Holy moly, it’s the last elimination of the season before the title of America’s (Nigel’s) Favorite Dancer of So You Think You Can Dance Season Eight is announced! I can hardly believe that we’re at this stage of the competition already. It means that summer is winding down and pretty soon kids will be back to school! It’s not fair, we just started getting sunny weather here on the west coast! Sorry, back to the dancing!
The show opened with the standard group performance; however, this time the six remaining contestants took on a Justin Jiles Contemporary number. I’ll admit, I loved the camera work, with all elements in black and white except the bright pink flower in the center of the stage, at least for the first half the performance. This opening number was one of the prettiest, and best danced opening numbers of the season. I absolutely loved it and I really hope this becomes one of the numbers they use on the nation-wide tour. It was absolutely breathtaking.
Speaking of breathtaking, Cat Deeley looked INCREDIBLE this episode! Naturally, the judges were back sans Christina Applegate, which made me a little sad. For ONCE Nigel announced that the judges will not be making the decision as to whole will be leaving the competition, as they didn’t want to announce which two dancers were the top two, leaving the remaining four in the bottom (probably because Sasha and Melanie received an unbelievable number of votes compared to the rest of the dancers), with all of the dancers once again performing their solos.
Holy time flying batman! We are ONE WEEK away from the finale week of So You Think You Can Dance season eight, and tonight’s performances and America’s votes will decide which dancers will make it through to dance for one last time, and which performers will be sent home a week before having their possible dreams come true. How’s that for dramatic?! I am SO excited to see who will be crowned this year’s winner! Like DYING. At this point, if it isn’t Melanie, I am going to be making some SERIOUS phone calls to my friends south of the border.
In equally amazing news; Christina Applegate was the guest judge this week! Seriously, if there is one thing Nigel Lythgo got right this year, it was the selection of the weekly guest judges. Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Neil Patrick Harris, Kristin Chenoweth, Lady Gaga and now Christina Applegate?! This has been a year for AMAZING critics and unexpected laughs. Keep it up for next season! Christina is joined this week by Lil’ C, Screamin’ Mary and Skeletor.
What I don’t love is that we have a two-hour episode dedicated to six dancers, but who knows, maybe I’ll be surprised. (Doubtful). Each dancer will be performing two routines in pairs, and their best solo. Sigh. So much dance, and so much to critic.
So right out of the gate I am desperately excited to see what guest judge, Lady Gaga, will be wearing tonight and how her critics from Wednesday night’s performance show will shape the fates of the remaining eight dancers in So You Think You Can Dance. Apparently Gaga is performing in the results episode as well! HECK YEAH!
The final eight contestants opened the night in typical fashion, with a group routine performed to The Circus Sets Up from the Water for Elephants soundtrack. I absolutely love this instrumental tune, and the dance was gorgeous. The costumes and styling of each performer were stunning and incredibly true to the movie-adaptation of the novel. This piece had an incredible Cirque du Soleil clown vibe, and I didn’t want it to end. It was beautifully peaceful, and it brought Cat Deeley to tears. Surprizingly, this was a Tyce Diorio number and I’ll admit, this piece definitely redeemed his abilities as a choreographer in my eyes.
Dear Skeletor, why on earth do we still need to have a two-hour performance episode when we’re down to the top eight dancers?! I understand that each performer is dancing with an all star, but seriously, cut out the nonsense filler and give us the content we REALLY want to see – DANCING!
Holy SHIT I forgot LADY GAGA was a guest judge this week! YES! YES! YES!!! I will actually be listening to the commentary this week, just to see what she has to say about the different dancers and routines. That is, unless it ends up being incoherent nonsense and then I’ll just start fast-forwarding again! Did you see Gaga’s outfit?! It was AMAZEBALLS to the MAX! OH MY GOD I LOVE HER SO MUCH!! Mary Murphy, Skeletor and the second guest judge joined her for the week, the pumpkin, Rob Marshall. Did you see his spray tan?! Tonight is going to be amazing.
