As we head into darker, colder weather now that fall is knocking at the door, we’ll likely find ourselves indoors more than usual. Some will suffer from S.A.D., others may not be as motivated as usual with the sudden lack of sunshine.
With that, I thought I’d spend some time highlighting my Top 5 favorite comfort foods. Perhaps it’s something to munch on while watching Britney Spears on The X Factor. Maybe it’s your favorite combo from a fast food restaurant that you grab on the go, while dressed in unsuspecting clothes so no one recognizes you, of course. Whatever your “fix” is for your comfort food, I invite you to share below in the comments.

5. Potato Chips
I can sit down with a bag of Lays Natural Cheetos White Cheddar Puffs, turn on Oprah and be as happy as a clam for as long as the bag lasts. SO. GOOD. Now I’m not saying these are necessarily healthy, but I don’t feel as bad eating gorging myself on these because they’re only 150 calories for one serving… one serving of 32 (THIRTY TWO) puffs. I also love the Kettle brand Salt and Vinegar Chips, it’s a wonder my BP and cholesterol are normal, for now.
4. Taco Time
Need I say anything more? Ok, I will. Taco Time has been there for me through breakups, makeups, hangovers – let me be honest, I don’t need an excuse to eat Taco Time. I don’t know anything that’s on the menu except for the #1, which is the soft (insert preferred meat – chicken) burrito, medium drink (pink lemonade) and mexi-fries (with a side of ranch), all for $8.69. Sadly though, the Taco Time near me just closed. Maybe it’s a divine sign that I should lay off, or just get off the Hill and find another one. I’ll take the latter.
3. Baskin Robbins
Much like Taco Time, I don’t stray from my regularly ordered fare at BR. Since I can remember, I have always ordered two scoops: some sort of combination of Very Bery Strawberry, rainbow sherbet or daiquiri ice. Occasionally, I’ll treat myself to whip cream and gummi bears.
I love them, and not just because I am one. Pretty much Oreos have an effect on me unlike any other food. Oreos have three “sleeves” or trays inside the package. I can eat a whole sleeve and not notice it until my fingers can’t find the next cookie. I will eat Oreos when I’m not hungry because they taste so good. I’ve forced myself to stay away from the cookie aisle of the g-store for several months now because I know if I walk down the aisle I’ll buy them without hesitation. And if there’s a sale, all bets are off. 2 for 1 make that 4 for 2. YES PLEASE!
1. Homemade Mac and Cheese
There is something so calming and so comforting about sitting down with a bowl of homemade oven-baked macaroni and cheese. My mom learned to make mac and cheese from my dad – Southern style with three kinds of noodles, four kinds of cheese, two sticks of butter, whole milk and bread crumbs on the top. As soon as I moved out on my own, I asked my mom for the recipe and now it sits in the filing cabinet in my head for those cold fall/winter nights. Yum, Yum, YUM!
