the guilt trip

So many movies are coming out this month and so many movie trailers have debuted as of late – it’s that time of year! For the second week in a row, The Hobbit has dominated the box office. With an additional $36.7 million estimated from this weekend, the film has now reached a total of just under $150 million.

Tom Cruise’s new movie, Jack Reacher opened this weekend and came in second with an estimated $15.6 million. In the film, Cruise plays a homicide investigator who delves deeper into a case involving a trained military sniper who shot five random victims. Given the subject matter, it’s understandable as to why the film’s premiere in theatres was delayed by a week after the devastating school shooting in Connecticut.

Another newbie this weekend was the This Is 40 comedy, starring Paul Rudd, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Mann, and more. The R-Rated comedy serves as somewhat of a sequel to Judd Apatow’s Knocked Up movie.

Also opening within the past week were The Guilt Trip (check out Matt’s movie review here) and Monsters, Inc. 3D. See how these two films did and what other movies make up this weekend’s top 10 list below.

Movie Review: The Guilt Trip

In: Matt, Movies

The latest Seth Rogen comedy hits theaters this week, and I am pleased to say that I was totally surprised at how much I enjoyed this movie. The film pairs Rogen and Barbara Streisand in a oddball mother/son road trip that is full of the goofy scenarios that you would expect from such a pair.

Andrew Brewster (Rogen) is an organic chemist trying to sell his newly invented cleaning product to stores and companies across the country without much success. After visiting his mother, he decides to invite her along for the ride as he travels across the country so that he can surprise her at the end by introducing her to her long lost love. The movie’s plot line is predictable, the funny situations are expected but honestly, it doesn’t matter. This movie is such a lighthearted fun film that I had fun from start to end.

This movie looks so cute! Funny man, Seth Rogan teams up with funny lady Funny Girl, Barbra Streisand in a new comedy called The Guilt Trip. The trailer has just come out so be sure to check it out below!

The gist of the film is an inventor (Rogan) and his mom (Streisand) hit the road together so he can sell his latest invention. When he first asks her, she is thrown off by the invitation but soon becomes very excited about the mother-son adventure ahead. It sounds like some nice quality time together, but will he be able to get the job done traveling with his mother for 8 days in a car?

The movie was originally called called My Mother’s Curse, but the title was changed to The Guilt Trip shortly after which I think was a better choice. There are also some other familiar faces in the film, including Adam Scott, Casey Wilson, Colin Hanks, and more.