You know the drill. I’m subbing in for Dan who is as bizzay as a drag queen the morning of a gay pride parade. Gurl has got to get her weave all done, get some pleather boots all zipped up, tie up her corset, and cake on that make up. Last night, the top ten started off the all-star portion of the show with mixed results. The girls definitely out danced the boys and drooled ever so slightly over Pasha. Two dancers are going home. Who will it be? Who is still in the running towards becoming America’s favorite dancer?
First up tonight was a rather uninspiring Broadway number by the top 10 to On Broadway. Surprisingly, it wasn’t a Tyce Diorio piece, but some other guy I didn’t catch the name of. What’s up with Broadway? I love musicals. I love a good song and dance… but the Broadway on this show consistently sucks. It’s almost as bad as Krump. Hopefully we get a better number at some point in the next hour.
Cat tells us how the eliminations will go down and it’s a bit different from year’s past. The bottom two guys and the bottom two girls will be revealed, but the JUDGES will decide who goes home. BULLSHIT. I hate Nigel and his constant manipulations. Just let the voters decide! That is unless he plans on saving Melanie from an early departure. THAT would be a travesty.
So Dan is BIZZAY again. That means you get another round of hot ginger dance recapping. And, what a week to do it! Top ten! All stars! Before we get to all that, I have to give Skeletor (AKA Nigel) some mild praise. He gets on my nerves more than Tyrant, but I have to applaud last week’s cuts. Alexander was holding Sasha back. It was so tragic. And Ryan? Good lord. When are the producers going to wake up to the fact that they cannot force their favourites on us? It always backfires. Ryan was in the bottom 3 FOUR times. And her solos really weren’t that amazing. Just because Mia wants a piece doesn’t mean the rest of us do. On the bright side… Ricky’s solo was stellar. I think that will help catapult him past the other guys now that Ryan is out of here. Here’s hoping we get some shirtless Pasha tonight!
We start off this week with the judges. Nigel blah blah. Mary wail wail. And…. NEIL PATRICK HARRIS! Shut up. It’s Doogie. No. It’s Barny. Love him. I feel like Doogie typing away. I should turn my screen blue.
It’s hard to believe we’re already at this stage of the competition, but after tonight’s results show we will have the official top ten dancers for So You Think You Can Dance season eight! Which dancers will move on and me part of the touring show this fall, and which two dancers will have their dreams cut short, being only one spot away from the top ten? Okay, I know that’s a bit dramatic since the majority of people know that the dancers cut tonight are often the substitutes for the touring show, so these people aren’t really going home in misery. Also, this means that next week the top ten dancers will split apart and dance with an all-star, meaning more of your favorite dancers from previous seasons are coming back again! I personally think this was the smartest move Skeletor ever made with the format of this show, as it truly allowed the viewers to reconnect with the people they were rooting for in previous years. Love it!
Who will be back? I’m really hoping that Kent Boyd will be back to show us how he’s grown as a dancer over the last year. Maybe a return of last year’s winner, Lauren, and cutie pie Robert too? I would love to see a return of Alison again, as she was fantastic last year, or season four winner, Joshua. Or Katie, or Kayla, really my list could go on and on and on! I’ll get back to business and get on with the show. (SORRY!)
Wow, after watching the results show for So You Think You Can Dance Canada this past week, and it being contained to thirty minutes, imagine my dismay when I checked the PVR and SYTYCD US was slated for TWO HOURS for six couples to dance…seriously Nigel, what are you trying to prove with all the unnecessary filler in your shows?! Cut it down and condense the awesome dancing to one hour, that’s all we need!! I presume each couple will be dancing twice, but I fast-forwarded through the opening monologue to at least cut some of the nonsense out!
After the couples and judges were introduced, including this week’s guest judges, Sonya Tayeh (a regular choreographer on the show) and Jesse Tyler Ferguson from the Emmy nominated comedy, Modern Family, we moved straight on to the dancing. Not really sure what Jesse’s connection to dance is, but I’m definitely excited to see him on the show for the week!
