Billboard Ventures Into Uncharted Territory

In: Music, Tyrell

These days, the music industry is ultra-competitive. If you’re a new artist, the chance of you breaking onto the Billboard charts above the Gaga’s, the Katy’s and the Kanye’s seems nearly impossible. However, the popularity of independent, internet sensation living room and garage bands is growing daily. So, Billboard decided they should jump on the bandwagon.

Billboard has announced that they are adding a new ranking chart titled Uncharted. The purpose of this chart is to recognize and develop artists who don’t have the volume in record sales or radio airplay to bring them regular chart success. However, they will use such outlets as YouTube views, Twitter tweets and re-tweets, as well as MySpace music page listens.

Uncharted launched on Billboard yesterday and the first #1 artist is hip hopper Traphik from Long Beach, California who is famous on YouTube for his humorous rhymes in his raps. DJ BL3ND is also on the chart with their electro house music with one of their songs being viewed on YouTube well over 22 million times.

Last night on Jimmy Kimmel Live, special guest Josh Groban took the chance to remind America that he is still around. He wasn’t promoting a new album of original music however, but a collection of quips from one of Twitter’s most adored… Kanye West. Yes, Josh Groban took some of Kanye’s best 140 character ramblings and turned them into little jingles for our hearing pleasure and I’ve got to say, the songs are just as hilarious as the tweets themselves.

The faux-commercial is pretty convincing. Its really too bad that this little LP isn’t available for sale. Not like it would have any practical use on anyone’s iPod’s or playlists, but just for comical relief. Some of the golden tweets include: “Do you know where to find marble conference tables? I’m looking to have a conference… not until I get the table though.” and “Fur pillows are hard to actually sleep on.” Classic. And they only get more ridiculous from here.

Kanye and Jay-Z To Release Joint Effort This Week

In: Music, Tyrell

While celebrating at Jay-Z’s New Year’s Eve bash in Vegas, Kanye West made a huge announcement to the crowd. Back in August, Kanye teased us on Twitter when he announced that the duo would be releasing a mini-album project together and that the first single would be the now released, Monster. The EP would be called Watch The Throne.

He later announced that the EP would turn into a full length album and shortly after this, headed to England to begin work on the project with Jay-Z. Kanye’s description of the album? He says, “[its] going to be very dark and sexy, like couture hip-hop.” If there is anyone who could pull this off, it would be these two. Another single surface on the internet in November titled That’s My B**ch and it features Elly Jackson from La Roux and is said to be another single from the EP.

Rolling Stone Picks Their Top Songs & Albums of 2010

In: Donovan, Music

We’re still recovering from our NYE celebrations, so we decided to take today off. In lieu of new articles, we decided to repost some of our favorite 2010 Year End List-themed posts from this year. HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE.

Spin Magazine and MySpace already named their best music picks of 2010, and now it’s Rolling Stone Magazine’s turn. Kanye West’s latest opus has once again soared past the competition and claimed the top spot. His “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” took the No. 1 spot on Spin and the runner-up slot on MySpace’s list. Looks like someone is on a roll.

Rolling Stone’s list includes several of the same artists found on Spin’s, but there are a couple of WTF selections. Which ones you ask? I love me some Elton John, but seriously… his latest CD is at No. 3? If anyone’s listened to it, please enlighten me on what I missed out this year. The other selection that had my head scratching was Robert Plant. Maybe my musical tastes aren’t as refined, slash ancient as the editors of Rolling Stone.

Here are Rolling Stone’s picks for the crème de la crème of 2010.

  • 10. LCD Soundsystem – This Is Happening
  • ?9. Eminem – Recovery
  • 8. Robert Plant – Band Of Joy
  • 7. Drake – Thank Me Later
  • 6. Vampire Weekend – Contra
  • 5. Jamey Johnson – The Guitar Song
  • 4. Arcade Fire – The Suburbs
  • 3. Elton John and Leon Russell – The Union
  • 2. The Black Keys – Brothers
  • 1. Kanye West – My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy

What did you think of the list? Personally, I like Spin’s list much better. How many of the Top 10 have you checked out or own?

