Billboard Highlights The 10 Biggest Songs Of 2014

In: Donovan, Music

Billboard magazine revealed their year end lists for their numerous charts this week. Pharrell Williams’ “Happy” gets the honor of being named the most popular song of 2014 by the publication. It tops their prestigious Hot 100 year end list.

Joining him in the top tier are Katy Perry, Iggy Azalea, OneRepublic, Sam Smith, Taylor Swift, John Legend and Ariana Grande. Probably the most shocking entry is that of Magic!. No one could’ve ever predicted a reggae jam from a white Canadian group would’ve made such an impact. Sadly, my boy Pitbull just missed the list at No. 11 with his anthem, “Timber.”

Check out the magazine’s Top 10 video countdown below which gives some fun facts about each track to make the cut. Be sure to weigh in afterward if you think Pharrell’s “Happy” deserves the crown.

One of the things I look most forward to at this time of year is DJ Earworm’s annual music video, mashing up the calendar year’s 25 biggest Billboard hits. With the decline of EDM on the Hot 100 chart, Earworm (real name: Jordan Roseman) tells Billboard he went with a more mellower approach.

“The thing that has been most notable in the past two or three years is the decline of EDM,” says Earworm of the 25 songs he selected for this year’s song. “The ‘United State of Pop’ became this dance track from ’09 to ’12, and then starting last year, there just wasn’t enough in that genre to fully support it, so I went down-tempo. And this year, ‘Timber,’ which was popular in January, is the only popular dance track I’m dealing with. It’s definitely down-tempo, so you have to decide, how is this going to go? How am I going to maintain the energy levels while being true to the sound of the year?”

It truly is remarkable how he weaves ballads like Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me” and John Legend’s “All Of Me” with hip-hop anthems like Jason Derulo’s “Talk Dirty” and Iggy Azalea’s “Black Widow,” along with dance tracks DJ Snake’s “Turn Down For What” and Pitbull’s “Timber.” Check out the DJ/Producer’s latest masterpiece below, along with a list of which tracks made the cut.

What a difference a year makes. Last year, Jordin Sparks and Jason DeRulo were on cloud nine telling anyone who would listen how much in love they were. Their undying love for each other was immortalized on a couple of lovey dovey songs. Their broken engagement has now inspired Sparks to diss her former fiance on a new track.

“Remember I deleted all my other guys’ numbers out my phone for ya? / Remember when you broke your neck and I had to wash your back for ya? You probably don’t remember half of the sh*t that I did for ya,” the American Idol winner sassily sings on “How Bout You“- a remix of Drake’s song of the same name. Jordin goes into further detail about the deterioration of their relationship on the not-so-flattering song.

“How Bout You” is off Sparks’ mixtape, appropriately titled #ByeFelicia. Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. I guess we now know what she’s thankful for this Thanksgiving. Initially, both parties said their breakup was amicable. I wonder what happened recently to set her off. Hear what else she has to sing about Derulo below. It begins at the 0:35 mark.

YouTube recently compiled the most-played music videos for the first half of 2014. Not surprisingly with the entire planet having World Cup fever, a couple official anthems by Pitbull and Shakira for the sporting event cracked the Top 10. The “Hips Don’t Lie” singer also snatched a second spot thanks to her collaboration “Can’t Remember To Forget You” with Rihanna.

Frozen‘s “Let It Go” sing-a-long version, Chainsmokers viral “#SELFIE” and Iggy Azalea also made the cut. The honor for most-played video though goes to Katy Perry. Her “Dark Horse” visual has amassed a staggering 485 million plays. Check out the Top 10 below.

DJ Earworm is arguably one of the best, if not best, mashup artist around. I first stumbled upon him years ago with one of his year-end mashups incorporating the year’s Top 25 hits. Luckily for us, he graces us with random creations throughout the year.

His latest masterpiece titled “Mash Up For What?” incorporates inescapable smashes by Iggy Azalea, Jason Derulo, Pharrell Williams, Ariana Grande and DJ Snake. Give his latest a listen below. It’s one of his better ones for sure.

Listen To Jason Derulo’s New Album In Its Entirety

In: Donovan, Music

Jason Derulo drops his new album, Talk Dirty, today. Technically, it’s just a reissue of his last offering Tattoos- a five-track EP. Released seven months after the original, Derulo collaborated with producers including Timbaland and The Cataracs to create brand new material to be released specifically for the U.S. version of the album.

Naturally his Top 10 hit, “Talk Dirty,” is included. I really didn’t want to like the 2 Chainz-assisted single but it grew on me massively. I’m not alone. It’s practically inescapable, playing on radio, television shows, sports arenas and even at a financial institution I did some banking recently. After quickly checking out Talk Dirty, I have a feeling some of his other tracks will do the same. Give his entire album a listen below.

Jordin Sparks & Jason Derulo Have Vertigo On New Duet

In: Donovan, Music

Both Jordin Sparks and Jason Derulo feature duets with each other on their upcoming albums. While the American Idol Season 6 winner teased “Before It Breaks” weeks ago, it’s Derulo’s Tattoos duet that’s surfaced in full first. It’s clear Jason is smitten with Jordin. His current official single “Marry Me” is about how he imagines proposing to his girlfriend in the future. Now, he’s making beautiful music with her. The two definitely have chemistry in and out of the recording studio.

Vertigo” isn’t what you’d expect from Jason’s typical dance-oriented fare. Instead, it’s on the simpler side with very minimal production. Even though I’m sometimes dead inside, I’m a sucker for slow-tempo duets. So this one is right up my alley. Give it a listen below.

How romantic would it be to have someone write a song about you? And not in a Taylor Swift bitter ex-girlfriend kind of way, because that would suck. Rather, have one telling the world just how fantastic you are. Jordin Sparks is lucky to have not only have someone so in love with her, but also have a guy who’s a talented songwriter.

Even though Jason Derulo and Sparks aren’t engaged (yet), the R&B singer debuted a new track where he declares his love to the woman he loves and how he imagines his wedding proposal will be with the American Idol Season 6 winner. “We’ll forever be in love, so there ain’t no need to rush,” Derulo tells his lady. “But one day I wont be able to ask you loud enough. I’ll say, ‘Will you marry me?’” “Marry Me” is the second cut from his upcoming effort, Tattoos. Give the romantic track a listen below.
