Well it’s here. After months of competition, a couple weeks of reruns and recaps, endless drama and some of the best/worst drag I’ve seen on tv we have a winner for the 5th season of RuPaul’s Drag Race. Before we get to the winner let’s recap a bit or the reunion shall we?
As is tradition we have a reunion episode where we get one last moment to see our Season 5 queens on the tube before they disappear into reality TV history (except for Alyssa, who is getting her own spinoff ALLEGEDLY!). I have to tell you I actually completely forgot that half of those queens were even on the show. But I guess that’s what happens when you get eliminated at the beginning.
RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 5 comes to a close tonight. Who will take it all? Alaska, Jinkx Monsoon or Roxxy Andrews? Before RuPaul crowns “America’s Next Drag Superstar” and “Miss Congeniality,” all fourteen queens sit down to rehash all the drama served throughout the season. And there was plenty of it.
With regards to any reality show, it’s all about the reunion shows. After seeing all the confessionals, I’m sure all the queens will have plenty to say. The reunion special where the winner was announced taped on May 1. All the Season 5 contestants along with fan favorites from previous years donned their fiercest outfits on the red carpet. I personally liked Detox’s look the best. I literally had to do a double take when I saw her monochromatic makeup. I thought it was due to some black and white Photoshop magic. Alas it was all her. Check out all the looks below from this season’s crop and cast your vote on who werked it out the best.
The jolly miss Jade Jolie.
Honestly she was SUCH a treat to speak with this morning, I even got word from Patrick that it was the easiest most clear interview to edit haha!
Jade took time out this morning to talk about her experience on the show, as we know she was safe pretty much the entire time except obviously this last episode. WE talked about her friendship with Coco, the little drama with Alyssa and all the rainbows and glitter in the UNIVERSE!
I mean Amen.
My review of RuPaul’s Drag Race this week is going to be a bit brisk because I just came back from Emerald City Comic Con and I am WIPED (a nerd alert is coming this week about it). What did we learn in this week’s episode? Most drag queen’s can’t sing, Detox is 90% silicone & Coco Montrese wants to have her cake and eat it too!
This week’s mini challenge was make up in the dark which was hysterical. Detox won because her make-up is essentially paint by numbers flawless. So she got to choose the 3 teams for the singing challenge. She obviously chose Roxxxy and Alaska for her team, Ivy Jinkx and Jade Jolie were together and Coco and Alyssa were paired up. The main challenge was a “We are the world” style number called Can I get an Amen? There were challenged with writing a verse, and coming out with an 80′s style look for the live music video.
Racers, we need to take a moment. There was something so unbelievable shocking that happened on tonight’s episode that I was almost offended. For a competition full of the best drag queens in the country to not know who Little Edie was is unforgivable. A little history lesson before we start shall we?
Little Edie was the cousin of Jackie O. Her and her mother Big Edie lived in a mansion called Grey Gardens and were very recluse. They became GAY ICONS and CULT ICONS after their documentary Grey Gardens was released. Jackie O even took notice of this and helped them with the mansion because of the controversial way they lived. If you haven’t seen Grey Gardens its a MUST and I highly recommend that you watch it this week. For Jinkx Monsoon to do Little Edie PERFECTLY (and I mean perfectly, the accent, the little quips, the american flag, the pate, the headdress EVERYTHING was flawless) was absolutely beyond. It was on another level and will for me be the best Snatch Game contestant. She shined even more because this season’s Snatch Game was sub par. Did everyone just phone it in this challenge? I thought these queens were pros, but there was absolutely no excuse for what we saw on the show tonight. Now it’s time to talk about what happened tonight.
In the famous words of Drag Race All Star Jujubee I want to start off this review by saying MEEEOW! RuPaul was not havin it tonight hunty! Did you see it? Did you SEE the (not so) shocking double elimination? I have to be honest I totally saw it come because the LSFYL was kind of lamesauce. Who were the bottom two? Well before we get to that let’s spill the T on tonight’s episode or RuPaul’s Drag Race.
I’m really loving the post elimination work room start they are doing this season, it’s really good. After Monica’s elimination everyone was all ears about Vivienne who right away was making some excuses about being in a group with too many loud queens. All T, All Shade, if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen girl. She was mainly going after Roxxxy Andrews who I have to say is turning out to be the one to beat this season.
It’s so funny how one week someone can be on top, and the next week they can just drive me crazy again. Last week, I mentioned how amazing Coco Montrese was, and this week she’s just a big whiney baby wahh wahh Alyssa is mad at me. Honestly she needs to get over it, but I guess it’s keeping us all talking about her which equals screen time. Hmmmm….
After Serena’s elimination last week our girls all came back into the workroom and we FINALLY started to get some history with Alyssa and Coco. Of course it had something to do with a pageant, in fact it was Coco who was Alyssa’s first alternate. So after Alyssa got dethroned, Coco got the crown. Drama? Not really -it’s kind of the rules, but you know queens and a crown right?
This week’s mini challenge was great, it was a Junior Drag pageant. The girls had to team up and make up a dummy to look like a junior drag queen. The winning team was Lil Pound Cake done up by Lineysha and Alaska. It was the best one for sure no complaints there. As the winners, they were made captains of two teams, where they had to create a children’s show. I’m kind of over the group challenges and I really want to see the bitches shine on their own, but I digress.
I need to preface this by saying a few things. When I went to interview the producers of Drag Race a month ago, they told me that this was the best season of Drag Race. I have to say that already in Episode 2, this season SLAYS! The queens are SO good (except for Serena) and the challenges are already awesome. Tonight’s main challenge was FIERCE and so funny. Also, Miss COCO MONTRESE TURNED ME OUT this episode. I know I put her in my bottom girls last week and while I still don’t think she can win, she was giving me LIFE this week. She is SO funny and her shade is perfection. Ok, let’s get to it.
The episode started off completely differently this week. The first scene was when the queens walked back into the workroom after elimination. It was such a refreshing way to start the show. We got to see their feelings immediately after the elimination. So great. Serena blah blah was safe and people were not having it, especially Detox who was already missing Penny. When they got back the next day it was time for a mini challenge, a lip sync challenge. They had to lip sync one of RuPaul’s songs behind a giant RuPaul face with only their lips showing. I KNEW Detox would be one of the winners her lip sync is always perfect. The other winners were Ivy Winters and Serena blah blah. Those three became captains and had to choose teams to compete in the lip sync main challenge: Recreating a famous scene from Untucked from the past seasons. Genius.
