time-influential-leonardo-dicaprio

Time magazine’s annual 100 Most Influential People list celebrates pioneers, titans, artists, leaders, innovators and icons and more. Each person to make the cut is the subject of a short essay written by another notable public figure. In Leonardo DiCaprio’s case, it’s from U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry.

“Leo’s talent is limitless, but his secret has always been pretty simple: he’s real. He does his homework. He knows what he’s talking about. That’s how he takes himself back in time 200 years to create an Oscar-winning, bear-brawling, powerhouse performance in The Revenant.” – John Kerry is the U.S. Secretary of State

Nicki Minaj, Priyanka Chopra, Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan, Hamilton maestro Lin-Manuel Miranda and International Monetary Fund Christine Lagarde all received their own separate covers for the 2016 class.

Other notable names to make the cut this year include Adele, Ronda Rousey, Taraji P. Henson, Caitlyn Jenner, Aziz Ansari, Hillary Clinton, Karlie Kloss, Jordan Spieth, Ariana Grande and Melissa McCarthy to name a few. Check out below all the other covers which were snapped by photographer Ben Hassett.

Legendary Singer Prince Dies At 57

In: Donovan, Music

I’m truly, truly shocked and saddened by this. Legendary singer Prince has died at the age of 57.

He was at his Paisley Park studio in Minnesota when he passed away. Not much is known about his death at this time. Just last week, his private plane was forced to land in Illinois so he could seek medical treatment for flu-like symptoms. He performed in concert one day later.

“It is with profound sadness that I am confirming that the legendary, iconic performer, Prince Rogers Nelson, has died at his Paisley Park residence this morning at the age of 57,” Yvette Noel-Schure, a publicist for the musician, said in a statement.

Over his illustrious career, he’s won seven Grammy Awards, scored five chart-toppers and 14 other Top 10 hits. The Purple One also won an Oscar for Best Original Song for his classic film, Purple Rain. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame back in 2004. He was also very instrumental in the careers of many including Vanity, Sheila E and Sheena Easton to name a few.

“Our GRAMMY family is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of seven-time GRAMMY Award winner Prince. Today, we remember and celebrate him as one of the most uniquely gifted artists of all time. Never one to conform, he redefined and forever changed our musical landscape. Prince was an original who influenced so many, and his legacy will live on forever. We have lost a true innovator and our sincerest condolences go out to his family, friends, collaborators, and all who have been impacted by his incredible work.” – Neil Portnow, the president and CEO, of the Recording Academy.

I can’t even begin to name my favorite tracks from Prince. He has so many. “Kiss,” “Little Red Corvette,” “When Doves Cry,” “Let’s Go Crazy,” “Raspberry Beret” and “U Got The Look” are just a few that immediately come to mind. What are you favorite tracks? Share below.

It was heavily touted as the gay Girls. Sadly, it never lived up to the hype with viewers and critics alike. After two seasons and only 18 episodes, HBO pulled the plug on Looking. As a consolation prize, the network promised a finale special that would tie up all the characters’ loose ends.

At long last, we’ll finally find out if Patrick (Jonathan Groff) chooses Kevin (Russell Tovey), Richie (Raul Castillo) or himself. The Looking wrap-up film will premiere at the Frameline Film Festival, taking place in San Francisco from June 16-26. It will reportedly close out the festival.

Fingers crossed HBO doesn’t take too much time after the festival ends to air the finale special. I’m still salty about the cancellation and God damnit I’ve waited long enough after the Season 2 finale.

Get ready to knock on their door once again. The Hollywood Reporter reveals New Line is in negotiations to adapt the classic sitcom, Three’s Company, for the silver screen. Reportedly, He’s Just Not That Into You writers Abby Kohn and Marc Sivlerstein are penning the screenplay which will be set in the 1970s.

Three’s Company ran on ABC from 1977 to 1984 and made John Ritter, Suzanne Somers and Joyce DeWitt into household names. The Top 10 show earned Ritter an Emmy and Golden Globe for his portrayal of Jack Tripper- a young man pretending to be gay so he could live with two women. The series was based on a British TV show, Man About The House.

Three’s Company is just the latest vintage television series to get a feature film treatment. 21 Jump Street, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and Baywatch are just a few in recent memory that have as well.

Do you think New Line has a potential hit or flop on their hands? Did you watch the original? Sound off below.

Harriet Tubman To Be New Face Of US $20 Bill

In: Donovan, Random Reads
harriet-tubman-us-money

There were rumblings that the $10 bill was getting a makeover. But due to the popularity of Broadway musical, Hamilton, and its creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda, winning the Pulitzer Prize this week, Alexander Hamilton will remain the face of the US $10 bill… for now.

Instead, it’s Andrew Jackson who’s being pushed aside. The United States Treasury Department announced Harriet Tubman will replace the seventh president on a new $20 note. It’s quite fitting that Tubman, an African-American who was instrumental freeing slaves via the Underground Railroad, kicks Jackson, who owned hundreds of slaves, to the curb.

the-magnificent-seven-remake-trailer

The Magnificent Seven is a remake of the classic 1960 western film of the same name, which in turn was a remake of the 1954 Japanese film Seven Samurai. The film has been in the planning stages for years now with Tom Cruise, Kevin Costner and Matt Damon at points rumored to be part of the project. Alas, none of them made the finished product. Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt lead this new band of outlaws.

The Magnificent Seven (2016) Movie Synopsis

Director Antoine Fuqua brings his modern vision to a classic story in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures’ and Columbia Pictures’ The Magnificent Seven. With the town of Rose Creek under the deadly control of industrialist Bartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard), the desperate townspeople employ protection from seven outlaws, bounty hunters, gamblers and hired guns – Sam Chisolm (Denzel Washington), Josh Farraday (Chris Pratt), Goodnight Robicheaux (Ethan Hawke), Jack Horne (Vincent D’Onofrio), Billy Rocks (Byung-Hun Lee), Vasquez (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), and Red Harvest (Martin Sensmeier). As they prepare the town for the violent showdown that they know is coming, these seven mercenaries find themselves fighting for more than money.

Based on the first teaser trailer, this remake looks like it’ll be a barrel of fun. On a side note, does it seem like Pratt’s character is the same one he played in Jurassic World and Guardians of the Galaxy but in a cowboy hat? Am I alone in thinking that?

The Magnificent Seven rides into theaters on September 23. Check out the clip below.
