Over the past few months I have developed an obsession with anything Zombie related, and thankfully there has been a rash of zombie-related or zombie-esque art, cinema, literature and pretty much everything else in between to sink my teeth into. Did that pun work? Being so close to Halloween, I thought this was the perfect time to spill on my spooky secret little.
Through some mad zombie research I came across one of the raddest proposed events known to man. On Oct. 24th at 5:30pm PST the world is set to unite for Thrill the World, an annual performance of the legendary dance scene from Michael Jackson’s Thriller music video! I know, right?! SHUT UP! Seriously, Michael’s music has made Mariah Carey’s comeback seem like the snap of a finger. Honestly, this concept blew my mind and set my heart in motion. I HAVE to take part in this!
For Vancouverites looking to get involved, the Yaletown Roundhouse Community Centre is offering lessons this weekend (October 17th) from 1 to 5pm, as well as next weekend (October 24th) during the same time span with the world-wide mega-dancathon taking place 30 minutes later! For information on locations and practice sessions in your area, check out www.thrilltheworld.com or simply Google it! That’s what I did!
If this sparks a zombie-craze in you like it did for me, there are a variety of additional pleasures to add to your repertoire regardless of your fancy.
The obvious go-to is the latest blockbuster comedy to hit theatres, Zombieland. If you’ve been living under a rock and haven’t seen the trailer yet, check out the following link:
I have to admit that I’m a bit behind the times and haven’t seen the flick yet, but it’s definitely on my MUST sees!
My personal recommendation is for everyone to read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. I’ll be honest, I’m not one for the classics when it comes to literature and my reading habits. Most people will contest that I fancy an Oprah’s Book Club selection like any other 45-year-old-woman, but this one caught my eye on the shelf and I couldn’t resist. I have read a LOT of books over the past few years but there has yet to be one that I finished reading and IMMEDIATELY wanted to read it again. This was one of them. It was the perfect addition of new-age concepts with classic writing and character development. I’m even as far intrigued to potentially pick up the original just to do a comparison (although I hesitate as it could be a snooze fest). Seth Grahame-Smith’s intricate additions are the perfect complement to Jane Austen’s masterpiece. I say that, as I feel like any critic would agree with me, and I would hate to appear ignorant towards a classic! HA – even though, sadly, I am.
This is 100% my go-to for all gifts this year, be it birthdays or stockings over the Holidays. Be prepared for an awesome read, and plan for a Sunday afternoon as you won’t be able to put this book down once you start!
Seriously, Zombie’s are hip and they’re coming to your town next!
