In Suicide Squad, Viola Davis sat back and let Will Smith, Margot Robbie and company have all the fun. This time around, the 52-year-old Oscar winner channels her inner action hero and takes matters into her own hands in Widows.
Set in contemporary Chicago, amidst a time of turmoil, four women with nothing in common except a debt left behind by their dead husbands’ criminal activities, take fate into their own hands, and conspire to forge a future on their own terms. Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki and Cynthia Erivo play the titular women.
The heist thriller film is based on the 1983 ITV series of the same name. The new version is directed by Steve McQueen from a screenplay written by McQueen and Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl). Rounding out the star-studded cast are Liam Neeson, Colin Farrell, Robert Duvall, Daniel Kaluuya, Lukas Haas, Carrie Coon, Jon Bernthal and Brian Tyree Henry.
This isn’t the first time Widows has been remade. Back in 2002, Mercedes Ruehl, Brooke Shields, Rosie Perez and N’Bushe Wright played the lead roles.
Widows arrives in theaters on November 16. Check out the trailer below. It looks pretty damn good.
