American Idol 9: Usher Mentors The Contestants

Yeah, Yeah Yeah, Yeah Yeah, Yeaah. Though it hasn’t been officially confirmed by the American Idol camp, it looks quite likely, “Yeah” R&B singer, Usher, will be mentoring the kids during Top 10 week. On his official website, Usher announced that he’ll be on the show Tuesday 3/30 and sing live on Wednesday 3/31. It’s a perfect opportunity for Usher to do a little self promotion since his new album, Raymond vs Raymond drops on March 30.

Thankfully the show enlisted a mentor for the kids that’s under 35. More often than not, they’re dinosaurs. I love Barry Manilow and Tony Bennett, but it’s nice to get some young blood in there every once in a while. With last week’s lame filler music performances (I’m talking to you Ke$ha), I’m actually looking forward to hearing Usher perform on results night. Hopefully he’ll sing a medley of his hits instead of pimping one of his new songs from his new album.

Generally, Idol likes to match mentors with an appropriate theme. Since Usher is there, will the show have its first ever “R&B Week”. They’ve used and abused “Motown Week” for a few years, it’d be nice if they dedicated one to R&B music past that era. On the complete music spectrum, the producers could go with a “Broadway Theme Week”. Usher appeared as Billy Flynn in the revival for “Chicago”. Brian and I were actually in New York during his stint but couldn’t get tickets to watch the sold-out show.

I LOVE ME some Usher and I can’t wait to see him on the show. Kudos to the American Idol producers for snatching him up. Make sure you set up your recording devices to tape Idol. Usher usually puts on an amazing show.
