Like anything, if you’re not using it, wearing it, watching it, it’s because you think it’s stupid. If you’re not on twitter yet, that rule is probably not an exception.

So, what is twitter?

It’s simple. Painfully simple. Twitter is a micro blogging platform – it’s a place to say what you’re doing, how you’re doing, who you’re doing in 140 characters or less. If you frequently update your Facebook status, it’s pretty much along the same lines. If you update your Facebook status more than once a day, you’ll be hooked on Twitter very soon.

So, why is it exploding like a teenage zit before the prom?

From a user standpoint, it can be pretty addictive. In this era of almost instant knowledge, rumors and gossip, the rush to be the first to know can feed this twitter addiction. For example, if you follow Britney Spears she may choose to release her newest video to her fans via twitter (if South Korea doesn’t leak it first). It allows an instant connection in an impatient world.

From a business/company/celebrity/marketing standpoint they get the same out of it, but just at a different angle. Releasing a new single or a movie trailer can create some free and easy buzz. Imagine the power an actor has to connect to his fans when he lands a new role, or a music artist releasing her new tour dates, or our favorite skin care company handing out more coupons then a ‘cool mom’ handing out free condoms.

Remember the day of email newsletters? Yeah, me neither.

From a developer standpoint (I am a web developer), the twitter gods made it so almost anyone can create new and exciting applications to for all to use. Every day there’s new ways to tweet, re-tweet, auto-tweet and new buzz words which being conjured up as I write this.
