Top Ten lists are everywhere these days. It’s a quick entertainment fix to wash away the midday boredom. I came across a Top 10 list the other day that caught my attention: Top 10 Best Spike Jonze Directed Music Videos.
You may know Jonze from his movies Being John Malkovich and the upcoming film adaptation of Where the Wild Things Are, but you’d probably recognize at least a couple of his music videos.
I’ve always had a love for his Bjork, It’s Oh So Quiet video and some of his Beastie Boys videos as well. Though my favourite music video director turned film director is Michel Gondry. Gondry has directed a couple awesome movies (Be Kind, Rewind, The Science of Sleep and the magnificent Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), but his earlier work as a music video director is what really caught my attention. He has such an eye for editing and perspective, there’s no one else out there that even compares.
He’s the one responsible for creating the stopped time shots made famous by his Gap ads, and in the Matrix film.
Episode two wasn’t much of a change from last week. We have another celebrity judge, Mitchell can’t sew, and Marvin is weird and pretentious.
This weeks celebrity judge is formal model and current T.V. & movie star Rebecca Romijn (sans Stamos). Romijn is now married to fellow T.V. and movie star Jerry O’Connell and at the time of taping was pregnant with twins. Awwww.
And there’s the premise for this week’s challenge. Design a chic pregnancy look. They can design for any type of event. Unfortunately, no one chose to design for the actual birth and we got a bunch of lame dresses. I wonder if there’s any coincidence with the fact that the show moved to the Lifetime Network and that they’re doing a pregnancy challenge. Good thing they didn’t move to the Discovery Channel, or they might have had to make a dress for an elephant… On second thought, same thing really.
I know Landon usually does the dance music posts, but good music is good music and I wanted to share a great new CD from Scotland’s Calvin Harris. Ready for the Weekend was released on August 17th of this year and it’s pretty sweet.
I didn’t really like his earlier album, I Created Disco, but more than a few tracks off Weekend are really good. It’s sort of a mix between Daft Punk and Tiesto. Calvin’s singing voice is sort of dramatic and deep, very Euro.
The new album has a track with Dizzee Rascal called “Dance Wiv Me”, which is a sweet dark beat behind it. The real stand out track for me though is “I’m Not Alone”. Love it!
Calvin Harris is currently on tour and is doing a DJ set in Vancouver at Venue on September 13th.
Oh Shit, here we go! Round 6 of my favorite unscripted television show. A new season of Project Runway isn’t just an event, it’s a reason to get out of bed in the morning!
Project runway has evolved over the years into one of the premiere reality competition based T.V. shows. I know to a lot of people that may not seem to be that much of a compliment considering the quality of most reality T.V. shows, but let’s not paint them all with the same brush.
The production values, editing, qualified guest and regular judges, and genuine talent on Project Runway all coalesce into one heck of a show.
The first episode of the new season aired on Thursday, and it was something.
When I think beauty, three things that would probably never cross my mind are Russian, Prison, or Women (sorry convicts). Combine them all though, and we get quite the spectacle.
These pictures from a Russian woman’s prison beauty pageant are just awesome. Click here for more. The site’s in Russina, so I could only get what I read from Boing Boing. Rumored segments included evening wear, the talent competition, and snitch cutting.
This just goes to show you, prisoners are still people. Although, really what’s worse: A convicted murderer or a beauty pageant stage mother?
I can’t wait until the next season of Russia’s Next Top Jail Model.
And now, the exciting conclusion to last weeks fight between 27 year old Sous Chef Joseph from Massapequa Park, NY and celebrity loud mouth Gordon Ramsey.
I agree with Ramsey, no respect. Best part is when he trips over the stair and Ramsey says “Watch your step”, then cut to the other contestants laughing, followed by Joseph repeating “Watch your step, bitch!”.
Dude’s got issues. Hopefully he will look back at this one day and melt from embarrassment. How do you face your friends, your MOTHER, after pulling something like that on national television. He won’t ever be able to put on his resumé that he was on Hell’s Kitchen.
So long Joseph, don’t let the door of opportunity hit your ass on the way out.
This video of the Kuroshio Sea, the world’s second biggest aquarium, is awe inspiring. It’s located at the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium in Okinawa, Japan. The pristine water and fluid motion of all the manta rays is so beautiful. The video author (Jon Rawlinson) tagged on some sappy song by Barcelona (Please Don’t Go) to add some emotional elements, but even watching it with no sound is quite breathtaking. Make sure to watch this in HD (click the HD button in the bottom left). The main tank called the ‘Kuroshio Sea’ holds 7,500-cubic meters (1,981,290 gallons) of water and features the world’s second largest acrylic glass panel, measuring 8.2 meters by 22.5 meters with a thickness of 60 centimeters. Whale sharks and manta rays are kept amongst many other fish species in the main tank. FYI: The video was shot using a Canon 5DMKII with a 28-135mm lens.
I couldn’t wait for Saturday to post this video!
Joseph is a Sous Chef from Massapequa Park, NY with 8 years of experience. I can’t decide if this guy is the best reality T.V. contestant ever, or just a idiot tough guy. Watch as 27 year old Joseph gets in a verbal battle with foul-mouthed chef, Gordon Ramsey.
I love all of it. The constant self-declaration that Joseph “ain’t no bitch” (double-negative :P), the repeated “Shut yo’ fuckin’ mouth” to the other contestants who are trying to save Joseph from making a scene, and when he actually, ON CAMERA, challenges Ramsey to take the argument outside. Hilarious.
I don’t watch Top Chef, but I’ll definitely be waiting for the conclusion to appear on YouTube.
Update! Catch the second part to the Hell’s Kitchen stand off here
