Seeing Red

What do you get when you combine a big open space, bumpin’ music and the requirement of a red dress for entry?  You get the 2nd Annual Seattle Red Dress Party!

Let me just say that I love getting all dolled dragged up, in fact, I think there is a drag queen living under this milk chocolate layer of skin (it’s true, her name is Shelita Buffet).  This past weekend was another reason for Shelita to come out and play and did she ever.  Last week I encouraged everyone to consider attending the Seattle Red Dress party which raises awareness and money for HIV/AIDs with 100% of net proceeds going to several beneficiaries.  I truly don’t think I Shelita has had so much.  The general feeling at the Naval Reserve Center was a combination of excitement and fun.  I definitely encourage everyone to attend next year’s Red Dress Party as you are sure to take away lasting memories - even if they’re just of your friends in hideously amazing dresses.

Shelita happened to snap a few pictures of the event; check out her fun filled night below…

movember

Ah, facial hair. Some of us wish we could grow it well, and some of us wish we never had any to begin with. I have a pretty think beard that grows fairly fast. I usually don’t like shaving at all, but instead use a beard trimmer every couple of days. If I let it get too long, it starts to itch, but if I shave right to the skin, I look like a little kid.

In the month of November, men from all across the globe are participating in “Movember” (November + Mustache = Movember), or “No Shave November” to promote awareness for men’s health. Participants start clean by shaving on the first of November, and go the whole month without shaving their mustache.

The idea is that men (or a hairy woman, I guess there’s no real limitation) can register on the official Movember website and collect donations. The charity depends on what country you register in. Here in the Netherlands, proceeds go toward the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Cancer Research Fund. In Canada it’s Prostate Cancer Canada.

After a week or so, when your mustache starts to come in you can explain to all the people who start giving you weird looks what the event is about, which can help spread awareness. I don’t know any one personally that’s been affected by prostate cancer (knock on wood!), but I do know that men over 45 should get checked anally annually. So go remind all your male friends and relatives to get this done.

The cold season is upon us, and with that many and many people are going to be without food this fall and winter. I’m a very big community gay, and help out a bunch of charities yearly and am going to ask for everyone’s help right now. There’s a really great event happening this Saturday afternoon, here’s the full press release.

Food Drive to Fill the Shelves of the Greater Vancouver Food Bank
Local Food Companies Band Together to Fight Hunger in Vancouver

Richmond, BC- On October 3rd, 2009, Nature’s Path Organic Foods and seven local companies will be joining together to fight hunger by raising donations for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. Each week 25,000 people are fed by the Greater Vancouver Food Bank and 10,000 of those recipients are children. Unfortunately, even though the need is so great, the shelves of the Greater Vancouver Food Bank are currently low because of the ever-increasing demand, yet diminishing donations due to current economic pressures.

YouthCO is Canada’s first youth-driven organization leading the HIV and HepC movement through peer education, support, and shared leadership. Our Board of Directors, volunteers, members, and programming staff are made up of youth and young adults between the ages of 15 and 29. This unique position allows our education initiatives and support services to address underlying factors that make young people vulnerable to HIV and HepC and to assist youth in their efforts to make well-informed, safer decisions about sexual health and substance use.

Come celebrate 15 years of YouthCO and all its accomplishments at this dazzling, inspiring, and outrageous evening. Tickets are $40 (pre-booked) or $50 (at the door) and can be purchased through YouthCO (604 688 1441 or info@youthco.org). Can’t make it? Please support this very worthy cause by donating silent auction items or sponsoring a YouthCO member who might otherwise be unable to attend. Donations are accepted through YouthCO’s website at www.youthco.org and at their office located in downtown Vancouver.

This isn’t your grandma’s race. Chip’s Not Dead Yet is a multiple theme race located in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Part of the event is the Underwear Dash, a one-mile uphill race in your best Aussiebums, Pipe Underwear or plain ol’ tightie-whities. Participate and you could win a back yard BBQ party compliments of Russell Beer and Memphis Blues.

For the drag queens or the drag queens at heart, there is the high heel dash. A 500 meter frenzy will determine the speediest of stiletto runners and will be rewarded with a Cadillac Fairview shop card gift card valued at $1,500.

The L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center held its annual event at the Beverly Hilton, where the Golden Globe Awards take place. This year’s star-studded event: “An Evening with Women: Celebrating Art, Music & Equality,” honoured lesbians and bisexual women who have made significant contributions to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. The night included two performances by the Grammy Award winning singer/songwriter Christina Aguilera and concluded with dancing, spun by celebrity DJ Samantha Ronson. You’ve hopefully read Adam’s play-by-play of our red carpet antics at the fundraiser. Now check out the amazing things and services the largest LGBT organization in the United States has to offer.

britney-1

It’s day three of Homorazzi in Hollywood. One of the reasons we ended up going to Los Angeles was a prize Patrick and I won at www.pinkisthenewblog.com. We entered a contest back in December to win two tickets to Britney’s Concert in either Anaheim or Oakland. To make a long story short, we ended up winning the contest and picked the show in sunny Anaheim. To check out the contest and our winning submission, click here to check it out.

I have to admit, both Patrick and I didn’t have a ton of energy for the concert. We were beat from our drive from Palm Springs and the weekend activities. Adam and Brian decided to stay in WeHo, so we made plans to hook up with them after the concert. During our 40 minute drive from West Hollywood to Anaheim, Patrick discussed bailing out on the show if the ticket seats were the same or worse than our seats in Vancouver and sell them- we were never told where the seats were and just to pick them up at will call.
