Music-themed films are where it’s at these days. Not only do they rake it in at the box office, but their accompanying soundtracks also deliver killer revenues. Just look at the recent successes of The Greatest Showman, Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star Is Born to name a few.
You can now add Prince to the list of musical acts getting a movie treatment. Unlike Bohemian Rhapsody which is a Queen biopic, this project involving the catalog of the Purple One will be fictional.
Universal Pictures has acquired rights to several of Prince’s classic songs and developing an original musical. Sorta like how ABBA’s music served as the soundtrack backdrop driving the plot of Mamma Mia.
Prince died on April 21, 2016 of an accidental overdose of fentanyl at his Paisley Park recording studio complex. He was 57-years-old at the time. In his 40-plus career, he sold over 100 million records worldwide. He won won eight Grammy Awards, six American Music Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and an Academy Award for Purple Rain. Some of his iconic hits include “I Wanna Be Your Lover”, “When Doves Cry“, “Let’s Go Crazy,” “Kiss,” “Raspberry Beret,” “Little Red Corvette,” “1999” and “Purple Rain.”
