While it doesn’t come with as much fanfare as Arrested Development or House of Cards, Netflix’s new original series Orange Is The New Black is worth giving a shot. Not only is it winning critics over, but the on-demand Internet streaming media provider is so bullish on the dramedy that it ordered a second season even before premiering. That’s almost unheard of.
Orange Is The New Black is the brainchild of Weeds creator Jenji Kohan. It follows Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling), an upper-middle class bisexual woman who finds herself incarcerated for a crime she committed 10 years prior. It’s actually based on Piper Kerman’s memoir sharing her experiences serving a 14-month sentence in a women’s prison in 2004. While the main character is based on Kerman, the rest of the characters are fictional. Rounding out the cast are Jason Biggs, Kate Mulgrew, Laura Pepron and Natasha Lyonne.
If the trailer above piques your interest, all thirteen episodes of Orange Is The New Black are available online on Netflix beginning Thursday at 12 a.m. PDT.
