Homorazzi Chats With The Cataracs

In: Interviews, Music, Tyrell

It’s The Cataracs. You know you’ve heard that on all your favorite songs recently. That’s because this duo consisting of Cyranizzy & Campa are the IT producers to work with on your record right now. After dominating the charts and radio airplay with their production of Like A G6 by Far East Movement, these two scored an opening gig on Usher’s OMG Tour with ultra hottie DEV.

Backstage at BLVD 22 in Vancouver, I got an exclusive and rare sit down with the pair to ask them about what’s going on in their world. Their production is everywhere but their own music is totally great! A while back, I wrote about how I was Hooked On The Cataracs and if you listen to their music, you’ll understand why. The beat is infectious, the lyrics are fresh and the guys are kinda hot.

Chatting with the boys was a ton of fun but when they took to the stage later in the evening, they totally shut it down. Performing some of their best tracks, they even did a rendition of a song they produced for the New Boyz titled Back Seat. These boys from Cali are definitely going to be the ones to watch. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for their own album due out sometime in October.

American Idol 10 : Top 7 Eliminations

In: Donovan, TV Shows

Hey ya’ll. Sorry this is a little late today. Last night, a few of us had to go to an event where Homorazzi was being honored for helping out the charitable organization, YouthCo Aids Society, so I wasn’t able to watch the episode til this morning. To boot, it was Redd’s going away party and the first night out in Vancouver for me in a month. It was awesome seeing friends I haven’t seen in weeks. To say, I had a good time would be an understatement. Thankfully, Good Friday is a holiday up here. Now, onto to American Idol.

Last night’s time fillers were Katy Perry, Kanye West and David Cook. While, I like all three, I’m sooooooo glad we were on hand last week to watch Rihanna and Kelly Clarkson live instead. Having seen the results show in person, I have a whole new appreciation for the show and more importantly the audience. I know what those poor saps in the rafters went through. Neither of last night’s performance was great, but I do appreciate Katy going all extraterrestrial on us. That pin-up schtick is so tired. Also, was it wrong that I wanted Kanye’s fur vest. I’d risk the chance of PETA supporters throwing red paint on me to wear that hot little number.

On Saturday, I teased you with pictures and a video that Katy Perry had released to promote the release of her video for E.T.. This Max Martin, Dr. Luke and Ammo produced song is the third promo single of her album Teenage Dream. However, for the video and full release of the single, Katy added Kanye West to the mix and in all honesty, I’m not to sure why. I liked the song without him before and his verses don’t add anything to the song. In fact, they don’t really fit.

The video despite its major use of effects, green screen and computer generation is pretty basic. We begin with Kanye spinning around in a zero gravity while an alien floats through space. That alien suddenly turns into Katy and we watch her float through the stars in some pretty impressive costuming and make up. Once she hits a planet, she makes eyes with a robot and kisses it to turn into a skinny man, painted white and naked. Katy removes her dress and we see that she actually has the legs of a deer. WHAT?!

Check out the “E.T.” video here.

Get ready, because the alien formally known as Katy Perry will land with her new music video for E.T. on March 31st. As you can see from the picture, this video is going to be a trip (and I actually can’t wait). I have had the Teenage Dream album since its release last year and E.T. was one of my favorite tracks. I am kind of sick of it now, but with the creation of this video came something exciting; a new version of the track featuring Kanye West.

In more of the pictures you’ll see after the jump, Katy looks like a drag queen on steroids from another planet, but still looks absolutely stunning. MTV is planning a full Katy Perry Day extravaganza in support of the launch of the new video. This will include Katy Perry video blocks and an interview on The Seven. The official TV broadcast premiere will be at 7:53pm EST but you’ll be able to catch the video on MTV.com and NewNowNext.com at 12 noon. Exciting!

All of the Lights is the fourth single from Kanye West’s latest album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. Kanye produced the track for himself and it features many an artist contributing to the backing vocals including Elton John, Fergie, Alicia Keys, The-Dream, John Legend, Elly Jackson, and Kid Cudi. However, West chose to solely feature Rihanna as the artist accompanying him on the single. The song didn’t crack Top 10 on the charts however many critics praised the song for its dramatic theme and precise and detailed production which is shown in how the backing vocals is layered. One of Kanye’s producing partners explained it to MTV.

“He got me to layer up all these vocals with other people, and he just basically wanted to use his favorite vocalists from around the world to create this really unique vocal texture on his record, but it’s not the kind of thing where you can pick it out”.

The video was filmed in January with Hype Williams at the helm. It features a lot of word graphics classic to Hype’s style with strobe and colored clips of Rihanna, Kid Cudi and Kanye in reference to Gasper Noé’s 2009 film Enter The Void.

Billboard Ventures Into Uncharted Territory

In: Music, Tyrell

These days, the music industry is ultra-competitive. If you’re a new artist, the chance of you breaking onto the Billboard charts above the Gaga’s, the Katy’s and the Kanye’s seems nearly impossible. However, the popularity of independent, internet sensation living room and garage bands is growing daily. So, Billboard decided they should jump on the bandwagon.

Billboard has announced that they are adding a new ranking chart titled Uncharted. The purpose of this chart is to recognize and develop artists who don’t have the volume in record sales or radio airplay to bring them regular chart success. However, they will use such outlets as YouTube views, Twitter tweets and re-tweets, as well as MySpace music page listens.

Uncharted launched on Billboard yesterday and the first #1 artist is hip hopper Traphik from Long Beach, California who is famous on YouTube for his humorous rhymes in his raps. DJ BL3ND is also on the chart with their electro house music with one of their songs being viewed on YouTube well over 22 million times.

Last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live, special guest Josh Groban took the chance to remind America that he is still around. He wasn’t promoting a new album of original music however, but a collection of quips from one of Twitter’s most adored… Kanye West. Yes, Josh Groban took some of Kanye’s best 140 character ramblings and turned them into little jingles for our hearing pleasure and I’ve got to say, the songs are just as hilarious as the tweets themselves.

The faux-commercial is pretty convincing. Its really too bad that this little LP isn’t available for sale. Not like it would have any practical use on anyone’s iPod’s or playlists, but just for comical relief. Some of the golden tweets include: “Do you know where to find marble conference tables? I’m looking to have a conference… not until I get the table though.” and “Fur pillows are hard to actually sleep on.” Classic. And they only get more ridiculous from here.

Kanye and Jay-Z To Release Joint Effort This Week

In: Music, Tyrell

While celebrating at Jay-Z’s New Year’s Eve bash in Vegas, Kanye West made a huge announcement to the crowd. Back in August, Kanye teased us on Twitter when he announced that the duo would be releasing a mini-album project together and that the first single would be the now released, Monster. The EP would be called Watch The Throne.

He later announced that the EP would turn into a full length album and shortly after this, headed to England to begin work on the project with Jay-Z. Kanye’s description of the album? He says, “[its] going to be very dark and sexy, like couture hip-hop.” If there is anyone who could pull this off, it would be these two. Another single surface on the internet in November titled That’s My B**ch and it features Elly Jackson from La Roux and is said to be another single from the EP.
