After NBC scored boffo ratings with its live production of The Sound of Music, FOX announced it was going to tackle a classic musical as well. Wisely, they picked the beloved Grease. Based on brand recognition alone, the network should generate decent ratings. Something NBC knows all to well after picking the not-so-popular Peter Pan for its second live production.

FOX recently released the first two names participating in Grease. While no one can ever fully live up to Olivia Newton-John’s performance in the film, Julianne Hough is a pretty decent choice to play Sandy. She can dance, has that wholesome girl-next-door quality and can carry a tune. Find out who’s taking on Rizzo below.

“Grease is one of the movies that made me want to be an entertainer, and I have literally been waiting my whole life to play Sandy,” Julianne shared in a statement. “My siblings and I watched it and played it out over and over when we were kids. This is my dream role and performing it live on television will be one of the most thrilling opportunities I’ve had in my career so far.”

Karmin Kinda Butchers Grease Classic For Twizzlers

In: Donovan, Music

Even though Karmin has failed to match the success of “Brokenhearted” with their followups, I’ve remained a fan. I love me some Nick Noonan ;) However, their latest is somewhat of a tragic mess.

On paper, the real-life couple tackling the classic duet “Summer Nights” from Grease sounds like a great idea. Sadly, it fails on every level in my opinion. The arrangement is just awful. Why they and their team chose to sell out for a Twizzlers commercial is a little puzzling. Give it a listen below and weigh in below.

FOX Announces Live Grease Production

In: Donovan, TV Shows

FOX is taking a page out of NBC’s playbook and airing its very own live production of a beloved musical. The network announced its staging a live three-hour version of the Broadway high-school classic, Grease, sometime next year.

“From Broadway to film, and across generations, Grease is one of the most beloved musical stories ever told – and we can’t wait to bring it to our air in a spectacular live event,” said Shana C. Waterman, senior VP of event series for Fox. “Its iconic characters and addictive songs make it the perfect fit for Fox, and we’re going to give it the kind of star power and production quality to make every Sandy, Danny, Rizzo and Kenickie out there want to get up and sing along.”

While some might argue FOX is simply riding the coattails of NBC who successfully launched (despite Carrie Underwood’s wooden acting) a live version of Sound of Music last year. After all, the special pulled in over 22 million viewers. To be fair, FOX was the network who brought the musical genre back to television with Glee.

Olivia Newton-John Announces Las Vegas Residency

In: Donovan, Music

Thanks to the staying power and popularity of Grease, everyone knows Olivia Newton-John no matter how old they are. But for those who don’t, she was the most successful Aussie pop export until Kylie Minogue burst onto the scene. If you’re a huge fan like myself, you’ll appreciate this bit of news.

Following in Celine Dion, Shania Twain and Britney Spears’ footsteps, the youthful 65-year-old is heading to Las Vegas for her very own residency. She announced a 45-date engagement at the legendary Flamingo Casino. Olivia will take over the showroom currently occupied by Donny and Marie Osmond. Aptly titled “Summer Nights,” her show will run from April 8 until the end of the Summer. Tickets go on sale on February 7.

A couple of years ago, I attended her concert and it was a blast. She’s a great performer and sang all my favorite hits. At one point, I felt like I was watching a live version of Grease, given that she sang so many from the hit musical. I highly recommend checking her out if you’re ever in the Las Vegas area and love the movie. Check out my favorite tracks from Olivia below in no particular order.

Cute Swedish Marines Get ‘Greased’

In: Donovan, Random Reads, Videos

Everyone loves Grease. Based on this video, it’s clear that these Swedish Marines really, really, really love the classic musical. During some downtime while stationed in Afghanistan, Sweden’s military finest filmed an impressive recreation of John Travolta’s “Greased Lightning” number. It truly is pretty remarkable. The guy playing Danny Zuko with the sexy 70s pornstache is beyond adorable. Check out the parody below.

The infamous Grease duo, Olivia Newton-John & John Travolta have reunited to release a Christmas album together titled, This Christmas and today they’ve just released the music video for one of the songs: “I Think You Might Like It.”

In the video, Travolta flies his plane home for Christmas where he is reunited with Olivia Newton-John, who drove to meet him in a convertible packed with presents. The two do a little line dancing throughout the video in black outfits, which feels like an homage to the outfits they wore in final scenes in Grease. Aside from John & Olivia, we also see clips of other families reuniting for the holidays, including some soldiers returning home as well.

In the final clip of the video, the two drive off in the convertible, with one last wave from Olivia. This is of course an homage to the final scene in Grease when Danny & Sandy drive off in the flying car.

Oh, along with the release of the music video, John and Oliva sat down with Ellen DeGeneres on her show today. Enjoy the cute (and cheesy) Christmas music video, as well as their segment on Ellen below.

Glee has a Grease‘-themed episode in store for viewers coming up on Thursday, November 15. The episode will feature nine songs from the hit musical/movie, including “Greased Lightening” sang by the Glee cast which was just released today as a preview.

In “Greased Lightening,” it’s a mixture of old and new Glee stars with Cory Monteith, Harry Shum Jr., Kevin McHale, and Chord Overstreet singing with Samuel Larsen, Jacob Artist, and The Glee Project winner Blake Jenner.

Listen to the song below and check out the rest of the songs the Glee will be covering from Grease. Donovan, Brian and myself watch Olivia Newton John perform live earlier this summer and she sang a handful of songs from the movie. I’m certain she’ll be excited to see this episode, as will John Travolta.

This upcoming Tuesday, “Glee” finally returns from its Winter break and I personally can’t wait. Not only do we get to see Chord Overstreet shirtless once again, but this time he’ll be all wet and shiny from swimming in the pool. To boot, “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” star Nene Leakes makes her much-anticipated debut as the synchronized swimming coach.

A few weeks ago, Tyrell gave the first listen to McKinley High’s cover of the iconic “Grease” classic “Summer Nights“. Now, we have the entire playlist from the episode and it’s a great one. The episode covers a wide array of songs ranging from Roberta Flack’s signature ballad “The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face” to Rihanna’s huge hit “We Found Love“.

It wouldn’t be “Glee” if there wasn’t a mashup thrown in the mix. This time around Maroon 5′s “Moves Like Jagger” is mixed with The Rolling Stones “Jumpin’ Jack Flash“. Whoever came up with this Mick Jagger-inspired mashup deserves mad props. Absolutely brilliant. As good as that mashup is, my favorite is Lea Michele’s rendition of David Guetta and Usher’s “Without You“. I love how she swapped out the club beats for an orchestral arrangement. It’s fantastically epic.
