2016-grammy-winners

Heading into the 58th annual Grammy Awards, Kendrick Lamar led the pack with a whopping 11 nominations. Taylor Swift and The Weeknd were close behind with 7 nods apiece. Each of them walked away with some hardware with Lamar taking the lead again with five statues.

With regards to the big categories, the Grammys spread the love. Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ ubiquitous hit, “Uptown Funk” won Record of the Year while Album of the Year and Song of the Year went to Swift and Ed Sheeran respectively. It’s worth nothing, Taylor is the first woman to win Album of the Year twice.

The Best New Artist statue went to Meghan Trainor. Didn’t she already win a Grammy last year? How is she still a ‘new artist?’ It’s also worth mentioning, Justin Bieber walked away with his first Grammy statue for his “Where Are U Now?” collaboration with Diplo and Skrillex.

For the most part, the acceptance speeches weren’t anything too memorable with exception to Taylor. Even though her rep previously issued a statement regarding Kanye West’s controversial lyrics, Swift has kept mum… until now.

“As the first woman to win album of the year twice, I want to say to all the young women out there, there are going to be people along the way who will try to undermine your success or who will try to take credit for your accomplishments or your fame.” – Swift

Though she doesn’t specifically mention West’s name or “Famous,” it’s pretty clear her speech was a less-than-veiled response to the rapper. Watch her speech in full below, along with the complete winners list for the 2016 Grammys.

After spending three weeks on top, “Sorry” relinquishes its hold on the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100. No need to shed a tear for Justin Bieber though, his other single, “Love Yourself,” rises to the pole position.

The Ed Sheeran-penned ballad rises from 2-1. This not only marks the Bieb’s third chart-topper from his Purpose album, but third one of his career.

The 21-year-old Canadian singer is only the 12th act to replace himself at No. 1. The Weeknd recently achieved the same feat when “The Hills” replaced “Can’t Feel My Face.” Other artists part of this exclusive club include Taylor Swift, Boyz II Men, Usher, Ja Rule, the Beatles and Nelly to name a few.

Clearly the powers-that-be over at corporate were happy with the results of their last campaign. Calvin Klein has once again tapped Justin Bieber to front their new initiative. The 21-year-old singer flaunts (literally) his assets in the global ad campaign photographed by Tyrone Lebon.

The underwear division also released a video featuring the likes of FKA Twigs, Fetty Wap, Kendrick Lamar, Kendall Jenner and more revealing what they ‘blank’ in their Calvins. Check out the clip below, along with another photo of the Biebs.

Justin Bieber Ends Adele’s Run On Billboard Hot 100

Both “Sorry” and “Hello” were released the same day in October. Adele’s power ballad immediately debuted at No. 1 and has never looked back. After ten weeks dominating the Billboard Hot 100, “Hello” finally relinquishes its grip on the No. 1 slot. No longer the bridesmaid, “Sorry” at long last, gets its chance to rule the chart.

Sorry” becomes the Bieb’s second Hot 100 chart-topper of his career, following “What Do You Mean.” His other single “Love Yourself” is sitting pretty at No. 3. It’s extremely likely that track will give him a Purpose hat trick.

I’m actually quite impressed his latest singles are doing so well without the help of music videos featuring him. Don’t get me wrong, I love the dance clips for both, extremely so, but find it interesting Bieber never shot a clip with him included.

Troye Sivan broke out in a big way this year with his debut album, Blue Neighbourhood. His coming-of-age video trilogy was heartbreaking visual opus. Adele, Adam Lambert and Sam Smith are just a few of his famous fans. The 20-year-old Aussie delivers once again with his latest recording.

Romantically speaking, Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber are no longer a couple. On the professional front though, they sound great together. At least their songs do. Sivan covers their respective singles, “Hands To Myself” and “Sorry,” for a sensational mashup.

Sivan recorded the medley for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Check it out below. And if you haven’t checked out his original material, definitely do. He’s a revelation.

Jordan Roseman aka DJ Earworm released his first original track weeks ago, but today he returned to his bread and butter. His annual United State of Pop video mashup, highlighting the top hits of the year, is hands down my favorite. Typically, he chooses the top 25 tracks based off the Billboard charts. This year, he went a step further and mashed up the 50 biggest hits.

The five-minute masterpiece titled “50 Shades of Pop” is “more eclectic mix than it was five years ago,” Earworm explains to Billboard about the diversity of tunes that blew up the charts this year. With that being said, Taylor Swift has a whopping four tracks in the mix. Close behind is The Weekend with three. Other artists with multiple offerings are Rihanna, Justin Bieber, Fetty Wap, Meghan Trainor and Ed Sheeran.

He even made room for Adele’s massive late 2015 entry, “Hello.” If you hated this year’s song of the summer, fear not, OMI’s “Cheerleader” is only shown/heard briefly. Check out this year’s offering below. It’s his best one in recent memory.

zoolander-trailer-record

Despite almost 15 years passing since Zoolander first hit theaters, interest in the film is still quite high. Paramount Pictures and Ben Stiller must be breathing a sigh of relief. The studio announced the Zoolander 2 trailer has broken the record to become the most successful comedy trailer launch of all time. Clearly, deciding to finally film a sequel was a good idea.

Reportedly, the first trailer generated a ridiculously good 52.2 million views in its first week of release. The previous record was held by another highly-anticipated sequel, Dumb and Dumber 2 which raked in 49 million views.

No doubt the controversy surrounding Benedict Cumberbatch’s character helped Zoolander 2. His androgynous character was criticized as “the modern equivalent of using blackface to represent a minority,” stated Sarah Rose who started a petition to boycott the film which so far has more than 14,000 signatures.

Zoolander 2 opens nationwide on Feb. 12, 2016. Check out the trailer below if you haven’t already seen it.

justin-bieber-purpose-sales

Both Justin Bieber and One Direction were in full promotional mode all last week for their respective new albums. After the dust settled, the Canadian singer beat out the boys from the UK. Purpose earned 649,000 equivalent album units (522,000 in pure album sales) during its first week. Meanwhile, 1D moved 459,000 units, 402,000 in pure album sales.

Not only his Purpose, the Bieb’s sixth No. 1 album, but it also represents his largest sales week ever. His previous best was Believe which sold 374,000 during its first week in 2012. Sadly though for Justin, he’ll only have a one-week reign. Adele is set to crush Billboard records when her numbers are tallied next week.

Speaking of records, Justin achieved a big one over on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. Find out below.
