Her big brother, Jayden Smith, scored a hit when he starred in a remake of “The Karate Kid“. Now it’s her turn to conquer the silver screen with a remake of her own. Sony Pictures Entertainment announced they’ve greenlit a remake of the 1982 musical, “Little Orphan Annie“, starring Willow Smith.
The movie will be a joint venture between Sony and Overbrook Entertainment & Jay-Z who’ll be producing the film. Both Willow’s parents are partners in Overbrook, whose roster of films include: “The Pursuit of Happyness“; “Hancock“; “Ali” and the aforementioned “The Karate Kid”. This isn’t the first time the rap superstar has been connected to Annie. Back in 1997, Jay-Z scored a hit when sampled “It’s A Hard Knock Life” from the musical for his track “Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem). Someone’s got a bit of a hard on for Annie.
With a highly-anticipated debut album coming, the 10-year-old is certainly trying hardcore to become a multi-hyphenate. Willow’s previous acting credits include “Kit Kittredge: An American Girl” and “I Am Legend” where she co-starred with her dad. Now that the producers have Annie cast, it’ll be interesting to see who they lure to play Daddy Warbucks, Punjab, Miss Hannigan, and her dog, Sandy. I wonder if Lisa Vanderpump’s dog Gingy from “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” is available.
I have to admit, I’m a little excited about this casting. Willow Smith is adorable and would love to see a retelling of this classic musical. It’ll be interesting to see if the remake falls in the same vein as “The Wiz” starring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson. That film took a more urban take on the classic “Wizard of Oz”. Me thinks, Little Orphan Annie is about to break it down. Whip that curly red hair!!!
