CBS Renews Three Dramas & The CW Renews Eight Shows

In: Donovan, TV Shows

CBS and The CW were in generous moods this week. Both gave early renewals to several shows on their respective schedules.

Freshman shows on the eye network were especially lucky. Scorpion, NCIS: New Orleans, and Madam Secretary all received sophomore seasons. Among the bunch, NCIS: NO has the biggest ratings with 18.1 million on average, earning the distinction as the season’s most-watched new drama. Madam Secretary and Scorpion generate 14.9 million and 14.5 million respectively.

“These freshman dramas have each made a big impact on key nights of the week,” CBS entertainment chairman Nina Tassler said. “Creatively distinctive, the series are backed by strong showrunners with amazingly talented casts, and have resonated with a big, broad audience.”

Though not officially renewed, Tassler revealed that Stalker, also a new show, is still in consideration for another season. Among CBS’ new offerings, this is the one I watch so hopefully it gets a second year. Find out which shows on CBS’ sister network received good news.

In February, The CW gave early renewals for their best-performing shows. Arrow, Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries, The Originals and Reign all received another season. With upfronts just around the corner, the network is cleaning house. Find out which shows were canceled and were saved from the chopping block below.

But first, let’s briefly cover the four new shows the CW picked up. iZombie, Jane The Virgin, The Messengers and The Flash all received series orders. The latter isn’t surprising given all the hype and plot tie-ins to Arrow. Another potential spinoff, however, was nixed. Bloodlines which aired a backdoor pilot on a recent episode of Supernatural wasn’t picked up. More info about these shows will be released when The CW makes its formal presentation next week at the upfronts.

The CW Renews Fives Shows For Next Season

In: Donovan, TV Shows

The loving came early from The CW for their best-performing shows. The network gave renewals for five series for the 2014-2015 television season.

Not surprisingly, Arrow is among the bunch. The superhero series is the most-watched program (3.9 million) on The CW. Despite being in its ninth season, Supernatural posted double-digit increases year-to-year. The Vampire Diaries also was on the receiving end of good news from the network. Find out which freshmen series earned a sophomore season below.

Arguably, The CW has some of the hottest guys on network television. Hell, that’s why I tune in most of the time ;) Without a doubt, Stephen Amell from Arrow is at the top of that list. With his chiseled body and handsome face, this man just oozes sex appeal. Between you and me, the Oliver McQueen actor is as stunning in person. I often bump into him at the gym. Sufficed to say, I always try to get the treadmill with the best view.

As the old saying goes, it takes one to know one. The 31-year-old was put through a test from the folks over at TV Guide. His task was to identify which ripped set of abs belonged to a CW stud. Not surprisingly, dude earned a perfect score. Someone’s apparently been studying his fellow network colleagues’ assets. Watch the video below. After that, check out how I ranked the five guys. It’s pretty obvious who my No. 1 pick is. Be sure to comment on whether you agree or disagree with my rankings.

The CW Renews Three Shows For Next Season

In: Donovan, TV Shows

If you’re an avid Nielsen Ratings follower, The CW’s decision to renew these three shows shouldn’t be shocking. The only thing remotely surprising is that the network did it this early. The upfronts where networks reveal their 2013-14 schedules are still a few months away. That said, the news is always nice to hear especially to fans and the cast and crew of each show. Another year of regular pay cheques is always a good thing.

There’s no denying Arrow is the season’s breakout hit on The CW if not on all the broadcast networks. It arrived with a bang with 4.3 million viewers and consistently brings in viewers weekly. It’s the network’s most-watched show. Meanwhile, The Vampire Diaries is tops when it comes to the target demographic of adults and women between the ages of 18-34. The supernatural series will return for a fifth season.

The CW Promises Less Reruns

In: Donovan, TV Shows

Hallelujah. The CW is promising less reruns for its 2012-2012 season. Traditionally, the network has long periods of repeat programming, especially during the early part of the calendar year. These days most dramas receive a 22-episode order, but The CW is changing that. As part of new CW president Mark Pedowitz’s intent to shorten rerun periods, he’s upping the episode order for four of its shows.

Which shows are getting a beefed up season? According to Deadline, “Gossip Girl” and “90210” will each be receiving two extra episodes each, bringing their season total to 24. “Supernatural” and “Nikita” will be the recipient of one episode each, upping their season to 23 episodes. Hell yeah. I watch all but one of those shows, so I’m excited about the news. I’d rather have a crappy episode than no episode at all.

Which Shows Have The Highest Ad Rates?

In: Donovan, TV Shows

By gathering data from media buying firms, Advertising Age’s annual survey reveals which primetime TV shows have the priciest asking price for commercials. Even though American Idol’s ratings dropped last year, and the upcoming season is without Simon Cowell, the Fox show is still the most expensive show to book commercial spots.

According to estimates, Idol is commanding $467,000 for a 30-second spot which is $50,000 more than the next expensive show. NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” came in second with $415,000, while Idol’s results show ranked third with its $400,000 asking price.

Rounding out the top ten are “Glee” ($272,694), “Family Guy” ($259,289), “The Simpsons” ($253,170), “House” ($226,180), “Grey’s Anatomy” ($222,113), “The Office” ($213,617), and “Desperate Housewives” ($210,064). Both “Family Guy” and “The Simpsons” ranked high because both shows draw huge numbers of young men whom advertisers love. It’s clear that Fox was a clear winner in the survey. The network had five out of the six most expensive shows.

Normally a show with two incredibly handsome actors would be a shoe-in for a spot on my TV viewing schedule, but for some reason or another, I’ve never watched an episode of The CW’s “Supernatural“. Maybe it’s the Friday night timeslot? Whatever it is, I’m a “Supernatural” virgin. That doesn’t mean, however, I can’t appreciate the juicy man candy on the show.

Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki play brothers, Dean and Sam Winchester, who hunt demons and other figures of the paranormal. The show is its six and rumored final season. When surfing the web for pictures for this post, I was like a dog heat looking at the copious amounts of sexy images of two actors. See the fruits of my labor below.

Take a look at some basic stats of the two, before we dissect which Winchester brother is hotter?
