Tyra Banks Named New ‘America’s Got Talent’ Host

Tyra Banks has been announced as the new host of America’ Got Talent. The 43-year-old personality will replace Nick Cannon for Season 12 of the long-running talent show. Cannon, who hosted for eight seasons, quit the show after NBC reportedly contemplated firing him over a racy standup routine. Regis Philbin and Jerry Springer previously hosted the show for Season 1 and Season 2&3 respectively.

“Since I was a little girl, I’ve been obsessed with grandiose acts and performers who make the seemingly impossible possible,” Banks said. “I love how AGT brings that feeling into everyone’s home, capturing the best of people who come out and give it their all to make those big, fierce and outrageous dreams come true.”

This casting announcement is surprising on multiple fronts. Firstly, there were reports just last week that 27-year-old actor Brandon Mychal Smith was the frontrunner to take over for Cannon. Secondly, with Banks leaving both America’s Next Top Model and her daytime chatfest, FABLife, I figured her hosting days were long gone. Guess I was wrong.

“Tyra is the complete package: Out-of-this-world talented, funny, brilliant and all heart. In whatever she has done, she has always connected with audiences around the world. Her vivacious spirit will infuse AGT in a big way.” – NBC’s head of alternative Paul Telegdy

Banks will make her AGT debut this summer with judges Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Mel B. and Howie Mandel all returning. What do you think of the addition of Tyra to the show? Good idea or a misstep? Weigh in below.
