Tonight is a night FULL of dance folks! Not only will I be recapping the episode for you in a few minutes, but I also scored advanced screening tickets to see the latest film in the Step Up franchise, Step Up Revolution. WOW. What a drastic improvement over the third installment. What the film is once again needless show in 3D, the dancing is phenomenal and the cameos from some of the best SYTYCD alumni were brilliant. The movie stars one of the most memorable contestants from So You Think You Can Dance, Kathryn, and supported by Twitch and the infamous Mia Michaels even makes an appearance. Christopher Scott also had a brief stint iat the end of the film and my dancer crush was instantly reconfirmed. That man is solid gold hotness. The film officially hits theatres this Friday and you HAVE to check it out. If you love dance as an art form, you’ll love this movie. It’s cheesy to the max, but deep down, that’s really the best part.
On with the show! I’m back in the driver seat after Adam graciously stepped in to fill my shoes for two weeks while I was on the road for business. Thankfully my job takes me to awesome places live Comicon 2012 down in San Diego, but I’ll leave those details for another article. This week we’re treated to the top sixteen dancers performing once again for America’s votes. Cat Deeley looked gorgeous as introduced the opening routine performed by the complete group of sixteen, danced to The Here and After by Jun Miyake. I absolutely loved the black and white effect with the one red umbrella. The routine was stunning and danced really well for such a large ensemble. After the top sixteen were introduced, Cat made two big announcements.

This past week Ali and I took in our third show at Bard on the Beach, back for its 23rd season in Vanier Park in Vancouver! This time around we were seated in the more intimate Studio Stage on the Bard lot for the opening performance of Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor. I will say right off the top; this is one of my most favourite Bard on the Beach performances that I have ever seen! And believe, I have got to several over the years. I absolutely love when the creative team behind the performance adds a modern day twist to Shakespeare’s work, and with The Merry Wives of Windsor, they did just that!
The storyline was adapted and set in 1968 in Windsor, Ontario, which is just the tip of the ice berg. The cast and crew were specifically chosen for acting and musical talents, as several 1960s songs were infused into the plot to the point of almost classifying the play as a musical! The evolution definitely helped to liven up the play, and the ensemble cast was absolutely brilliant, earning a well deserved standing ovation at the end of the night.
Last night, So You Think You Can Dance revealed the Top 20 Dancers for Season 9. As we do every year, we’ve spit up the finalists into the Top 10 Boys and the Top 10 Girls, so you can get to know them a little more and check out their promo photos. We’ve also included a poll so you can vote on your favorite dancers!
In two weeks, on Wednesday, July 11, the Top 20 finalists will dance for the judges and America on this season’s first two-hour live performance show. The Top 20 will be paired into 10 couples and work with the world-renowned choreographers we’ve come to love. The following week on Wednesday, July 18, on the first performance and results show, the 10 couples will perform again, but in the week’s assigned genre. America’s votes from the previous week will also be revealed and at the end of the show, the six finalists that make up the bottom three guys and bottom three girls will be revealed and may be given a chance to perform solo routines. The judges will then decide which dancers stay and which two will be eliminated. If couples are split apart, the dancers who remain will form new couples.
Can’t wait! In the meantime, get to know the dancers a little more and vote on your favorite boys below!

Holy smokes folks, we’re at the performance shows of the NINTH season of So You Think You Can Dance! I have a sneaking suspicion I am going to love the new format of the show this year, dropping down to one night a week and cramming all the good dancing into a succinct show versus drawing it out over two nights with a wild amount of unnecessary filler!
The show opened with Cat Deeley rocking a sparkly silver and pink dress (love) announcing that as each of the top ‘twenty’ dancers are revealed, they will then hit the stage to perform live IMMEDIATELY! I love this concept, and I hope the pairings are as brilliant as last season, with the styles matched up per dance genre and a sick-good choreographer to round out the awesomeness. Well let’s get started!
Side note: I put twenty in quotations as we know there will likely be another fake with the top twenty actually being twenty-two, just for that stupidly dramatic, over-produced effect Skeletor loves so much. Will one of your remaining favourites make it on to the show tonight, or will this prove to be the end of their journey? Will my TV crush number 2 finally get named as he makes it through, for us to all pine after? Man I hope so! I guess I should mention that this is the 200 episode of SYTYCD and I don’t really think that matters all that much to the target audience.
Sorry for the delayed post folks, I was in Toronto for work this week and just got back from a whirlwind trip that included a visit with fellow castmate, Kevin! We gushed about this season of SYTYCD and needless to say we’re PUMPED for the level of competition this year, and the slew of Contemporary dancers.
I definitely had a few early favourites from the audition rounds this year, and I’m hoping that we’ll truly be seeing one of the best seasons of So You Think You Can Dance to date! Time to tune in and see if your favourite dancers make it through to the live performance episodes.
From the opening intro alone this two-hour episode is going to be produced with the MAXIMUM amount of drama! The judging panel is once again extended for this stage of the competition to include krumper Lil’ C, the legendary Debbie Allen, homo-favsies Adam Shankman, homo-runner up Tyce Diorio, Screamin’ MM and Skeletor (unfortunately). All of the dancers took to the stage once again to perform their solos – this is it folks, CUT THROAT TIME!
This past week Ali and I were fortunate enough to take in our second show of this season’s Bard On The Beach festival. The tents have been set up again in Vanier Park in Vancouver for the 23rd season of Shakespeare performances, and as I mentioned in my article from a few weeks ago covering The Taming of the Shrew, this year’s line ups is one of the best! We definitely felt a change of pace from Taming to Macbeth, moving from one of Shakespeare’s comedies to one of his most famous tragedies.
The show was directed by Miles Potter and starred two of my all-time favourite Bard actors; Bob Frazer as Macbeth and Colleen Wheeler as Lady Macbeth (pictured above in a photo by David Cooper). These two combined as the perfect murderous villains, rife with anguish and grief, and mastering some of the most complex monologues Shakespeare ever penned. It had been a while since I last read Macbeth, dating all the way back to grade 11 in high school, I had to quickly remind myself of the plot with the handy summary in the show’s program. I’m willing to bet that anyone reading this article knows the plot well enough that I’ll skip over the description. If not, head over to the Bard’s website and give it a quick read; www.bardonthebeach.org
SIDE NOTE: The one-page synopses for each of the plays in the Bard on the Beach program are some of the best I’ve ever had the joy of reading. They give you just enough information and often a hook at the end to not spoil the ending. I love it!

Wow folks, we’re in the final city of auditions for season nine of So You Think You Can Dance – Salt Lake City, Utah. We’re bound to find a few ballroom contestants from this state, which will be a first in this season of SYTYCD! It’s not surprising, but so far this season we’ve seen the fast majority of Vegas-bound dancers specializing in Contemporary, with a few Hip Hop and street dancers breaking their way into the mix.
This week we have Adam Shankman joining Skeletor and Screamin’ MM on the judging panel, which will thankfully add a healthy dose of homosexuality to the mix! I’ll admit, I’m a few drinks in at this point as it was the pre-season kick off to the Canadian Football League, and my hometown team, the Saskatchewan Roughriders were in town playing the BC Lions and I’d never miss a chance of seeing my boys play live. Sadly, the Saskie boys lost, which lead to a few more pints and my boyish grin as I make my way through this episode.
