Lady Gaga Homages Via Barbie Dolls

In: Donovan, Music

Entertainment Weekly has done a wicked homage to one of their “Entertainers of the Year” for 2010. Using Barbie dolls as a blank canvas, their prop stylists transformed the original fashionista into various incarnations of Lady Gaga. Their concept to honor the pop diva in this way was ingenious and at moments, hilarious. A fitting tribute to an artist that transcended from pop-culture phenomenon to a true icon this past year.

Photographer Matthias Clamer was responsible for capturing the dolls in their various costumes and chose environments that truly reflected the original inspiration. For the image above, the stylists tried to recreate Gaga’s headline-grabbing meat dress at this year’s VMAs. Using dental floss, the prop stylists tied meat onto Barbie’s feet. The Cher doll looks pretty fierce as well.

I’ve selected a few other of my favorite images from EW’s “Barbie Goes (Lady) Gaga photo series and pasted them below. Check them out.

The 2011 Grammy Awards Nominees Announced…

In: Music, Patrick

Last night, the Grammy nominees for 2011 were announced with a performance filled evening by the best of the best at the Grammy Nomination Concert, including Katy Perry, Train, Bruno Mars, Justin Bieber, and more. The night was hosted by LL Cool J who was “Doin’ It Well”, and with special presentations by some talented people including Stevie Wonder.

As for nominations, it’s definitely a successful “Recovery” by Eminem as he comes out on top with a whopping 10 nominations, with his collaboration with Rihanna receiving a few of those nominations! Following that, Bruno Mars received 7 nominations, Lady Gaga, Lady Antebellum, and Jay Z with 6 nominations.

A few predictions would be that Lady Gaga gets Album of the Year, Justin Bieber gets New Artist of the Year, and Lady Antebellum gets Song of the Year for “Need You Now”. The awards take place on Sunday, February 13th, 2011. The concert didn’t show even close to all of the nominations, so you can check them out below.

With An Ego Like This, Lady Gaga Better Not Disappoint

In: Music, Patrick

Holy Ego, Batman! Lady Gaga has been majorly talking up her next album lately (which comes out next year), but she’s taken it to another level. She announced to her Polish fans that the album will have around 20 new tracks. While performing in Gdansk, she said to her fans:

“I promise you, I’ll never let you down. And not for nothing. The album’s finished and it’s f*cking really good. So whatever you just did for all of us…I promise to give you the greatest album of this decade, just for you.”

Wowsa! I’m pretty excited about it for a few reasons. (1) She hasn’t had a bad album yet. (2) I’m sick of her previous albums…only from over listening to them. (3) There are about 20 tracks…which is more than previous albums and almost double of what has become the industry norm. (4) I’ve had a nice break from Gaga. For the longest time, it was Gaga overload and I’ve enjoyed not having anything new from her for a while…but she’ll be welcome back in my iPod next year when her new album comes out.

The “Queen of Twitter” is signing off all social media platforms this Wednesday, which is World AIDS Day, to benefit Alicia Keys’ AIDS charity, Keep a Child Alive. She’ll be joining Justin TImberlake, Usher, Jennifer Hudson, Ryan Seacrest, Kim and Khloe Kardashian, Elijah Wood, Serena Williams, Janelle Monae and Keys’ husband, Swizz Beatz who are all signing off to support the campaign. The charity will accept donations through text messages and the participants will sign back on when the charity raises $1m.

The celebrities have filmed “last tweet and testament” videos and will appear in ads showing them lying in coffins to represent what the campaign calls their digital deaths. The new campaign is called Digital Life Sacrifice. The monies raised will support families affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa and India.

First Lady, Michelle Obama has officially been ranked the most powerful woman in the world by Forbes Magazine. I guess being married to the most powerful man in the world (depending on how you look at it) has something to do with it.

