The Great Gatsby Soundtrack Review

In: Matt, Music

There’s been so much hype leading up to the release of The Great Gatsby this week. The same goes for the Jay-Z curated soundtrack. We’ve talked a lot recently about individual songs as they’ve been released but now the entire soundtrack is out and, as with most of these multi-artist soundtracks, it’s a bit of a mixed bag.

The album mixes hip-hop, rock, and electronica with a 1920s jazz era sound, which results in a sexy, vibrant take on the era. If you didn’t already know the movie was set almost 100 years ago, you certainly will after listening to the soundtrack.

Listen To Emeli Sande Cover Beyonce’s Crazy In Love

In: Donovan, Music

Beyonce and Andre 3000′s cover of Amy Winehouse’s “Back To Black” incited strong feelings on both ends. Definitely the most polarizing contribution on the Great Gatsby movie soundtrack. I’m certain that Emeli Sande taking on Bey’s “Crazy In Love” and giving it a jazzy spin won’t evoke the same reaction. How could anyone hate the black Scottish Adele? I simply adore her.

Before checking out Sande’s cover, I wanted to give the 26-year-old chanteuse major props. Earlier this week, she beat a long-standing record held by The Beatles. Her debut album, Our Version of Events, has spent 63 weeks in the UK’s top 10 chart. It beats the Fab Four’s record of most consecutive weeks for a debut album at the top end of the UK’s Official Album Chart. A record The Beatles’ Please Please Me held for almost 50 years. Congrats Emeli. Check out her “Crazy In Love” cover below featuring the Bryan Ferry Orchestra.

At long last, Beyoncé and Andre 3000′s cover of “Back To Black” is finally here. On Friday night, producer Mark Ronson premiered the track on East Village Radio which explains why the audio is riddled with annoying tags from the station. After hearing Amy Winehouse’s dad diss the cover (but appreciating the royalty money), I was curious to check it out for myself.

Based on first listen, I find myself torn. Winehouse’s original version was a seductive throwback, but Bey’s cover is far darker and a touch gloomy, especially on the former Outkast member’s part. As much as I like Andre, I would’ve preferred Mrs. Carter solo on this. During her parts it’s a completely different vibe from Andre’s angry somewhat drug-induced sounding interpretation. She serves up her signature slinkiness flavor. Overall though, the feel falls in line with the mood of Baz Luhrmann’s flick and the rest of the soundtrack. Check it out below.

H&M isn’t releasing their first television commercial in support of their collaboration with Beyonce’s summer line until May 2nd, but the Swedish retailer dropped a lengthy teaser to wet our appetite. Earlier this year, the 31-year-old instructed us to “Bow Down” and now I see why.

Queen B is serving major Caribbean glamor in the Jonas Akerlund-directed clip. Loving the dark hair in a couple of the scenes. The clip sorta reminds me of one of earlier tracks. She’s giving me “Baby Boy” realness. Remember her sexy second solo music video? One of my favorites for sure. Check out the visual below.

Wicked Drake & Destiny’s Child Mashup

In: Donovan, Random Reads, Videos

If you were on the fence with Drake’s “Girls Love Beyoncé” which he dropped earlier this week, this will win you over. In the Toronto rapper’s original version, he sings the chorus from the Destiny’s Child hit track, “Say My Name,” in between his rhymes. For this mashup, Raleigh, N.C.’s JAYBeatz blends the 1999 single’s original verses and chorus seamlessly with Drake’s lyrical words. In some instances, he combines the lyrics so well, it’s as if Beyoncé and Drake are actually singing to each other. Check out an example below.

Destiny’s Child: “It’s hard to believe that you / were at home, by yourself”

Drake: “No I’m not alone, even though nothing was the same / let me get your ass alone, let me hear you say my name.”

The R&B girl group’s sassy delivery really works well with Drake’s monotone moodiness rap style. I’m not even exaggerating when I say JAYBeatz’s “We All Love Beyoncé” is my EVERYTHING. At least for this weekend it is ;) Check it out below.

Last issue, Time Magazine put same-sex marriage front and center on their cover. This time around they look to Jennifer Lawrence and six others to grace their annual 100 Most Influential issue. From artists and leaders to pioneers, titans and icons, the issue highlights the most influential people in the world. Each person is profiled by an equally luminary voice. In Lawrence’s case, it’s Academy Award winning actress Jodie Foster.

“You’ll remember where you were when you first felt it, how you were stuck to one spot like a small animal considering its end. The Jennifer Lawrence Stare. It cuts a searing swath in your gut. A reckoning. I remember going to the cutting rooms of Winter’s Bone. I thought, Sure, this girl can act. But, man, this girl can also just be.” – Jodie Foster

Photographer Mark Seliger snapped Lawrence for one of seven collectible covers. Gracing their own cover are Jay-Z (artist and entrepreneur), Elon Musk (SpaceX and Tesla founder), Li Na (tennis champion), Aamir Khan (film star and activist), Rand Paul (U.S. Senator) and 15-year-old activist Malala Yousafzai. Check out their covers below, along with some of my favorite entertainment stars included on the Time 100 list. Side note: If you love lists as much as I do, be sure to check out OUT magazine’s 50 Power List as well.

Recently Amanda Bynes tweeted a horny declaration about Drake pounding her vajayjay. The Canadian rapper’s hot new track might give the embattled star a glimmer of hope. He raps about his dating troubles and his search for the perfect leading lady. Bynes… it’s time to tweet him your digits ;)

Even only after a couple of listens, “Girls Love Beyoncé” has quickly become one of my favorites from Drake. I’m sure that has a lot to do with the fact he samples Destiny’s Child’s hit song “Say My Name.” If you’re a fan of the 26-year-old rapper, you’re fully aware that he loves the DC track. He’s performed it several times at his concerts over the years.

Drake collaborates with James Fauntleroy on the single. If you don’t know who Fauntleroy is, he’s part of Justin Timberlake’s production group The Y’s. In addition to his dating life, he also comments on materialism and sexism. “All my boys around me saying get money and fuck these hoes. Where we learn these values, I do not know what to tell you…” Take a listen at his hot new song below. I absolutely love it.

Last month we received our first look at Beyonce’s collaboration with H&M. Today, the Swedish retailer revealed more visuals from their summer ad campaign. Even Lana Del Rey fans who were upset she was replaced with Bey have to admit, the 31-year-old singer is nothing but fierce in these new visuals. There’s nothing to do but “Bow Down.” Side note: I wonder if it was planned that in every picture, one hand had to be over her head. Every shot has her showing her pits ;)

As with the previously released image, Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin snapped Mrs. Carter on location in the Bahamas. Whether reclining on a beach chair or posing against a colorful wall, she’s modeling from head to toe. Tyra Banks would be so proud. Check out more pics below.
