For the last two months, I have been working alongside a great local charity here in Vancouver named A Loving Spoonful. A Loving Spoonful is a volunteer-driven, non-partisan Society that provides free, nutritious meals to people living with HIV/AIDS in Greater Vancouver. Every week, all year round for over 19 years, our volunteers deliver approximately 1200 frozen meals and over 250 snack packs to men, women and children who are primarily homebound with AIDS. Our average meal cost is only $3.55. A Loving Spoonful is the constant support of over 250 adults and children living with HIV/AIDS throughout the Greater Vancouver area.

Starting in December, I had the privilege of meeting about 25 little rascals from Strathcona Elementary School who would help make up the bulk of a very ambitious project – a flash mob in downtown Vancouver’s shopping mall, Pacific Centre and at the food court during the lunch rush. Working with the kids twice a week on choreography and dance moves, we built a dance that had them both excited and singing along to Erika Jayne’s “Party People“. With the help of a few my own dance friends, we pulled off an extremely fun flash mob all to support a great cause – is A Loving Spoonful’s annual Valentine’s Day charity drive. A CandyGram is a Valentine’s card with one of over 150 creative stock messages, separated equally between three categories of “Like” (Friendship), “Love” (Partner), or “Lust” (Romantic Interest). The Candygram includes: A special edition card, your unique message, 2 delicious Purdy’s chocolates, a Yelpstick lip balm and Shamin Jewelers ‘Perfect Kiss’ mints and $15 Gift Card. (Value $25). CandyGrams can be sent to husbands, wives, friends, brothers, sisters, co-workers, teachers, boyfriends, girlfriends, lovers, etcetera – the list and possibilities truly are endless. CandyGrams also have no geographic boundaries and can be mailed anywhere in Canada! You can start your order here. Now check out our little flash mob below.

Vancouver welcomes a brand new burger joint today and it’s definitely worth checking out. Max’s Burgers is the brainchild of Chef Connor Butler (Connor Butler Restaurant, C, Pearl on the Rock) and Redpath Foods, the team that has brought you Max’s Deli and Stuart’s Bakery for decades.

Located just off Cambie Street at 8th Avenue, Max’s Burgers is a great alternative to the fast food chains and Vancouver mainstays like Cactus Club and Milestones in the area. Moderately priced between $9 and $13, you can treat yourself to a gourmet burger in a casual dining/fast food setting.

Whether you’re a beef lover, seafood connoisseur or vegetarian, Max’s Burgers offers a burger for everyone’s taste palette. All of which are served with fresh Kennebec fries, onion rings and yam fries – all fried in yummy tallow.  As if that wasn’t enough deliciousness for your taste buds, be sure to order one of their grownup milkshakes *cough* alcoholic beverages *cough* to help that burger go down even more smoothly. Don’t fret concerned parents, they also some virgin ones as well for the kiddies.

Prior to opening its doors to the public Monday, January 23rd, Brian and I were invited to sample some of Chef Connor’s “perfect burgers” for a media event. Spending three hours nibbling on burgers and sipping on cocktails probably wasn’t the best idea for our new diets, but boy was it worth it. The positive side of our culinary evening is we now get to recommend our favorites to you. Read and see what we liked below.

Even if you’re not a hardcore football fan, the Super Bowl is definitely worth watching. The yearly sporting event is a grand spectacular of excess. Not only is the halftime show an extravaganza on an epic scale (Madonna is on deck this year) but so are the commercials. Companies shell out big dollars to hawk their products during the game. With an audience over 100 million viewers, the commercials sometimes get as much, if not, more attention than the actual game.

Volkswagen just launched an adorable teaser for their 2012 Super Bowl campaign. Once again the automaker relied on The Force for its Star Wars-themed commercial which makes sense since the ad last year was very well-received. This year, instead of using a pint-sized kid dressed up as Darth Vader to star in the commercial, they’ve rounded up a bunch of canines to do the job. Titled “The Bark Side“, the dogs’ various barks, woofs, and howls are brilliantly used to compose a sort of concerto of The Imperial March.

Protect Your Package With MYPAKAGE Underwear

In: Charge It, Fashion, Tyrell

Have you ever been to the gym or done an extreme sport and been wearing the wrong underwear for the job? You find that your balls are getting in the way and making you uncomfortable or that your package just doesn’t feel protected? Then I have the underwear for you. May I introduce you MYPAKAGE undies.

