Just a day before Hollywood announces Oscar nominations, Vanity Fair has revealed the cover for it’s 16th annual Hollywood issue. With the first decade of the new millennium over, the magazine chose to focus on the future of Hollywood. Famed photographer, Annie Leibovitz captured the new “It Girls” on a sunny December day.
So who are the latest “It Girls” about to take Hollywood over? The lucky ladies are from left to right: Abbie Cornish; Kristen Stewart; Carey Mulligan; Amanda Seyfried; Rebecca Hall; Mia Wasikowska; Emma Stone; Evan Rachel Wood; and Anna Kendrick. Out of curiosity, why didn’t Vanity Fair make it a perfect 10? Are Top 10 lists cliche or was there not enough talent to feature?
Here’s a brief rundown on each actresses? Some of them you might recognize, but not know their names. Get to know the following actresses now, because they’ll be around for a while.
She first appeared on everyone’s radar as the woman behind the Ryan Philippe / Reese Witherspoon breakup. Since her tabloid start, she has quieted her naysayers with her talent and spirited performances. Cornish’s turn in Jane Campion’s “Bright Star” has earned the best reviews of her short film career. She’s even made the short list as “Best Actress” on a few 2009 Critic Awards.
UPCOMING PROJECTS: Guardians of Ga’Hoole (voice), Sucker Punch

Either you love her or hate her. With Stewart’s stratospheric rise to pop culture history due to her leading role in the Twilight movies, she became very polarizing. At 19, Stewart’s the antithesis of many of today’s teenage stars. She’s not your typical polished starlet with an upcoming clothing line, fragrance or generic pop album. Rather, she would rather let her work speak for her. During this year’s Sundance Film Festival, her biopic of Joan Jett in “The Runaways” was one of the most anticipated.
UPCOMING PROJECTS: Welcome to the Rileys, The Runaways, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, K-11, An American Girl

Mulligan’s quiet elegance on screen is so intoxicating, she’s become young actress in demand. She first debuted alongside Kiera Knightly in “Pride and Prejudice”, and had made substantial inroads in Hollywood since. Her career-making turn in “An Education” is a lock for an Oscar nomination, and could be the spoiler that sneaks in and takes away Oscar glory from either Sandra Bullock or Meryl Streep. In a complete 180 degree turn, she’s set to appear in the long-awaited Wall Street sequel as Michael Douglas’ Gordon Gekko’s daughter.
UPCOMING PROJECTS: Never Let Me Go, Brighton Rock, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, The Beautiful Fantastic, Electric Slide

She’ll be forever remembered in my circle group of friends as Karen Smith from “Mean Girls”. Til this day, we quote the ubiquitous “I’m a mouse, DUH”. Since playing the dimwitted, vacuous Karen, she’s built up a pretty strong resume with high-profile celebrities such as Meryl Streep, Justin Timberlake, Megan Fox to name a few. This month, she’ll be heating up the silver screen in the Nicholas Sparks’ love story “Dear, John” with Channing Tatum- lucky biznatch.
UPCOMING PROJECTS: Big Love (tv), Letters of Juliet, A Woman of No Importance

It’s hard to shift attention from Penelope Cruz, Javier Bardem and Scarlett Johansson but that’s what Rebecca Hall did in “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”- she played Vicky. Her performance earned rave reviews and a few award nominations. The daughter of an American operatic singer and British director, it was only natural Rebecca would seek a career in the arts. Coming off two acclaimed films like “Frost/Nixon” and the aforementioned “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”, she’ll next appear in the crime drama “The Town” with Ben Affleck and “Gossip Girl’s” Blake Lively.
UPCOMING PROJECTS: Please Give, A Bag of Hammers, The Town

Admittedly, I know little next to nothing about the young Australian actress besides her upcoming role in Tim Burton’s highly-anticipated “Alice in Wonderland”. But if she can capture both Tim Burton and Gus Van Sant, I should start brushing up Mia trivia. The 20-year-old even chopped off her long blonde hair for Sant’s upcoming untitled project.
UPCOMING PROJECTS: The Kids Are All Right, Alice in Wonderland, Jane Eyre, Untitled Gus Van Sant Project

I loved Emma as Natalie in the hilarious “The House Bunny”, and as Jules in “Superbad”. The comedic actress was so serious about her craft she created a powerpoint presentation about dropping out of high school to pursue a career in acting. Shortly, thereafter, she moved to Hollywood with her mother and the rest is history. With her sexy raspy voice and Jessica Rabbit looks, expect to being a lot of the Arizonian native for many years to come. Believe it or not, she’s not even a natural redhead, but a blonde. I guess she didn’t want to be too matchy-matchy with one of her BFFs- Grammy winning blonde, Taylor Swift.
UPCOMING PROJECTS: Marmaduke, Easy A

Though she’s only 22-years-old, she has a career most actress double her age would die for. After starring in ABC’s “Once and Again”, she shocked her fans in her riveting role as a troubled teen in “Thirteen”. If you haven’t seen that movie, you have to definitely watch it- she’s so A-MAZ-ING. Since then, she’s been juggling independent movies at Sundance like “The Wrestler”, and big-budget studio movies such as “Across The Universe”. If that wasn’t enough, the talented actress has even showed up on TV as “Queen Sophie” in the highly-addicting HBO hit “True Blood”. Get used to her name, this talent is the real deal.
UPCOMING PROJECTS: True Blood (tv), The Conspirator, Flora Plum

I just re-watched her amazing song-and-dance in “Camp” this past weekend and fell in love with her all over again. Though I haven’t seen her heavily touted performance in “Up in the Air”, I hear she practically steals the movie from George Clooney. Like Mulligan, her Oscar nomination is all but assured and could act as spoiler to Mo’nique’s road to Oscar glory. A few months ago, Homorazzi.com writer Rich wrote a post praising Kendrick’s awesomeness.
UPCOMING PROJECTS: The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, Scott Pilgrim vs the World, I’m With Cancer

Here’s a behind the scenes look from the Vanity Fair photo shoot.

You CAN’T miss out referencing Emma Stone’s newest flick: “Zombieland” but combining her with the unquestionable Abigail Breslin, no matter how mocku-horror the film is, they’re hilarious in it and their acting abilities always shine through.
Oh, and Emma’s gorgeballs as well… and that ALWAYS counts for something ;)

Yeah, Vanity Fair seems to have a very narrow vision of what an It girl should be….
Gabourey Sidibe is Oscar-nominated! I guess you could argue that she’s only done 1 movie and she doesn’t have any big, new role lined up yet… But how about Zoe Saldana? She was in two of the biggest movies last year and is pretty much a fixture on red carpets and award shows! Did they really need to feature Evan Rachel Wood again?
