Ya Know, I Just Don’t Like Katy Perry

In: Music, Nic, Totally GAY!

I’ll admit it. When Katy Perry (…ya…I’m gonna call you Caty), first came out, I was on it like a homosexual on a new beautiful female solo pop act. Katy debuted with the mildly offensive “Ur So Gay” in 2007, and with a rare, ego boosting nod from Madge herself, so I stood up and paid attention. It was funny, I think Vancouverites could relate to the then still trendy scenester boys and the scarves she was singing about. She followed up with the continuing theme of passive and again mildly offensive same sex themes when she broke number one for seven consecutive weeks on Billboard when she crooned about kissing another chick, and her controversy gave her the fame she needed.

Beth Ditto was the one to finally go on record about what was in the back of some of our minds. I know I was thinking it.

I hate Katy Perry! She’s offensive to gay culture, I’m so offended. She’s just riding on the backs of our culture, without having to pay any of the dues and not being actually lesbian or anything at all. She’s on the cover of a fucking gay magazine.”

Some thought this a little farfetched. I had discussions with friends about it. The jury was split between homophobia, and camp cheek. But Beth’s point was noted. Was it really the perogative of a straight person to be able to use decades of fighting for rights and to be taken seriously, to make money and gain fame, or was this a great way to put free sexuality into the mainstream? Regardless, it came down to personal opinion and the single was a hit.

Inspired by yesterday’s landmark overthrow of Prop 8, Lady Gaga immediately began writing and later shared her inspiration with her fans…a little birdie told them (a Twitter bird that is).

“At the moments notice of PROP 8 DEATH I instantly began to write music. BUBBLE DREAMS FOREVER! FULL EQUALITY! THIS IS JUST THE BEGININNG!”

…and

“REJOICE and CELEBRATE gay communities and straight all over the world. Our voices are being heard! Loud! SCREAM LOUD AMERICANOS!”

With so many gay fans and with her overwhelming support for equal rights, I’m sure she won’t let us down and the song will be well received by one and all.

What do you think the song name could be? GLAAD Romance? Boys Boys Boys (Can Marry Each Other)? Who knows.

PS: What the hell does “BUBBLE DREAMS FOREVER!” even mean?

The nominations for this year’s MTV Video Awards are out, and it’s all about the Gaga. The Fame Monster leads all nominees with a record 13 nominations, the most ever by a single artist in one year. On top of that, Lady Gaga is also the first female artist nominated for two different videos for the prestigious “Video of the Year”. Here’s what the Bad Romance singer had to say about her accolades:

“I’m so honored for all the little monsters and self-professed freaks of the universe, to have more VMA nominations in a single year than any artist in MTV history. Ironically, I’m even more proud it’s an unlucky number; 13,” said Lady Gaga. “A long time ago the world told me and my little monsters we would never be heard, together we changed the rules. God put me on Earth for 3 reasons: To make loud music, gay videos, and cause a damn raucous. Thank You MTV!”

Coming in with the second most nominations is Eminem, while rapper B.o.B. scores five and newcomer Ke$ha Tik Toks with three nods. Also scoring first time nominations are: Justin Bieber, Drake, Florence + The Machine and Mumford and Sons.

The “2010 MTV Video Music Awards” will air live from Nokia Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, September 12, 2010 at 9PM (Live ET/Tape delayed PT.) I wonder if anything well top the Kanye West/Taylor Swift debacle from last year. From a publishing editorial point of view, I DEARLY HOPE SO. MTV will announce additional performers, presenters and host on a later date.

BEST COLLABORATION

  • B.o.B featuring Hayley Williams, “Airplanes”
  • Beyoncé featuring Lady Gaga, “Video Phone (Extended Remix)”
  • Lady Gaga featuring Beyoncé, “Telephone”
  • 3OH!3 featuring Ke$ha, “My First Kiss”
  • Jay-Z & Alicia Keys, “Empire State of Mind”

SHOULD WIN: Lady Gaga featuring Beyoncé, “Telephone”
WILL WIN: Jay-Z & Alicia Keys, “Empire State of Mind”

Beyonce & Lady Gaga in one video. How can they not win? Thank God they worked out the kinks of working together in that less-than-stellar Videophone. I fear Gaga and B will cannibalize each other, therefore giving Jiggaman and Keys the win. Also, MTV won’t pass up on the chance to get those two on stage.

Most Viewed YouTube Video of ALL TIME

In: Celeb Gossip & News, Patrick

Now that’s what I call Bieber Fever! Justin Bieber has surpassed Lady Gaga in having the most viewed YouTube video (Baby) of all time. YouTube made the announcement via Twitter, tweeting the news to Mr. Bieber himself:

“Well, look at that: @justinbieber passes @ladygaga for Most Viewed Video of All Time http://youtu.be/kffacxfA7G4 = 245,074,968 views.”

