Golden Globes Hit 10-Year Ratings High

In: Donovan, Movies, TV Shows
2014-golden-globes-ratings-opening-monologue

Bringing back Tina Fey and Amy Poehler proved a wise decision for NBC. The lethal comedic combo delivered a 10-year high in viewers, with 20.9 million, up from 19.7 million last year. With regards to the coveted 18-49 demo, it scored a 6.5 rating, up a tenth of a point from 2013 and its best mark since 2007.

Admittedly, I was a little worried Fey and Poehler wouldn’t be able to capture lightning in a bottle again, but they eased my concerns immediately with their hilarious opening monologue. That George Clooney Gravity dig was my favorite of the night. Speaking of digs, after Poehler won, Tina commented that there was a special place in hell for her co-host. Clearly that was directed at Taylor Swift. The country-pop singer took offense to a joke at last year’s Globes and took aim at Tina and Amy in a Vanity Fair interview.

Other memorable moments (good or bad) include Jacqueline Bisset’s slow-moving walk to the stage and following babbling speech, Poehler as Mr. Golden Globe, Emma Thompson barefoot and drinking on stage, all the Julia Louis-Dreyfus audience moments, and speeches by Jennifer Lawrence, Amy Adams and Matthew McConaughey. Rewatch the hilarious opening monologue and all the winners below.

71st-golden-globes-nominations

It’s no surprise that 12 Years a Slave and American Hustle led the way with seven nominations each when the 71st annual Golden Globes nominations were announced this morning. Both have done well with all the critics awards leading up to today’s announcement, especially the former. The latter’s cast were showered with praises, earning a nod in every acting comedy category.

What was surprising, if not shocking, was one notable snub. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association are notorious star f**kers. They have a long history of nominating substandard performances in hopes of filling up the ballroom with famous people. However this year, lesser known names made the cut while arguably one of the most famous, if not powerful, person got completely shunned. Oprah Winfrey, my dear… you don’t get a nod! You don’t get a nod! In fact, no one from the star-studded Lee Daniels’ The Butler, including the film itself was nominated. The film was not only a box office hit but a critical favorite as well.

The silver lining is that there is absolutely no crossover with the HFPA voters and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. However, it’s still nice to be nominated given the show is widely seen and offers a great opportunity for those in the race to do some hardcore publicity and campaigning. With regards to the HFPA, I’d still be worried if I was one of the 90-something GG voters. We all know how long Winfrey likes to hold a grudge. Just go ask David Letterman.

Check out all the nominations below. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will host the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014. I have high hopes they’ll deliver another winning performance.

2014-golden-globes-promo

During last night’s The Sound of Music Live!, NBC debuted the first promo for the 2014 Golden Globes. Unlike Carrie Underwood’s wooden acting, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are two of my favorite things. The comedic BFFs return for their second time hosting the funnest awards show of the year. Earlier this year, the duo signed on for two more hosting stints after their well-reviewed debut as Globes hosts.

In the clip, Amy is on piano duties while Tina attempts to give a preview of their opening number. Unfortunately, they’re off-key and can’t harmonize. While musically they never hit the right note, I have no doubt they will hit all the perfect comedic notes come Golden Globes night. The 71st annual Golden Globe Awards will air on NBC on January 12, 2014. This year’s Miss Golden Globe is Sosie Bacon- daughter of Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick. Watch the promo below.

Best decision by NBC in recent memory. The peacock network announced Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will return to host the 71st and 72nd annual Golden Globes. Truly amazing.

“We’re elated they wanted to host together again and that they committed for the next two years.” – A spokesperson for NBC said in a statement

After last year’s sensational performance, I couldn’t be anymore excited. Those ladies killed it. One person who’s probably not feeling this development is Taylor Swift. She didn’t appreciate being the butt of one of their jokes during last year’s telecast. Poehler’s rep jokingly tweeted, “Sorry @taylorswift13 but Amy & Tina will be back for the next two @goldenglobes.” I’m betting the “22″ singer stays clear from this year’s event ;)

Just in case you forgot how hilarious the 30 Rock and Parks & Recreation actress were on the 70th annual show, I’ve embedded their best moments below. The 2014 Golden Globes will be held in Los Angeles on Sunday, January 12.

Last night, the 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards took place, hosted by the hilarious Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. The duo made such a great team, I only wish there had been more of them! There were several very funny moments throughout the night, as well as some touching moments such Jody Foster’s acceptance speech for the Cecil B. DeMille Award. Another of my favorite parts of the night was when Kristen Wiig and Will Ferrell were presenters together. I was laughing my head off. I’m not sure what was with Tommy Lee Jones’ stank face during that portion of the evening, but whatever. I also loved when Adele won for “Skyfall” and they cut to Taylor Swift’s “less than impressed” face.

I watched the Awards show at Donovan & Brian‘s house along with some Homorazzi cast members and some of our other friends. As you may already know, we had made some predictions as to who we thought would win. I’ve included the results of those predictions within the list of winners below. I’m just going to put it out there right away, I suck at these types of predictions and totally lost. LOL.

2013 Golden Globes: Fashion Battles

In: Donovan, Fashion

For those actresses who didn’t make either my 2013 Golden Globes Top 10 Best Dressed or Top 5 Worst Dressed lists, I thought I’d pit some of them in fashion battles against each other. Check out a few below.

Ever since Angelina Jolie made a huge splash at last year’s Oscars with her thigh-bearing dress, several ladies have tried to channel their inner Jolie. Halle Berry and Rosie Huntington Whiteley were just two names who attempted the high-slit trend last night. Does Berry have a “leg up” on Whiteley with her printed Versace gown? Or does the Victoria’s Secret model win the battle with her black Saint Laurent dress? Cast your vote below. Side note: Didn’t Halle’s “berries” look lopsided in that dress?

As mentioned in my Top 10 Best Dressed post, there were no real fashion trainwrecks on the red carpet this year at the Golden Globes. While great for designers, it’s a huge letdown for those who tune in to laugh at the celebrities who missed the mark.

For my worst dressed list, I could only muster up five actresses who didn’t impress me. Since fashion is highly-subjective, I’m sure a few of you will appreciate the following gowns which I deemed style hiccups. Check out my list below and see if you agree or disagree with my selections.

2013 Golden Globes: My 10 Favorite Dresses

In: Donovan, Fashion, Movies, TV Shows

Did you watch the 70th annual Golden Globes? Expectations were high for Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s first hosting attempt, and boy did they deliver. I had a few people over for a potluck viewing party and we found ourselves laughing throughout the three-hour ceremony. Hopefully, this is the dawn of a new era. Fingers crossed that the duo emcee the event again next year. It definitely didn’t drag with them on deck.

Equally as impressive, were the ladies on the red carpet. There were barely any fashion trainwrecks this year which is a shame since it’s fun to mock bad choices. If there was a common theme this year, it was to go simple and understated. Another big trend was long sleeves. A few ladies really worked this to perfection. Check out my Top 10 picks for best dresses at the 2013 Golden Globes below.
