangbangers” to it’s stable.
