Topher’s Top Ten Albums of 2010

In: Music, Topher

There’s still a few weeks left in the year, but a few publications have released their top of 2010 lists already (Rolling Stone, The Onion’s AV Club). I haven’t seen anything on the horizon that piques my interest, so I’m confident in posting my list a little early as well. I’m not a professional music critic, so there are a few albums I didn’t get the chance to fully listen to that might have made the list. I really enjoyed the following 10 albums a lot this year, whether at work, at the gym, or riding around town on my bike. I don’t think my music tastes will line up with some (read: most) of the other cast members, but here we go.

10. Girl Talk – All Day

This is more of a nod for Greg Gillis than the actual album itself. I mean, I’m pretty much his exact target audience: 80s born, pop culture enthusiast with a short attention span. That broad brush covers a whole whack of my peers as well, so it’s no surprise that Girl Talk has had so much success the last few years. All Day marks his fifth album, and 2nd since his rise to fame with Night Ripper. The mixes between old school hits and new school rhymes continue, but this time Gillis gives them a little bit more time to breathe. I love Girl Talk live, and Night Ripper and Feed The Animals were on my playlist for a LONG time. All Day doesn’t have as much staying power. The Beyonce / M.O.D. / Miley Cyrus mix is great, and there are a lot of places on the album that sound amazing, but I’d rather hear it live.

Spin Magazine Names Best 40 Albums of 2010

In: Donovan, Music

Spin Magazine just ranked their Top 40 albums of 2010. Even though the magazine has a tendency to skew more alternative-rock, the list includes several hip-hop and pop acts. In fact, the top spot goes to Kanye West’s “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy“. Earlier this week, West’s opus also claimed the No. 2 spot on MySpace’s year end list. In an earlier album review, Spin called the album:

“a ballsy, self-aware admonition that luxuriates in its grandiose reveal as an Assholes Anonymous orgy that gets nowhere close to serenity.”

Homorazzi.com favorite Robyn also made the list. Surprisingly it was only her Body Talk Pt. 1 CD that made the cut. You would’ve thought Spin would’ve included all three parts of her amazing trilogy on the list. Unfortunately for the Swedish singer, she also didn’t receive a lot of love during this year’s Grammy nomination announcement. She received only one nod for “Dancing On My Own“. Check out what other albums made Spin Magazine’s cut below.

Concert Review: Robyn

In: Dan, Music

She did it. She came to Vancouver. She showed Vancouver what it was like to party like it’s 1999. She sang songs from her latest album. She made everyone remember exactly why he or she loves her. She made everyone remember why they love every single person they have standing next to them, when the times get tough.

Robyn. The girl from 1997 who release an album in the US with different album covers. I personally remember the gold and red cover art. I was 12 years old.

The reason I am writing this way is simply due to the gin. And the absolute love that I have developed for the artist that is Robyn.

Robyn Is Tubular In Her Indestructible Music Video

In: Music, Patrick

Love the song. Love the video. Her videos are always so simple, yet creative and beautifully shot. This video focuses on love scenes between a woman and her man, then later that woman with two other women (and no man). All this while intermittently cutting back to Robyn, who has colored fluid pumping around her body by way of her water jacket.

Robyn has been engaged to her Olof Inger, a mixed martial artist & artist since 2008, and has been with him since 2002. Perhaps she dedicates this song to him? I really like the lyrics as their very relate-able. The song addresses the insecurities one can have in a relationship, simply based on what others may have done in the past, but then letting all of that go and loving the person as if nothing bad has ever happened.

Indestructible is the first an only single from her third album in the series, Body Talk Part 3, which is coming out November 29th.

Robyn Releases Body Talk Album Art AND Track List

In: Music, Tyrell

YES YES YES! The anticipation for this album couldn’t be higher. After Pt. 1 and Pt. 2 did not disappoint, I am sure that Pt. 3 will be amaze balls. Today, Robyn released on her website an official release of the artwork for the album as well as the official track list. I wrote a post a bit ago with some details about the album saying that Pt. 3 would contain songs from both Pt. 1 and 2 as well as some new material.

This is all confirmed now!

We’ve been blessed with another amazing gift from Swedish pop goddess, Robyn. The singer just released the single edit of her new single “Indestructible” and it’s… FANTASTIC. If you loved the acoustic version found on “Body Talk, Pt. 2″, then you’re going to love the new treatment. The new version is the lead single from the third and final installment of her “Body Talk” album series.

Just like the makeover she did with “Hang With Me”, Robyn swapped the orchestral backing acoustics of “Indestructible”, with mid-tempo electro-pop beats. The result is another danceable, remix-ready track ready to invade the clubs. Even with the reworking, the song’s message about the downside of needing someone is still in tact. Check out the track below. Robyn also included a hot dance remix by The Krays on her Soundcloud account.

Robyn Brings Us Body Talk Pt. 3

In: Music, Tyrell

Robyn is set to release Pt. 3 of her Body Talk album series on November 29th and I couldn’t be more excited. This trilogy of albums have redefined Robyn and pop music as a whole. Digital Spy is reporting this morning that the lead single off Pt. 3 will be a “pulsating full-power version” of Pt. 2′s acoustic (and very beautiful) Indestructible. AMAZE BALLS!

If you remember, Pt. 1 gave us the acoustic version of Hang With Me and Pt. 2 brought us the up tempo version. This time around, Robyn is bringing us 5 songs from Pt. 1, 5 songs from Pt. 2 and 5 BRAND NEW TRACKS for Pt. 3. Wow. I cannot wait.

Gossip Girl: Robyn Heads To The Upper East Side

In: Donovan, Music

Last year Lady Gaga performed “Bad Romance” for the Upper East Siders of “Gossip Girl“, this year another hot solo singer is dropping by. Site favorite, Robyn, is making a surprise visit for Blair Waldorf’s upcoming birthday bash. Lucky girl. How do I get Robyn to show up at my next birthday celebration?

The Swedish superstar tweeted a photo from set yesterday. Hopefully her performance on the hit show will be what she needs to break into the US mainstream market. A huge favorite amongst the gays and hipsters, Robyn is nowhere near the sensation she is in her native Sweden. C’mon America, show her some love. At the very least, maybe this guest spot will promote her from commercial break segue act to full-fledged performer at next year’s MTV Video Music Awards. Many of Robyn’s fans took to the web to express their disappointment that her “Dancing On My Own” performance was disrupted for a Verizon commercial.
