Book Review: The Letter Q

In: Saturday Submissions, The Arts, Totally GAY!

This isn’t a novel. This is a collection of letters, written by some of the greatest queer authors of the day, to their younger selves. As such, I don’t recommend sitting down and reading it from cover to cover. Keep it tucked away in your backpack or purse or briefcase, and pull it out when you need a warm fuzzy or a pep talk or simply a few moments of enjoyment.

Each letter is unique. Some even take the form of comics. They tackle all the issues you’d expect: bullying, coming out, sex, and all the emotions that go with them: shame, fear, anger, and eventually pride and contentment.

Mary Lambert Debuts New Video For ‘Forget Me’

In: Music, Nic

I previously wrote about Mary Lambert when she did the fantastic collaboration with Ryan Lewis and Macklemore on the “Same Love” video. Macklemore really stepped into the spotlight in my eyes with the bold message he sent out with that song, and, well, now he’s a ridiculous success. Stand up for what you believe in people!

Well Mary is still going strong and pounding out some beautiful melodies, now out with a new video for the song “Forget Me”. The video is also incredibly well shot, and really reads like a short film, and with some great harmonies that remind me of why I fell in love with music like Imogen Heap. She’s really done a great job.

Based out of Seattle, Mary’s bio reads slightly humorous, saying, “Mary Lambert is good at two things; crying and singing”, and after YouTubing some of her videos, and some of her great spoken word stuff, I can see this songstress has a lot going on for her besides her humour, with some serious soul and a guitar. Did I mention she’s a proud lesbian? We love that!

I would love to see Mary Live, and after looking at her tour dates, and I can see she’s so close to being here in TO, performing in NYC this Tuesday the 21st for only $12 at Subculture, and then back to the dear West Coast in Seattle on the 23rd at The Crocodile. AND if anyone is going to Sasquatch, she’ll be on stage with Macklemore!

If you’re a fan of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, you’re in luck. After a few weeks of speculation, Joss Whedon has confirmed that the twin brother-sister combo will appear in The Avengers 2. Fans were worried that their inclusion might not happen due to legal issues. The characters are mutants and the offspring of Magneto. Since FOX owns the X-Men franchise, ergo the dilemma. In the end, all seems copacetic.

“You know, they had a rough beginning. They’re interesting to me because they sort of represent the part of the world that wouldn’t necessarily agree with The Avengers. So they’re not there to make things easier. I’m not putting any characters in the movie that will make things easier.” – Joss Whedon to IGN

For those who aren’t familiar with the siblings, here’s a quick rundown. Quicksilver aka Pietro Maximoff has the power of speed, while Scarlet Witch aka Wanda Maximoff can cast hexes which manipulate probability and alter reality. No actors are attached to the roles, but Saoirse Ronan has been rumored to be the prototype for Scarlet Witch. In other Avengers-related news, Whedon addressed the possibility of Robert Downey Jr. joining The Avengers sequel. Keep reading to find out.

Back in January, Britney Spears teased that she was heading to the studio to record a song for her boys. We finally get to hear the fruits of that labor. “Ooh La La” is lifted off the Smurfs 2 soundtrack. Clearly, the track isn’t intended as a club banger or even a radio-friendly single. This one is for the kids ya’ll. With that being said, I’m sure die hard Brit fans are going to eat this up and proclaim it as the second coming. Take a listen below and give your thoughts in the comments section.

Most Adorable NBA Bromance Or…

In: Donovan, Sports & Health, Totally GAY!

You’ve undoubtedly heard of Brangelina, TomKat and Bennifer I’m sure. There’s a new pop culture portmanteau taking over the interwebz… Linsons. Meet Jeremy Lin and Chandler Parsons aka the most adorable bromance in the NBA.

The Houston Rockets teammates have blown up on the internet with their very public displays of affection. From their secret handshake to their longing stares, everything has been documented on tumblr pages and fan fiction sites. Even though they make NBA-sized salaries, Jeremy even stayed on Chandler’s couch because his furniture hadn’t arrived yet. Like he couldn’t afford a hotel.

I don’t like to speculate on people’s sexuality, but there’s something definitely going on besides being BFFs. Jason Collins paved the rainbow way in the NBA. All the cool kids are doing it ;) If they aren’t dating, they really should. They are friggin’ adorable. I wonder how Lin’s previous BFF, former New York Knick teammate, Landry Fields, feels about losing out his buddy to Parsons ;) Check out plenty of incriminating photos below.

While a move to Friday nights isn’t going to help The Carrie Diaries, at least the Sex and the City prequel is getting a second season. Silver lining right? I thought I was alone in enjoying the show, but after asking Homorazzi.com readers their thoughts on a Season 2 renewal, I was surprised by the resounding support. After hearing producers’ plans for next season, I’m glad The CW gave it another shot.

In Season 1, we discovered how Carrie’s (AnnaSophia Robb) love for Manolo Blahniks and cosmopolitans began. Though we met her BFFs during her high school years, none of our favorites from the HBO series appeared. But that’s all about to change come Fall. On the season finale Standford Blatch’s name was dropped as Bennet’s club-promoter roommate. Maybe a young Standford is in our future? But one thing is certain… Charlotte, Samantha or Miranda is being introduced next year. Find out who and how below.

I can already picture the pitch meeting with the studio execs, “it’s The Hangover but with seniors.” In all honesty, if they rebranded this The Hangover Part 65, I would buy it as a sequel to the Bradley Cooper flicks.

When you hear of four Academy Award-winning actors starring in a film, the last thing you’d expect from them to appear in is a comedy about boozing it up in Las Vegas. It’s for that very reason that makes Last Vegas potentially a hilarious flick. Seeing Morgan Freeman getting his drunk on is worth the price of admission alone. Who knew he was such a party animal? Check out the teaser trailer and official synopsis below.

Official Synopsis

Billy (Academy Award®-winner Michael Douglas), Paddy (Academy Award®-winner Robert De Niro), Archie (Academy Award®-winner Morgan Freeman) and Sam (Academy Award®-winner Kevin Kline) have been best friends since childhood. So when Billy, the group’s sworn bachelor, finally proposes to his thirty-something (of course) girlfriend, the four head to Las Vegas with a plan to stop acting their age and relive their glory days. However, upon arriving, the four quickly realize that the decades have transformed Sin City and tested their friendship in ways they never imagined. The Rat Pack may have once played the Sands and Cirque du Soleil may now rule the Strip, but it’s these four who are taking over Vegas.

How much would you pay for a nude painting of your favorite celebrity? Depending on whom, I’d consider maybe shelling out $100? Clearly, I’m much of an art aficionado. I definitely would’ve been out of my league at a recent Christie’s auction.

A 1991 painting of Bea Arthur topless that was expected to sell between $1.8-2.5 million sold for a whopping $1.9 million. No joke. Here’s the funny thing, the Golden Girls actress never posed for it. Artist John Currin relied on a photo of a clothed Arthur during her Maude days for the piece. A spokesman for Christie’s called the painting “historically significant,” though noting that “it’s radical to sexualize someone people think of as asexual.” Check out the uncensored photo below.