As of this morning (July 16th), “Baby” had already risen to 246,295,440 views, after only being uploaded 4 months ago. Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” sits in the number two spot with 245,596,709 views, added 7 months ago. It’s definitely the crazy Bieber tweens worshiping their idol that put Bieber on top.

If you feel like adding more to the tally, feel free to watch the video again, baby.

Need You Now Wow!! When it isn’t Lady Gaga, it’s Lady Antebellum apparently. To add to what Donovan informed you about last week about the chart toppers and records for first week of release sales, Billboard have finalized their calculations for the best selling albums of 2010 so far and apparently fans heard their cry (“Need You Now“) and bought the album – approximately 2.5 million of them so far! Such a beautiful song with great lyrics (I know Dan agrees!). The hit single, “Need You Now” has also spent multiple weeks on top of the Top 200 this year and needless to say, the album is also 2010′s best selling country set so far.

In second place, Canadian Justin Bieber‘s “My World 2.0″ is has sold 1.4 million albums and marching into third is the legendary Sade with her new album, “Soldier of Love” with just over 1.2 million (also top R&B album). There is another Lady on the list and of course that’s Gaga, with her “The Fame” taking the fourth place spot just shy of Sade’s sales. Eminem makes a literal Recovery by taking the fifth spot at 1.1 million albums sold (and is also top rap record).

What’s your favorite album of 2010 so far?

Is That You, Lady(boy) GaGa?

In: Alex, Celeb Gossip & News

Photos of model ‘Jo Calderone,’ posing for Vogue Hommes Japan have started to trickle out to the www and I must say that this Jo character looks very familiar.  There is some speculation that Jo Calderone is the alter ego for none other than (dun, dun, dun….) Lady GaGa.  It really wouldn’t surprise me if this was another Lady GaGa reinvention of herself, however she could just be doing something unique for a photo shoot.  I will say though, that – if this is her – she is actually looking quite tame and rockin’ that 1950′s James Dean hair style.  She is giving me a little bit of a lesbian vibe, not gonna lie.  And that shirt is unbuttoned awfully low, especially if her bubbies are tapped down.

Check out the rest of the pics on ShowStudio.com and decide if you think that Jo Calderone is really just a slinky male model or if it is in fact Ms. GaGa’s alter ego.  My vote goes for alter ego…

Forbes Top 10 Most Powerful Celebrities

In: Celeb Gossip & News, Patrick

Forbes has just released their report for the World’s Most Powerful Celebrities, and it’s a very interesting list. I find the top 10 list to be interesting for a variety of reasons: Two successful stars were affected by infidelity scandals in the past year, two of the stars collaborated on a song and did a music video together, one just a few years ago was a complete trainwreck, three were on a talk show this past season on one episode, and two of them are big on the political seen in terms of human rights and giving back, and two of them have french kissed before.

The list starts with the Queen of Pop, but rest assured she’s not the only female pop powerhouse to make it into the top 10. The criteria considered for making the list includes their pay, tv/radio rank, press rank, web rank, and social rank. Here is the top ten for 2010…

10. Madonna

    Breakdown:

  • Pay: $58M
  • TV/Radio Rank: 16
  • Press Rank: 3
  • Web Rank: 4
  • Social Rank: 33

The Power of Madonna, as the Glee episode goes. She even has the ability to help free prisoners from Malawi that were unjustly imprisoned for being in a gay relationship.

Semi Precious Weapons: “You Love You” CD

In: Donovan, Music

New York glam rockers Semi Precious Weapons drop their new album “You Love You” today. If their name sounds familiar but can’t quite place them, I’ll give you a little hint. The band opened for Lady Gaga on numerous dates during her Monster Ball tour. In fact, they’ll be resuming their opening slot when Gaga returns for the North American leg of her tour.

Their new album was produced by Jack Joseph Puig (Beck, Green Day, The Rolling Stones) with Lady Gaga executive producing. The entire album is being streamed in its entirety on their MySpace page. Definitely check it out. You never know, it could be the next “big” thing on your iTunes playlist.

Semi Precious Weapons is fronted by lead singer Justin Tranter with Stevy Pyne on guitar, Dan Crean on drums and hottie Cole Whittle on bass. The band had a cameo for Lady Gaga’s Telephone music video. Tranter even has his own jewelry line, Fetty, which is sold in major retailers like Urban Outfitters, Barneys New York and Hot Topic.
