Just when I thought X-Men Days of Future Past casting was complete, Bryan Singer throws a curve ball. The 47-year-old director announced via Twitter that Quicksilver, the speedy son of Magneto, will make an appearance in the highly-anticipated sequel.
“Before he was an #Avenger, he was just a REALLY fast kid. Thrilled to say #EvanPeters is joining #XMen #DaysOfFuturePast as #Quicksilver.” – Bryan Singer’s Twitter
The interesting part of this news is not who’s playing Quicksilver, but rather the addition of the character in the film. Just recently, Joss Whedon announced Quicksilver and his twin sister Scarlet Witch were part of his plans for The Avengers sequel.
To give a bit of a background, Magneto’s offspring are mutants. Since FOX owns the X-Men franchise, fans were worried that their inclusion to Disney-owned Avengers franchise might not happen due to legal issues. But since Whedon announced their inclusion, everything seemed fine.
I can’t help but think Singer adding Quicksilver this late in the game is a way to thwart The Avengers because they had no legal leg to stand on to prevent the characters’ appearance in Whedon’s film. Perhaps I’m reading too much into this, but my Spidey-sense tells me otherwise.
If you’re a fan of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, you’re in luck. After a few weeks of speculation, Joss Whedon has confirmed that the twin brother-sister combo will appear in The Avengers 2. Fans were worried that their inclusion might not happen due to legal issues. The characters are mutants and the offspring of Magneto. Since FOX owns the X-Men franchise, ergo the dilemma. In the end, all seems copacetic.
“You know, they had a rough beginning. They’re interesting to me because they sort of represent the part of the world that wouldn’t necessarily agree with The Avengers. So they’re not there to make things easier. I’m not putting any characters in the movie that will make things easier.” – Joss Whedon to IGN
For those who aren’t familiar with the siblings, here’s a quick rundown. Quicksilver aka Pietro Maximoff has the power of speed, while Scarlet Witch aka Wanda Maximoff can cast hexes which manipulate probability and alter reality. No actors are attached to the roles, but Saoirse Ronan has been rumored to be the prototype for Scarlet Witch. In other Avengers-related news, Whedon addressed the possibility of Robert Downey Jr. joining The Avengers sequel. Keep reading to find out.
If you follow me on Twitter (@TommyD) or Instagram (@Tommy_D83), you will have noticed that I posted a picture of the motherload that I got from MARVEL COMICS in their latest shipment. If you missed it I’m going to post it at the end of this entry.
One of the books I got this time was the Avengers vs X-Men COLLECTED EDITION! This book is massive, honestly I was incredibly surprised and totally grateful to have gotten this gift. If you don’t know about AvX, it was the epic story of the return of the Phoenix force and how the X-Men think it was to help rebuild their mutant population after the devastation the Scarlet Witch created my whispering ”No more mutants.” This sounds like something positive, however the Avengers know the Phoenix Force coming back to Earth will do nothing but wreak havoc on everything like it has in the past.
Once again, TorrentFreak’s annual Top 10 list of most pirated movies surprises me. Last year, high-brow films like The King’s Speech and 127 Hours made the cut, while other blockbusters failed to crack the list. This year is no different. Obvious choices like The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 and The Avengers made the list at No. 10 and No. 4 respectively, but the flick that was the most illegally downloaded of 2012 is a bit of a shocker.
Believe it or not, the high school comedy Project X topped the annual list. With an estimated 8,720,000 illegal downloads, it earns the distinction as the most pirated movie of the year. The film grossed roughly $100 million during its run at the box office. It’s interesting to compare that to The Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn Part 1‘s numbers. The vampire flick ranked at No. 10 with 6,740,000 downloads but grossed $712 million. Check out what else made the Top 10 list below.
This weekend, ‘Snow White and the Huntsman‘ opened in theaters and not surprisingly took the top spot at the box office. The highly anticipated film starring Charlize Theron and Kristen Stewart brought in an impressive estimated $56.2 million this weekend. I haven’t yet seen the film, but it’s definitely high up on my list of must-see movies.
Coming in second place this weekend was ‘Men In Black 3,’ holding up surprising well after debuting last weekend. The film brought in an estimated $29.3 million this weekend, bringing it’s total to $112.3 million. Aside from MIB 3, it’s ‘The Avengers‘ that continues to be the blockbuster of the year. The film brought in an additional $20.2 million this weekend, bringing it’s total to a ridiculous $552.7 million. Some people are getting filthy rich off this movie. LOL.
Did you see any movies in theaters this weekend that you have something to say about? Have you seen all three of these movies? If so, which one was your favorite? Check out the top 10 films below and share your thoughts in the comments.
This weekend, the highly anticipated board game turned feature film “Battleship” hit theatres in North America. After a rocking turn out and record breaking numbers overseas, many critics expected the Hasbro creation to overturn the reign of “The Avengers.” However, the powers of Taylor Kitsch and Rihanna were no match for the superheros and only came in second place with just over $25 million. That’s just over half over what they were projected to bring in. What else opened this weekend?
Sascha Baren Cohen’s new film “The Dictator” also debuted this weekend at the box office. Not unlike his previous runaway hits, Cohen continues to shock audiences while making them laugh with his unique blend of humor and political satire. The film came in third place this weekend grossing just over $24 million. A comedy that hit theatres on Friday was the book turned film, “What To Expect When You’re Expecting” which features a slew of stars – too many to name actually. Despite the huge names behind the project, the film failed to impress and came in fifth place behind “Dark Shadows.” Check out the weekend’s box office results below.
This weekend, it was unclear on Friday if Johnny Depp’s new film Dark Shadows was going to be able to “over shadow” the success of Marvel’s comic book hero flick The Avengers. “Shadows” had a strong midnight showing casting the theory that it was possible this remake of a British soap opera could have what it takes to hit number one over the weekend. However, a band of superheros can’t be denied the number one spot once again as they rose above all competition bringing in a staggering $103 million for a two week total of over $350 million. In a shocking statistic, The Avengers has accumulated almost the same amount of dollars in two weeks that the The Hunger Games did in 8 weeks. That’s quite the feat and a whole lotta money.
Dark Shadows didn’t disappoint at the box office however. It brought in a strong $28.8 million well above the third place film and former two week number one, Think Like A Man. It’s looking like next weekend will be the true box office battle when the action adventure film, Battleship takes on The Avengers at the box office. The Hasbro board game turned feature film has already grossed a ton of dollars overseas so it’ll be interesting to see if it can perform just as well over here in North America.
It’s no surprise that The Avengers, which opened in theaters this weekend, has broken records. With ample promotion, great reviews, and positive word of mouth, the superheros were able to accomplish some record breaking feats this weekend.
So far the film has brought in an estimated $80.5 million (which includes $18.7 million from midnight shows on Friday) and $69.7 million on Saturday. The estimates for today (Sunday) are $50.1 million which means the film will slay the $169.2 million opening-weekend record that ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2‘ previously held. This makes The Avengers the fastest film to hit $200 million domestically, and the $69.7 million Saturday gross is the highest of all time. Nicely done, Marvel!
Have you seen The Avengers yet? I still have to see it, but from what I’ve heard and of course Tommy‘s rave review, it’s a must see. Check out how the other films did this weekend in the Top 10 list below.