Ballerinas Are SO The New Vampires

In: Fashion, Nic, The Arts

It’s been a LONG TIME coming that those blood sucking children of the undead climbed off the trendy train. I’m not really anything other than neutral that this trend became popular quite honestly. But really, who hasn’t watched True Blood and loved it, (just the raunchiest show on television), and what prepubescent teen, or Tommy D, hasn’t done the Beatles cry over Twilight (my warm soft spot for those films ends at Lautner). After only a few examples, we can see that the pop culture phenomena that IS vampires, post Anne Rice, has been riding high the last couple of years. But WE ARE ON THE BRINK OF SOMETHING NEW!

The dark side of Ballet has taken over, and we can thank a few seemingly unrelated groups for the next craze. Anyone who has not seen Black Swan SHOULD. It’s an incredibly suspenseful, demented, and claustrophobic film that I can see someone (PORTMAN PORTMAN PORTMAN) thanking the Academy for very soon. But something caught my eye and hit a nerve (mixed analogies?) when I first saw the trailer for it. I thought it seemed like a slightly underplayed theme that had serious nuclear potential, and then I noticed I wasn’t the only one who thought so. The tutu is IN.

Spin Magazine Names Best 40 Albums of 2010

In: Donovan, Music

Spin Magazine just ranked their Top 40 albums of 2010. Even though the magazine has a tendency to skew more alternative-rock, the list includes several hip-hop and pop acts. In fact, the top spot goes to Kanye West’s “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy“. Earlier this week, West’s opus also claimed the No. 2 spot on MySpace’s year end list. In an earlier album review, Spin called the album:

“a ballsy, self-aware admonition that luxuriates in its grandiose reveal as an Assholes Anonymous orgy that gets nowhere close to serenity.”

Homorazzi.com favorite Robyn also made the list. Surprisingly it was only her Body Talk Pt. 1 CD that made the cut. You would’ve thought Spin would’ve included all three parts of her amazing trilogy on the list. Unfortunately for the Swedish singer, she also didn’t receive a lot of love during this year’s Grammy nomination announcement. She received only one nod for “Dancing On My Own“. Check out what other albums made Spin Magazine’s cut below.

Rihanna Sizzles In Bold “Interview” Pics

In: Donovan, Fashion, Music

For Interview Magazine’s December/January issue, a short red-haired Rihanna works it out for fashion photographer Mikael Jansson. Rihanna oozes sex appeal from a bygone decade. I’m thinking the 70s, given the styling choices. Those are some sexy shades she’s sporting on the cover. When I first saw her cover for the holiday issue of Marie Claire I loved it. But in light of these new pics, they seem rather boring when compared to Interview’s fashion editorial.

The Bajan beauty doesn’t only pose in fabulous couture for the issue, but she’s also interviewed by her labelmate and friend, Kanye West. Boy, did the record label score in killing two birds with one stone with this promotional effort. The piece Kanye did for Interview Magazine is titled “The Colorful Art of Being Rihanna“. As a writer/rapper/producer he is exceptional, as an interviewer… not so much. He doesn’t really ask anything profound and sticks to a color-by-numbers interviewing line of questioning. Given they are friends, I would’ve expected something a bit juicier. Perhaps Rihanna’s people put some really tight restrictions on Interview and Kanye before the interview.

Too bad Jessica’s name didn’t start with a silent “K” and then the answer would be obvious. Stumped yet? The five celebrities along with a multitude of stars and talent will be participating in Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. For 84 years, the annual event has entertained families on the festive holiday. This year, more than 3.5 million spectators are expected to line the streets of Manhattan with an additional 50 million viewers nationwide watching NBC’s telecast.

Previously announced stars joining the festivities this year include India Arie, Big Time Rush, Betty Buckley, Ann Hampton Callaway, the casts of Broadway’s American Idiot, Elf, Memphis, Million Dollar Quartet, the Big Apple Circus, Miranda Cosgrove, Jimmy Fallon & The Roots, Gloriana, Michael Grimm, Arlo Guthrie, Eric Hutchinson, Juanes, Victoria Justice, Gladys Knight, Mannheim Steamroller, Miss USA 2010 Rima Fakih, Power Rangers Samurai, Joan and Melissa Rivers, and Crystal Shawanda.
