Before you read on, I want to make it clear that this is a list from Rolling Stones, having polled their readers on the songs they thought were the worst from the ’80s. The reason I want to make that clear is because I love some of the songs that made the top 10 list and they would certainly not make my shortlist of the worst songs from the decade of glam rock.

The song that was voted worst song was “We Built This City” by Starship. This isn’t the first time it has been (the opposite of) honored with this title. In 2004, Blender named this song the “Most Awesomely Bad Song of All Time”. I have to disagree with this decision for sure. This song embodies what the eighties music was like and certainly one I remember listening to when borrowing my brother’s cassette tapes. I still know all the words (and am listening to it right now for old time’s sake).

Check out the rest of the Top 10 list below and share your thoughts on what made it into the list. What would you name as the worst song of the ’80s?

  • 10. Rick Astley – Never Gonna Give You Up
  • 9. Taco – Puttin’ On the Ritz
  • 8. Toni Basil – Mickey
  • 7. Bobby McFerrin – Don’t Worry Be Happy
  • 6. Falco – Rock Me Amadeus
  • 5. Men Without Hats – The Safety Dance
  • 4. Wham! — Wake Me Up (Before You Go Go)
  • 3. Chris de Burgh – The Lady in Red
  • 2. Europe – The Final Countdown
  • 1. Starship – We Built This City

Okay, I don’t think that “Mickey,” The Safety Dance,” Wake Me Up (Before You Go Go)” and “Never Gonna Give You Up,” should be on this list either. Seriously, how much fun is it singing to Rick Astley’s one-hit-wonder ? It can’t be in the Top 10 list! The video on the other hand… LOL.
