Donna Summer, Etta James and Whitney Houston are arguably three of the biggest names the music industry lost in 2012. That’s just the tip of the iceberg as they say. I had no idea just how many artists passed away this year until I saw this video posted by the New York Times. Their four-minute long clip titled “The Music They Made” perfectly captures the enormity of talent lost.

Included in the clip are Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys, Norah Jones’ dad sitar player Ravi Shankar, Davy Jones of the Monkees and Fleetwood Mac member Bob Welch to name a few. There are plenty more talented individuals featured in the clip. Check out the video montage below to hear some of the music these legends made throughout their career.

Yesterday, the music world sadly lost another brilliant mind. Adam Yauch, one third of hip hop group the Beastie Boys, lost his battle with cancer at 47-years-old. Yauch was diagnosed in 2009 after discovering a tumor on his salivary gland. On the Beastie Boys’ official site, the group released the following official statement:

“It is with great sadness that we confirm that musician, rapper, activist and director Adam ‘MCA’ Yauch, founding member of Beastie Boys and also of the Milarepa Foundation that produced the Tibetan Freedom Concert benefits, and film production and distribution company Oscilloscope Laboratories, passed away in his native New York City this morning after a near-three-year battle with cancer.”

In honor of Adam Yauch aka MCA, I thought I’d post five of my favorite Beastie Boys tracks. I have to admit, I didn’t really grow up on Beastie Boys music but in high school, one of my good friends introduced me to them during a road trip and I was hooked. 40 Years Since Man Landed on the Moon
After a journey of 384,403 km away, Forty Years ago on July 20th, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first men on the moon. Michael Collins was the pilot. There have been several events that NASA has planned for the entire month of July, which are listed here. Apollo 11 had launched on April 16th, 1969 so it took until the 20th until they landed.
