Normally, the hour-long results show on any reality show bores me to death. Tonight, Dancing With The Stars pleasantly surprised me. Sure, Tom Bergeron could’ve revealed the results in ten minutes, but the filler this week was tolerable.
On deck to perform were Britain’s “other” boy band- The Wanted. Max George and his backup singers (LOL), sang “I Found You” and “Glad You Came” while looking dapper in their slim suits. Admittedly, I have a bit of a crush on Max, but lately that Jay McGuiness (the curly hair one) is looking pretty cute.
Earlier this season Paula Abdul joined the judges on the panel to critique the All-Stars. This time around, the 50-year-old entertainer choreographed a number featuring four of her No. 1 hits- “Straight Up“, “Forever Your Girl“, “Cold Hearted” and “Opposites Attract“. The performance incorporated previously filmed dancing footage with live segments. The results were fantastic and really allowed Abdul to shine at what she does best. She even brought out her animated duet partner MC Skat Kat from “Opposites Attract”.
The other two performances were by talented Kiwi dancer Parris Goebel and resident pro Derek Hough. The latter enlisted four female contemporary dancers for an emotional and powerful number. Co-choreographed by SYTYCD fan favorite Allison Holker, the performance also brought two other alums from the FOX show- Melanie Moore and Kathryn McCormick. I could watch Holker dance for hours. Allison not winning her season is one of the greatest travesties in reality competition history.
Check out all the aforementioned performances below. They truly are worth taking a sneak peek at. Without further ado, let’s get to the results.
Holy shit kids, I can hardly believe it – the NINTH season of So You Think You Can Dance is set to premier on Fox at 8/7c on Thursday, May 24th! I can’t believe this show has been on the air for eight years, and that my summer is once again going to be filled up with some crazy-as-heck Contemporary routines from Travis Wall! I wonder who else will be making a return to choreography list? Will there be a comeback of the legendary Mia Michaels? Will we get to fall in love all over again with lyric Hip Hop from Tabitha and Napolean (or Nappy Tabs if your SYTYCD alum)? Hot damn I hope so!
It feels like just yesterday that our girl, Melanie, took home the crown for season eight – a deserving winner! I was so happy to see the American public cast their votes for the dancer that truly earned the title, versus the production manipulation that Nigel Lythgo (Skeletor) forced on us each week. Do you remember that botched year when the writer’s went on strike and the producers decided to cram in two seasons back to back? What a disaster that turned out to be – both groups got screwed out of a complete US tour.
HOLY SHIT FOLKS! This is it!! In a few short hours America voted and Cat Deeley will have revealed this year’s favorite dancer from So You Think You Can Dance, season eight! I can hardly contain my excitement and nerves. By the time you’re reading this article, your more than likely in the know, but I’m going to recap the night for you one last time. If America has their heads on straight, we SHOULD be seeing Melanie, who rightfully deserves it, take home the title and the swathe of prizes that go along with the accolades.
The night opened with a performance from this year’s top twenty dancer, and it was definitely cool to see them all back on the stage again. I had actually forgotten about Ryan! This routine was incredible, and choreographed by the legendary Sonya Tayeh! Then Cat Deeley came out in a SMASHING outfit!
The judging panel was stacked again for the final performances, with seven people joining us to relive their favorite moments from the season. Lil’ C, Robin Antin, Tyce Diorio, Sonya Tayah, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Screaming Mary Murphy, and Skeletor (Nigel Lythgo). Man oh man, I can’t wait for a break from his unnecessary perviness.
I can’t believe it! Where did the time go? It’s already the finale of season eight of So You Think You Can Dance, and I am unbelievably excited to see the final four take to the stage one last time to lay it on the line. I will make a bold statement now, if Melanie doesn’t win this year’s competition, America will have got it devastatingly wrong.
Sure, Tadd has made leaps and strides in the competition as an untrained B-Boy/Hip Hop dancer, and we love an underdog story; however, we’ve already had that in past winner Russell. Melanie has time and time again proven her abilities, adapting to every style, destroying her solos, and left the audience in awe of her talents each week. I will give credit when credit is due, and say that Sasha and Marko have truly been phenomenal throughout this competition as well, and it’s amazing to see the original pairing of Melanie and Marko make it through to the end, together. That is what this competition is about – showcasing outstanding talent, and rising to the level of your accompanying partner. Sasha was burdened for weeks dancing with Alexander, and it was a relief to see her truly showcase her talents with other contestants and the returning all-stars.
