Passengers aboard on a red-eye Virgin America flight woke up to an unusual announcement as they got close to new York early this morning. Two men aboard the flight got married when the plane flew briefly over Canada (where marriage is legal of course. The head flight attendant announced:

“While you were sleeping, we had a little wedding in the galley. The captain diverted us over Canadian airspace so he could marry two gentlemen.”

The captain of Virgin America Flight 28, which originated in San Francisco, officiated the wedding. So cool!

A passenger named Ryan McManus, who was returning home to New York, also quoted the flight attendant as saying, “”We’d like to wish them the best and offer them a round of applause,” and everyone followed that with a big round of applause for the newly married couple.

WordPress founder Matt Mullenwag first broke the news when he tweeted that a quick wedding was conducted on his flight while the plane was over Canada.
