Empire’s Ratings Once Again Rises, Defying Odds

In: Donovan, TV Shows

Empire shocked industry experts with its big premiere. Most expected those numbers to drop for its second outing. However, the FOX show defied odds and actually rose. In its third week, the hip-hop drama once again surprises and posts gains. This is practically unheard of these days in the DVR era.

Empire scored a gigantic 4.3, up 8 percent from last week’s 4.0 adults 18-49 rating and ranking as the highest rated drama telecast in over a year. Overall it climbed to 10.9 million viewers. This weeks gains could be attributed to a number of things.

Buzz for the show is absolutely insane. In addition, American Idol also rose this week which gave it a better lead-in. Meanwhile, Modern Family and black-ish aired reruns which could’ve also been a factor. Whatever the reason, the show is officially a hit.

On last night’s episode, Naomi Campbell made her debut as the older lover of Lucious’ youngest son. I can’t wait for Jennifer Hudson, Mary J. Blige, Courtney Love and more to pop up during this season.

While the men have been stealing the spotlight, especially Jussie Smollett, in terms of music on the show, Serayah McNeil and V. Bozeman sassed it up on the infectious “Bad Girl” last night. It’s reminiscent of early Beyonce. Give it a listen below.

Did you feel there was something a little off with Lana Del Rey’s last album Ultraviolence? Perhaps it was the fact she didn’t work with Emile Haynie who produced most of her breakthrough album, Born To Die. Her signature melancholy orchestral tones were less prevalent for sure. The 29-year-old reunites with the American producer for a new track.

Wait For Life” could easily have been lifted from Born To Die. Instead, the new track is from Haynie’s forthcoming debut album titled We Fall, due out February 24.

Along with Del Rey, Emile enlisted an all-star roster of talent to lend their vocals. Among those involved include Rufus Wainwright, Nate Ruess from f.u.n., Lykke Li and Randy Newman to name a few. Listen to “Wait For Life” below.

Is it me or is 20th Century Fox totally pimping out Taron Egerton in their latest promos? The first couple focused mostly on the premise of the comic book adaptation. But lately, there’s definitely more visuals of the 25-year-old Welsh actor without his shirt. Not that I’m complaining.

Kingsman: The Secret Service is based on the comic book written by Mark Millar. It tells the story of a super-secret spy organization that recruits an unrefined but promising street kid (Egerton) into the agency’s ultra-competitive training program just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius.

Matthew Vaughn dropped out of directing X-Men: Days of Future Past to direct this film which boasts an impressive cast and plenty of cameos. Michael Caine, Colin Firth, Samuel L. Jackson, Lady Gaga, Elton John, Adele and David Beckham all appear in the movie.

If Egerton’s buff little bod isn’t enough to lure you in, the array of slick blazers might entice you. Seriously, I want every sport coat featured in the trailer. Kingsman: The Secret Service hits theaters nationwide on Friday, February 13, 2015. Check out the trailer below.

Madonna Responds To Arrest Of Her Alleged Hacker

In: Donovan, Music

Back in December, demos for most of Madonna‘s forthcoming album leaked online. It appears the culprit behind the massive leak of Rebel Heart has been apprehended.

Israeli police believe they’ve caught the 39-year-old man who hacked into Madge’s computer. Allegedly the man is suspected of stealing work from other artists as well. Media in Tel Aviv report the suspect is a former contestant on one of the singing competitions in the country. The arrest comes after a month-long investigation by the country’s FBI-like agency- Lahav 433.

“[The suspect] broke into the personal computers of several international artists over the past few months and stole promotional final-cut singles which have yet to be released and traded them online for a fee.” – Lahav 433

Naturally, Madonna is thankful that the man supposedly responsible for this nightmare is behind bars. She wrote the following on Facebook.

Meghan Trainor was supposed to help Gwen Stefani mentor her team during last season, but Christina Aguilera stepped in last second. No disrespect to the “All About That Bass” singer but I’m glad X-Tina popped up. It was great seeing two female Voice coaches teaming up. It got me even more excited for Christina’s return to her red swivel chair. Anyone else stoked?

Trainor has just been revealed as one of the mentors for The Voice Season 8. Reportedly, she’ll assist reigning winning coach Blake Shelton when the NBC singing competition returns.

Nick Jonas who appeared last season to sing his hit song “Jealous” will also share his insight with the aspiring singers. The Kingdom actor joins Team Christina Aguilera. Find out who’s paired up with Adam Levine and Pharrell Williams below.

TLC proved they “Ain’t 2 Proud 2 Beg” earlier this week when they launched a Kickstarter campaign asking their fans to fund the recording of their final album. The remaining members of the girl group offered up dance lessons, a workout, access to a listening party and lots of signed paraphernalia to lure in donations.

“While major labels offer artists multimillion dollar recording and marketing budgets, they don’t often give artists complete control of their own music. It is ESSENTIAL that we create our final album completely on our own terms, without any restrictions, with YOU.” – TLC

As of right now, the girls have amassed over $110,000 in donations, almost reaching their goal of $150,000. With 28 days left in the campaign, they should have no problem meeting, if not, exceeding that number. About $5,000 came from Miss “Roar” herself.

Katy Perry, according to TMZ, shelled out money for the project. Who knew she was such a fan? Based on that amount, Perry either gets a onesie or a night with the girls for an epic slumber party. Hopefully, it’s the latter. Can you just imagine the Instagram selfies from that night of pillow talk?

Since Perry obviously loves their music, hopefully a collaboration can happen. Fingers crossed. If you want an idea of what that might sound like, check out this fan-made TLC-Katy Perry mashup below from a couple of years ago.

Snow White and the Huntsman did boffo box office, generating almost $400 million worldwide. Naturally, the movie studio wanted to greenlight a sequel. Problem is Kristen Stewart who played the princess and her affair with the film’s director cast negative press upon the film.

Universal decided to forge ahead but put the focus on Chris Hemsworth’s character, The Huntsman, leaving Snow White to live her happily-ever-after. Find out below who’s joining Charlize Theron and Hemsworth in the film.
