Usher’s Confessions Celebrates 10th Anniversary

In: Donovan, Music

This album is possibly the last physical CD I purchased. I can’t believe Confessions celebrated its 10th anniversary this weekend on March 23. Where does the time go? It seems just like yesterday when Usher was ‘burning’ up the charts with this album and arsenal of hit singles.

The album’s themes generated controversy due to the personal nature. Many assumed it was Usher singing about his failed relationship with TLC’s Chili, but producer Jermaine Dupri claimed the record reflected his personal story.

Confessions was a hit out of the gate, selling 1.1 million copies in its first week. Until Adele’s 21 passed the ten million mark domestically in 2011, Usher’s Confessions was the last album to achieve RIAA Diamond certification. According to Billboard, Usher’s LP is the second best-selling album in the 2000s decade.

His fourth studio album spawned five Top 10 hits, including four chart-toppers. To be fair two of them, “My Boo” and “Caught Up,” were part of a special edition of the LP. It was a strategy employed by the 35-year-old singer to boost album sales amid threats of bootlegging.

I’m certain some of you are tired of all the “First Kiss” imitations out there. I can definitely relate. However, this latest one is an actual PSA encouraging condom use and not one promoting a women’s clothing line or a comedic spoof. To boot, this one features all gay men.

New Zealand’s community-focused program Love Your Condom enlisted ten gay strangers to make out for the first time. Much like the original, the couples start off awkwardly but then really get into it. You go girls. What I also appreciate about the PSA is the cultural diversity. Solid job Kiwis. I just adore this man. If you don’t share the same sentiment, you probably won’t find this video fascinating.

Andy Cohen decided to film himself watching Lady Gaga’s “G.U.Y.” music video for the first time. As you know, Mother Monster’s latest visual opus features numerous cameos including Mr. Bravo himself. Cohen plays a Zeus-like deity floating in the clouds. Watching his reactions to seeing his RHOBH cast, Gaga’s antics and himself are adorably priceless. Check it out below.

“It was an amazing experience,” Andy says in a YouTube video released Sunday. “I shot my part on a day that I didn’t even think Gaga was going to be there. She was — she directed me. It was crazy, it was amazing, it was fun.”

Josh Henderson recently replaced Kellan Lutz as Op’s celebrity face. It’s a good thing Abbot & Main still wants to be in the Lutz business. The 29-year-old once again fronts the label’s ad campaign. It’d be rather embarrassing if he didn’t. After all, Lutz is one of the co-founders, along with Danny Goez, of the Venice Beach inspired lifestyle clothing line.

“I love the process from beginning to end. It’s a great creative outlet for me. My career lends me the opportunity to travel the world and I’m always inspired by my surroundings and environment.” – Kellan Lutz

Lutz can next be seen in The Expendables 3 which hits theaters later this year. Hopefully, the film grosses more than his last vehicle, The Legend of Hercules. He, along with the majority of the Twilight cast, have found difficulties achieving film success since the vampire franchise ended. It’s a good thing he’s pretty. Check him out modeling his label’s line below.

Long before the huge retro-revival headlined by Daft Punk, Pharrell and Justin Timberlake, Montreal’s Chromeo were at the forefront, experimenting with the late disco dance sound. The duo recently released a fun clip for their catchy new single, “Jealous (I Ain’t With It).”

Dave 1 plays an envious pastor at some random Las Vegas wedding chapel. It’s not groundbreaking by any means but it’s an entertaining little romp. The track is lifted off their forthcoming album, White Women, which hits stores May 12th via Atlantic Records. It was reportedly inspired by Wyclef and Mary J. Blige’s 2000 duet, “911,” which Chromeo’s Dave 1 heard while writing at a Jamaican strip club. Check out the clip below.

Penny Dreadful’s Skin Crawling Promo

In: Donovan, TV Shows

Some of literature’s most terrifying characters, including Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray, and iconic figures from the novel Dracula are lurking in the darkest corners of Victorian London. Penny Dreadful is a frightening psychological thriller that weaves together these classic horror origin stories into a new adult drama airing on Showtime beginning Sunday, May 11. Think Once Upon A Time but more horrifying.

The series is produced by John Logan (Skyfall), Pippa Harris (Revolutionary Road) and Sam Mendes. Starring in Showtime’s horror series are Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton, Billie Piper, and Eva Green. Check out the skin crawling promo below.

“I started thinking about themes and why almost 200 years after [Mary Shelley's Frankenstein] was written, we’re still reading Frankenstein,” self-professed “monster geek” Logan said. “I think it’s because the monsters break my heart. Growing up as a gay man before it was socially acceptable, I knew what it was to feel different, alienated and not like everyone else.”