These undies are made up of 93% Model and 7% Spandex. It absorbs more than 50% better than cotton but is still incredibly breathable. Because the fabric combination is so progressive, you’ll find that it never shrinks or wrinkles after the wash. Another great feature of the underwear’s fabric is that it is resistant to pilling caused by friction and will always remain incredibly soft. Bonus!

But what about his underwear keeps your package and your balls safe? That would be their Keyhole Comfort Technology which is pictured in the photo above. I have been trying out a few pairs of the undies which come in a Weekday and Weekend Collection. Whether it’s at the gym or a dance rehearsal, these undies have the family jewels fully protected. Check out how the undies work below.

Toronto Vintage: Leslieville

In: Charge It, Redd

I’ve been busy checking out Toronto’s many different neighbourhoods and I’ve quickly fallen in love with Leslieville. This east-end neighborhood is virtually untouched by large retail companies and instead littered with independent business owners from restaurants to cafes and clothing retailers to vintage furniture shops.

Since moving to Toronto, I’ve been slowly furnishing my place and have started looking at vintage decoration pieces to give my place a bit of character. A friend of mine introduced me to the many vintage furniture shops in Leslieville and instantly I was hooked. We were both saying that it was a good thing that Leslieville was a bit of a trek for us because if we were closer, we’d spend all our money on vintage finds.

Check out three stores I visited which had great vintage stuff at affordable prices.

The hours are counting down and for some of you, you’ve already rang in the New Year. To those of you who have done so, don’t tell us the future. For those of us in the Western Hemisphere who are still awaiting midnight, we have a few drink recipes to share with you if you’re still looking for that last minute addition to your house party.

To warm up your guests, serve them the EFFEN® Savory cocktail. Recently served exclusively at Zac Posen’s Holiday Party, Zac stated that “the EFFEN Savory was a clean and chic cocktail – it was a great way to celebrate in style with my friends and studio family.” The party may have been exclusive (so exclusive we weren’t even invited…) BUT we were fortunate enough to get the recipe to share with you.

To switch up the tradition of toasting champagne when the clock strikes twelve, mix it up by handing out the Basil Hayden’s® Apple Bubbly. It’s the easiest mixed drink you’ll make all night. Plus, it’s garnished with an apple slice. Who doesn’t love that? Check out this delicious recipes below.

Did everyone have a merry Christmas? Did you get everything you asked Santa for on your list? If you’re up in Canada, you can check out these titles while you are doing your Boxing Day shopping.

This week’s featured release is Final Destination 5. The gory, thriller flick brings back all the antics from the previous films in the series. Here is a quick synopsis:

Death is just as omnipresent as ever, and in Final Destination 5 it strikes again. During the bus ride to a corporate retreat, Sam (Nicholas D’Agosto) has a premonition in which he and most of his friends — as well as numerous others — die in a horrific bridge collapse. When his vision ends, events begin to mirror what he had seen, and he frantically ushers as many of his colleagues — including his friend, Peter (Miles Fisher), and girlfriend, Molly (Emma Bell) — away from the disaster before Death can claim them. EASY Things For a Christmas Dinner WOW!

In: Charge It, Nic

We’re taking the day off today, so we decided to repost some of our favorite Christmas-themed posts from this and previous years.

Christmas is a time to eat and drink and sleep and then wake up and eat and drink more and finish it off with a little drinking and midnight eating. At least I hope so, because today I was on the Gold Coast and saw a woman going into the Fitness First gym here on Christmas Eve while I was coming out of the beer store and it just sickened me. SICKENED ME! GIVE IT UP FOR THE HOLIDAYS!@#

Moving on, with all this eating and drinking every year, sometimes we can get into the routine of making the same Christmas dinner over and over. And sometimes that’s absolutely FINE because Christmas dinner is delicious no matter what. But if in fact you need to surprise yourself and your family a little and put in that WOW factor for a little jazz, try one or two or all three of these little tips to give your dinner a little tip over the edge – something they’ll be craving until next year.

1. The Ultimate Ham Rub!

If you’re making a ham this year, don’t go ANOTHER MINUTE without putting this delicious sticky rub on the outside of it. Cook your ham as directed and then 20 minutes before it’s finished, pull it out, score it with half inch deep scores all over and mix together this:

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 2 tablespoons brandy (or water)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger

You really might even have the ingredients already hanging around from making gingerbread. Just make it into a paste, rub it all over that ham bake it for another 20 minutes. You’ll have a ham that me and my friends and family crave and praise every year. Delicieux!
