Universal Officially Confirms Johnny Depp & Javier Bardem For Their ‘Dark Universe’ Franchise

The Mummy reboot starring Tom Cruise, Russell Crowe and Sofia Boutella arrives in theaters on June 9. It’s the first film of Universal Pictures‘ new Monsters franchise titled Dark Universe, based on The Wolfman, The Invisible Man, The Bride of Frankenstein, and Van Helsing. The studio just confirmed the addition of two huge names to its ambitious project.

Johnny Depp and Javier Bardem sign on as the Invisible Man and Frankenstein’s Monster respectively. The latter will make his debut in the next installment of the Dark Universe franchise, Bride of Frankenstein, set for release on February 14, 2019. The film will be directed by Beauty And The Beast’s Bill Condon. No word on which actress will step in to play the titular bride has been announced yet.

So how are all these monsters intertwined? The Dark Universe films are connected by a mysterious multi-national organization known as Prodigium. Led by the enigmatic and brilliant Dr. Henry Jekyll (Russell Crowe), Prodigium’s mission is to track, study and—when necessary—destroy evil embodied in the form of monsters in our world. Working outside the aegis of any government, and with practices concealed by millennia of secrecy, Prodigium protects the public from knowledge of the evil that exists just beyond the thin membrane of civilized society… and will go to any length to contain it.
