Selena Gomez Banned From Entering Russia

In: Donovan, Music

In the wake of Madonna and Lady Gaga openly defying Russia’s anti-gay law on their soil, the government is making entry into the country more difficult for foreign performers according to the Moscow Times. Russian conservatives tried to file lawsuits against them in the spirit of the controversial law banning the promotion of “nontraditional sexual relationships” to minors that came into effect this summer.

The first one affected by the tougher restrictions is Selena Gomez. The powers that be obviously perceive her as pro-gay, which I assume is probably true. The “Slow Down” singer is forced to cancel two scheduled shows in St. Petersburg and Moscow on September 23 and 25 respectively due to her visa being declined. As someone’s who’s seen her Stars Dance World Tour, they’re missing out. At least from what I can remember ;)

Lady Gaga gets up close and personal with Elle magazine for their October 2013 issue. The “Applause” singer discusses the pressure of being her public persona, firing back at her critics and why she changed her name. Check out a few quotes from her chat with the publication below, along with a couple pics snapped by photographer Ruth Hogben.

On Firing Back At Her Critics

“Everyone is so cynical – that I can’t purely love my fans, or share an honest story about my past, without someone asking me if I really, truly struggled. Do you know how much dirt I ate? Do you know the men I had to crawl through, the people that disrespected my body, my mind, my heart?”

Being the good little drag queen that she is, Lady Gaga took on one of the biggest gay icons ever… Judy Garland. The 27-year-old singer wore her best gingham outfit and performed “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” before breaking out into her current single, “Applause.” She even had a dog in tow, albeit a confused scared one but a dog nonetheless. Poor guy, had no idea what was going on.

Much like her MTV VMA performance, Mother Monster underwent several costumes changes on stage. She started as Dorothy before transitioning into Glinda the Good Witch, the Wicked Witch of the West, and even an apple tree. One of the highlights occurred at the end when Gaga said, “There’s no place like ‘Good Morning America,’” swapping out “home” for the ABC morning show. Check out her performance below.

Saturday Night Live is bringing in the big guns to open its 39th season. Tina Fey returns to her former stomping grounds to guest host the September 28 episode. This will mark her fourth time hosting the show. Joining her as the musical guest are Arcade Fire. Coincidentally enough, it’s also their fourth appearance on the show. Find out who else is heading to SNL in the coming weeks below.

Lady Gaga is set to perform at London’s iTunes Festival on Sunday. All week long, the “Applause” singer has been uploading rehearsal footage on YouTube. Each new clip gives a short preview of a track off her ARTPOP album.

The audio quality of the videos isn’t the greatest, but it definitely provides a glimpse of whats to come from her upcoming effort. By far “Sex Dreams” which she released today has the most potential with “Swine” coming a close second. Not really feeling “Manicure” but that could be due to Gaga’s intentional obstruction of the sound.

“THE SOUND QUALITY OF THESE CLIPS HAS BEEN OBSTRUCTED TO GIVE YOU A TASTE OF ARTPOP BUT ULTIMATELY CONFUSE YOU UNTIL SUNDAY” – Lady Gaga

There’s just no stopping him. Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines” clocks in another week on top of the Billboard Hot 100. The monster hit rules for a 12th week joining an elite group of 14 songs to spend at least twelve weeks as No. 1. If “Lines” can keep its grasp on the pole position for four more weeks, it could tie Mariah Carey and Boyz II Mens’ epic duet, “One Sweet Day,” as the longest-running chart-topper.

Holding steady at No. 2 is “Roar” by Katy Perry. With “Lines” slowly eroding in airplay, Perry could unseat him in the coming weeks. On the flip side, Lady Gaga’s “Applause” rises from 6-4 on the strength of the accompanying music video. Streaming on YouTube, Vevo and other online sites now factor with chart placement. Sandwiched in between the two ladies is Thicke’s VMAs duet partner Miley Cyrus with her hit, “We Can’t Stop.”

2013 MTV Video Music Awards: Five Takeaways

In: Donovan, Music

By the time I got home last night from my camping weekend trip, I was too exhausted to watch the MTV Music Video Awards. I finally got around to checking out the telecast this afternoon. Thankfully, for the power of digital recording devices, I was able to go through the entire program in half the time. Overall, it wasn’t a bad show with a handful of highlights. Check out my top five takeaways from the 2013 MTV VMAs below.

Well, that didn’t take very long. Just a week after Lady Gaga released “Applause,” Kia uses it for its new commercial. Was Katy Perry’s “Roar” too expensive to license? I kid.

For the new clip, the Korean car manufacturer puts its rodent mascots to work (literally). The Kia hamsters transform themselves from frumpy to lean, mean, head-turning machines, much like their all-new Kia Soul. Watch as they hit the gym and shed their furry folds to Gaga’s latest anthem. Check out the cute commercial below.