She was popular amongst the citizens right from the get go and she hasn’t let them down. She’s more involved in policy than Laura Bush was, but she has stayed away from hard policy (unlike Hillary Clinton). As Forbes put it, “A fashion icon and an athletic mother of two, she’s Jackie Kennedy with a law degree from Harvard and street sense from Chicago’s South Side.” Well said. 54% of Americans view her favorably.

Some of the top 10 most powerful women in the world are in our face & ears all the time, consisting of TWO talk show hosts, TWO pop stars (that have done a duet). Others include successful political or business women. For Top 10, keep reading…

Top 10 World’s Most Powerful Women after the jump…

When the second half of Glee‘s first season finished airing, I was sorta over it. It wasn’t nearly as good as the first half. But that all changed, after watching last night’s season premiere. The episode titled “Auditions” was probably one of the best Glee episodes ever. The producers brought the show back on track (IMHO).

It was more about storytelling and character development, rather than randomly creating situations just to include certain songs. While I’m a huge fan of showtunes and old 80s ballads, I was loving the more contemporary approach the episode took. Four of the five songs were actually released within the past couple of years.

Overall it was a great start to a new season. The entire segment with Jacob Israel filming a documentary as a nod to all the real life haters to start the show was a stroke of genius. But I do agree, Mr. Schue needs to never rap AGAIN. Jacob seriously needs to have his own webisodes. Fox are you listening. Make it happen.

A few quick random thoughts about last night. Welcome back, bitchy Quinn. I missed you so. Loving the the Asian loving, though I sorta miss “Artina“. Rachel’s new bangs really suit her. Her un-PC way of talking to Sunshine had me inappropriately laughing on the floor. Once again, Kurt’s scene stealing was a highlight of the show. That Best Supporting nod was well-deserved. Didn’t think I was going to like Coach Beiste, but she won me over. How hilarious was it when Cheyenne Jackson put on Sunshine’s Hello Kitty-type backpack. Hilar-balls.

GLEE SEASON 2, EPISODE 1 PERFORMANCES

GLEE CAST: Empire State of Mind (Jay-Z ft. Alicia Keys)

The producers couldn’t have picked a better song to kick off the second season. With the Nationals taking place in New York City this year, this ode to the Big Apple was perfect. We often don’t get scenes filmed outdoors, so this was an unexpected treat. As usual, snippets of Kurt and his dance moves had me in stitches. If anyone knows where I can get the t-shirts the Gleeks are wearing, hit me up. Me likey.

Courtney Love Covers “Bad Romance”

In: Donovan, Music

During a recent performance at DeLeon Tequila Rock Lounge in New York City, Courtney Love channeled her inner Lady Gaga and tackled one of her biggest hits. The 46-year-old rocker belted out a cover of “Bad Romance” at the trendy hotspot. After her performance, the trainwreck shouted, “Done! Thank you! Never ever again, so I hope it was good for you!” That’s a good thing, because the cover was bad, bad, bad.

I normally like covers, but listening to the former front lady for Hole, breathing laboriously throughout the song was painful. Even more painful was watching her trying to hit certain notes, but to no avail. Note to Courtney, just because you add a few expletives, it doesn’t make you cool nor edgy. And another thing, it would be a good idea if you actually knew the majority of the lyrics. Someone should really send this video to Lindsay Lohan with the memo attached, “this could be you in 20 years if you keep on, keeping on“.

Attention Lady Gaga monsters. If you live, breathe and adore the “Bad Romance” singer to death, then you have to check this out. Fresh off her big night at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, Gaga is riding even higher than before. In honor of all her achievements, Billboard Magazine just released a special collector’s edition, Lady Gaga supplement. The publication includes oodles of Gaga content to fulfill the most hardcore of fans.

With 17 dedicated, exclusive pictures and facts, you can catch up on your Gaga trivia with ease. To boot, the online version has direct links to song and album previews. It also includes an in depth look at her singles and album chart performances in detail. My favorite part of the supplement is the timeline of Gaga’s fame. It’s amazing to see exactly how much she’s achieved in such a short time period.
