Troye Sivan Wonders If He’d Be More Successful If He Wasn’t ‘In Your Face’ Gay

Is Troye Sivan too gay? The 23-year-old South African-born Aussie contemplates if this has prevented him from achieving more success.

During a chat with Will Young and Chris Sweeney on their Homo Sapiens podcast, the “Bloom” singer discusses LGBTQ artists achieving mainstream success. Despite already having a huge following around the world, Sivan wonders if his sexual orientation has prevented him from winning over even more fans.

“I have a great management team and great label, and I haven’t had this conversation with anyone else in fear because I hate it, hate it, hate it when pop stars sound bitter, or blame any sort of lack of success on anything other than for themselves,” he stated.

“I don’t want to come across like I’m saying that at all, but this just feels like a safe space where we can have an open conversation,” Sivan added. “Part of me wonders sometimes if I would be more commercially successful if I wasn’t gay or not as “’in your face gay’.”

He goes on to say “I think we’re in a really interesting time in music right now where we are seeing more and more queer artists pop up, but we don’t have a queer Taylor Swift, we don’t have a queer Rihanna, or a queer Beyoncé.”

“Sometimes it can be frustrating because I’m giving my all and not having some humongous radio smash all over the world. 100% could just be on the music, maybe the music just isn’t good enough, maybe the world is obsessed with hip hop right now and I’m making the furthest thing from hip hop.”

“It could be a myriad other things, but a part of me wonders sometimes, is the world actually ready right now for what I’m trying to be?”

He does make some interesting points. Does you agree with any of his thoughts? Check out the rest of the chat below and weigh in afterward.

Sam smith seems to do just fine 😉

Every person he listed was in the game, killing it, for years before the world stopped sleeping on them, so first, don’t compare yourself to Queen Bey or Riri because it does not compute. The math is not on your side. You might be able to reach Tay Swift, but even she had get a couple albums in. I would suggest collaborating with other queer artist like Years and Years or Mnek. Don’t pull a Miley, ain’t nobody asking you for hip hop, just keep making your sound and try blending in different producers. H.E.R. is always a good option, Grammy nominated too.

Isn’t Taylor Swift the queer Taylor Swift?
Oh, I get it. He wants a bazillion followers and a bazillion dollars, despite a complete lack of talent, just like Taylor Swift (the mumbler), Rhianna (the cavegirl with 1 decent song and 100 godawful songs) and Beyoncé (the only unattractive, untalented member of Destiny’s Child.)

I completely agree with him. Adam Lambert was very “in your face gay” when he came out, and the only huge hit he had was “Whataya Want From Me” and he toned it down in the video and song. It’s the main reason Troye isn’t huge. The music is very good.

    Beyonce is overrated.

He’s not “in your face gay”. He clicks with the straight soccer moms.
