It’s only fitting that 42 won the box office crown this weekend. Tomorrow, the Major Baseball League celebrates its annual Jackie Robinson Day celebrating the first African-American’s debut in the MLB. The biopic starring newcomer Chadwick Boseman and Harrison Ford raked in $27.3 million, besting recent baseball-themed films. Moneyball and Trouble With The Curve debuted with $19.5 million and $12.2 million respectively. 42 should have a healthy run given its A+ CinemaScore grade and playing well to different demos- African-American crowds, older moviegoers and women.
Also opening this weekend was the fifth installment of the Scary Movie franchise. The spoof sequel starring Charlie Sheen, Lindsay Lohan and Ashley Tisdale earned a disappointing $15.2 million. It’s predecessor brought in $40.2 million in its opening weekend seven years ago. The silver lining here is it did better than Lohan’s last film. With a C- CinemaScore grade, the film’s future looks even scarier than Lohan’s ;) Check out the rest of the Top 10 below.
