Just short and sweet, I find it a fine line between artistic integrity, videos that were on repeat at friends’ (Donovan‘s) house, and things that just made me happy despite popular concensus when considering what makes my list. But covering and considering all those bases, here we go. Agree or disagree, here were some great visuals to great songs this year that made it 2012 for me, and maybe you, but mostly me.
Love it or hate it, over a billion hits on YouTube can’t be wrong. We may never want to hear it again, but it will definitely, always remind me of 2012. Two words: Invisible. Horse.
Fiona Apple was only a teenager when she made a splashy debut with her 1996 album, “Tidal“. Not only was it met with both critical and commercial success, but it also yielded the “Criminal” singer a Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance for that track. Definitely well deserved. I was obsessed with not only the track but also the heroin chic-styled music video. Now 34-years-old, the singer is staging a comeback.
If you thought the time between her last album to her new single, “Every Single Night“, was long, get a load of the title of her upcoming fourth studio album- “The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than The Driver Of The Screw, And Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do.” How do you like them “apples”?
The new album hits stores on June 19 and features ten brand new tracks. At SXSW last month, Apple performed three of them from the new album, including “Every Single Night”. Listen to it below. My take on the track is it’s part lullaby meets aboriginal chants with Apple’s signature torturedness.