Guaranteed we are in for an incredible night of dance, with outstanding performances and some interesting critiques from guest judge of the week, Katie Holmes. Katie was joined by regulars, screaming Mary and Skeletor, as well as fellow guest judge, Kenny Ortega. Woof, did you see Nigel’s hair?! DYING. What a creepy train wreck. Let’s get on to the dancing!
Holy moly, it’s the last elimination of the season before the title of America’s (Nigel’s) Favorite Dancer of So You Think You Can Dance Season Eight is announced! I can hardly believe that we’re at this stage of the competition already. It means that summer is winding down and pretty soon kids will be back to school! It’s not fair, we just started getting sunny weather here on the west coast! Sorry, back to the dancing!
The show opened with the standard group performance; however, this time the six remaining contestants took on a Justin Jiles Contemporary number. I’ll admit, I loved the camera work, with all elements in black and white except the bright pink flower in the center of the stage, at least for the first half the performance. This opening number was one of the prettiest, and best danced opening numbers of the season. I absolutely loved it and I really hope this becomes one of the numbers they use on the nation-wide tour. It was absolutely breathtaking.
Speaking of breathtaking, Cat Deeley looked INCREDIBLE this episode! Naturally, the judges were back sans Christina Applegate, which made me a little sad. For ONCE Nigel announced that the judges will not be making the decision as to whole will be leaving the competition, as they didn’t want to announce which two dancers were the top two, leaving the remaining four in the bottom (probably because Sasha and Melanie received an unbelievable number of votes compared to the rest of the dancers), with all of the dancers once again performing their solos.
Holy time flying batman! We are ONE WEEK away from the finale week of So You Think You Can Dance season eight, and tonight’s performances and America’s votes will decide which dancers will make it through to dance for one last time, and which performers will be sent home a week before having their possible dreams come true. How’s that for dramatic?! I am SO excited to see who will be crowned this year’s winner! Like DYING. At this point, if it isn’t Melanie, I am going to be making some SERIOUS phone calls to my friends south of the border.
In equally amazing news; Christina Applegate was the guest judge this week! Seriously, if there is one thing Nigel Lythgo got right this year, it was the selection of the weekly guest judges. Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Neil Patrick Harris, Kristin Chenoweth, Lady Gaga and now Christina Applegate?! This has been a year for AMAZING critics and unexpected laughs. Keep it up for next season! Christina is joined this week by Lil’ C, Screamin’ Mary and Skeletor.
What I don’t love is that we have a two-hour episode dedicated to six dancers, but who knows, maybe I’ll be surprised. (Doubtful). Each dancer will be performing two routines in pairs, and their best solo. Sigh. So much dance, and so much to critic.
So right out of the gate I am desperately excited to see what guest judge, Lady Gaga, will be wearing tonight and how her critics from Wednesday night’s performance show will shape the fates of the remaining eight dancers in So You Think You Can Dance. Apparently Gaga is performing in the results episode as well! HECK YEAH!
The final eight contestants opened the night in typical fashion, with a group routine performed to The Circus Sets Up from the Water for Elephants soundtrack. I absolutely love this instrumental tune, and the dance was gorgeous. The costumes and styling of each performer were stunning and incredibly true to the movie-adaptation of the novel. This piece had an incredible Cirque du Soleil clown vibe, and I didn’t want it to end. It was beautifully peaceful, and it brought Cat Deeley to tears. Surprizingly, this was a Tyce Diorio number and I’ll admit, this piece definitely redeemed his abilities as a choreographer in my eyes.
Dear Skeletor, why on earth do we still need to have a two-hour performance episode when we’re down to the top eight dancers?! I understand that each performer is dancing with an all star, but seriously, cut out the nonsense filler and give us the content we REALLY want to see – DANCING!
Holy SHIT I forgot LADY GAGA was a guest judge this week! YES! YES! YES!!! I will actually be listening to the commentary this week, just to see what she has to say about the different dancers and routines. That is, unless it ends up being incoherent nonsense and then I’ll just start fast-forwarding again! Did you see Gaga’s outfit?! It was AMAZEBALLS to the MAX! OH MY GOD I LOVE HER SO MUCH!! Mary Murphy, Skeletor and the second guest judge joined her for the week, the pumpkin, Rob Marshall. Did you see his spray tan?! Tonight is going to be amazing.
