Last year Lady Gaga performed “Bad Romance” for the Upper East Siders of “Gossip Girl“, this year another hot solo singer is dropping by. Site favorite, Robyn, is making a surprise visit for Blair Waldorf’s upcoming birthday bash. Lucky girl. How do I get Robyn to show up at my next birthday celebration?
The Swedish superstar tweeted a photo from set yesterday. Hopefully her performance on the hit show will be what she needs to break into the US mainstream market. A huge favorite amongst the gays and hipsters, Robyn is nowhere near the sensation she is in her native Sweden. C’mon America, show her some love. At the very least, maybe this guest spot will promote her from commercial break segue act to full-fledged performer at next year’s MTV Video Music Awards. Many of Robyn’s fans took to the web to express their disappointment that her “Dancing On My Own” performance was disrupted for a Verizon commercial.
The 2010 MTV Music Video Awards are officially in the history books. What will the footnote be for this year’s telecast… zzzzzzzzz snoozefest. . Seriously, I found myself fast-forwarding through a lot of it this year. Perhaps because, there wasn’t that one big water cooler moment, everyone would be talking about the next day, or maybe because host Chelsea Handler failed to make me laugh or was it the lackluster performances. Whatever it was, it just didn’t live up to the hype. Maybe I’m being a little harsh due to the fact I high expectations for the show. Regardless of the negative nelly overall opinion, there were a few memorable moments worth mentioning. As a side note, can you spot SYTYCD alums Mark Kanemura and Neil Haskell in the picture above?
While most people watch the MTV Video Music Awards for out-of-this-world performances or insane WTF moments, there are plenty who tune in just to see what the celebrities are wearing. Especially whenever Lady Gaga is present, you know you’ll be in for a visual feast. It seemed whenever The Fame Monster took home an award, she was wearing another unforgettable outfit.
When she won the award for “Best Pop Video“, she wore a voluminous black Giorgio Armani dress. To accept “Best Video of The Year“, she wore a “meat dress” by designer Franc Fernandez. The meat was treated and cleaned and no blood was dripping. But more importantly, did it smell? For her grand entrance on the white carpet, Gaga wore Alexander McQueen head to toe to pay homage to her friend.
Now that you have all three looks side-by-side, which one did she rock the best? Personally, I thought she looked amazing in the McQueen ensemble. Vote below. Be sure to read the rest of this post to vote in other fashion battles from last night’s VMAs.
I came across a video of current successful Swedish pop princess Robyn doing a version of Bjork‘s Hyperballad today. She performed the song with a full orchestra at the Polar Music Prize ceremony. Bjork was one of the recipients of the award, and was sitting right in front of Robyn as she sang.
It’s awful. I hate to say that since I love Bjork and Robyn, but Robyn does not have the chops to belt out such a vocal heavy song such as Hyperballad. I felt a little uncomfortable watching the blonde pixie dressed up as the “president of the Philipines”, struggle with the loud high notes. Bjork didn’t seem to happy either. Look at her expression at 1:42, eeps. I’d be a little peeved if I were her too if someone covered a 15 year old song of mine, considering all the great music I’ve been putting out since then.
I had high hopes for this before I heard it. Robyn has some great emotional songs, and it would seem like she could really give a powerful performance of the song, but she doesn’t put any life into it. When I saw Bjork perform this at Sasquatch back in 2007 it was one of the most thrilling live performances I’ve ever seen.
First off, let’s get this out of the way that I’m SO jealous that Alex got to see Robyn & Kelis in concert in LA over the weekend – Amazing. That being said, I woke up this morning to a new video from Robyn for her single, “Hang With Me,” which is…you know…almost as good as seeing her and Kelis in concert. Wah wah.
Robyn’s videos are always incredibly visually stimulating and this one is no exception. There’s a lot going on in this video. Robyn invites you to hang with her in this video as she portrays herself…performing in concert, traveling, signing autographs for fans, and just hanging out – showing more of her real life and what that must be like, rather than just a story that goes along with the lyrics.
After her tour with Kelis, she’s releasing Body Talk Part 2 on September 6th which will contain a duet with none other than Snoop Dogg.
This past Friday I was lucky enough to score tickets to the All Hearts Tour with co-headliners Robyn and Kelis and it was so, so good. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, living in LA provides so many opportunities to see amazing music acts. If you get the chance to visit, or even move down, there is never a shortage of entertainment no matter what your flava.
Ok, so back to Robyn/Kelis. The night opened up at The Music Box with Dan Black (?), which I missed because LA traffic can be crazy, I’m always late and I have no idea who Dan Black is. Next on stage was Kelis and she not only rocked it, but is now my inspiration for Halloween. Homegirl was lookin’ fierce in a Romy & Michelle-esque shiny pink halter-paint outfit and silver beaded Cleopatra-style wig. Most people know Kelis from her hit songs ‘Milkshake‘ and ‘Bossy,’ but with her new album Flesh Tone, she’s gettin’ the gays attention while still pleasing the straights. My favorite songs off the album are ‘Acapella,’ ‘4th of July‘ and ‘Scream,’ all of which she performed Friday. Only complaint was that her mic seemed really low and she already has a deep voice, so it was kind of hard to hear her, other than that – loved her.
“Don’t F*cking Tell Me What To Do“! Well, actually she does. Robyn premiered her new web video for that track. It’s the first 3D video entirely written in code with content being fed by fans via Twitter. The video is a unique experience with every view as it re- generates with each loading of the URL. The first portion of the video features visualization of Robyn’s lyrics in 3D.
The rest of the video is created by users themselves who tweet in what is killing them using the Twitter hash tag, #killingme. These tweets are themselves visualized and credited to the user. The video has the potential to become the infinite video as users can continue to add on to the endless stream of #killingme comments. How awesome is that?
Robyn + Alicia Keys. What a perfect way to end a week. When I first heard Robyn had covered Alicia Keys’ hit “Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart“, I had to Google it immediately. After checking it out, it felt like Christmas in June. It was two of my favorite things jammed up in a nicely packaged four minutes.
Robyn dropped by BBC1′s Live Lounge to promote her album, “Body Talk Pt. 1” which dropped this week. During her live session, the Swedish pop star performed two songs. The aforementioned cover of Alicia’s track and Robyn’s current hit “Dancing On My Own“.
I love hearing Robyn’s signature pop vocals on Alicia’s heart-aching R&B ballad. There’s a sense of an innocent pained soulfulness to Robyn’s interpretation of the track. It literally sent tingles up my spine.
